Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 23, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Publisher Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) and Komixx Entertainment have partnered to create Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment (RHCSE), which will produce animated and live-action kid/family centric content for both movies and TV.  RHCSE will develop and produce movies and series based on content from RHCB’s catalog of books and characters.  RHSCE is jointly owned by Random House and Komixx.  Catherine Robins, MD of 2 Sides TV and a minority shareholder and who helped create the new endeavor, will join RHCSE’s management team. Fiona Macmillan, RHCB’s Color Publisher, will head the day-to-day operations of RHSCE.


Award winning visual-effects expert Charles Gibson (Babe, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) makes his feature film directing debut with the family comedy The Goblin, according to Variety.  Featuring a script by Geoff Rodkey (Daddy Day Care, RV), the movie follow a family that moves into a home already inhabited by a curmudgeon of a goblin who wants them out.


BBC One will premiere the new mixed model and CGI animated TV special The Gruffalo (1×30) this holiday 2009. Produced by Magic Light Pictures and animated at Studio Soi, The Gruffalo is based on the kid’s picture book of the same name by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.  The film’s voice cast features Robbie Coltrane, Helena Bonham Carter, Rob Brydon, James Corden, John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson.  Published by Macmillan Children’s Books, The Gruffalo celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

Disney Channel launches a new tween-aimed webisode series MacKenzie Falls ( www.mackenziefalls.com ), beginning this week.  The webisodes are based on the network’s series Sonny With A Chance and follow the tween trials of its character Chad Dylan Cooper (played by Sterling Knight).  A new webisode will bow each Monday over the summer, and an expanded MacKenzie Falls will be featured as bonus content on the Sonny With A Chance: Sonny’s Big Break DVD releasing August 25.  The webisodes will also be available on Sprint TV, AT&T CV, and Disney Channel on Demand and on iTunes.  The interactive MacKenzieFalls.com site invites users to create video trailers and view others user-generated videos.

In other news, Disney Channel orders up a second season if its Playhouse Disney mixed animated preschool series, Special Agent Oso.  A production of Disney Television Animation, Special Agent Oso stars Sean Astin as the voice of the bumbling panda Oso. 

Australian preschool series Rock It! ( www.rockittv.com ), produced by Galaxy Pop, is headed to Asia.  Distributed by Typhoon Distribution, Rock It! will debut first in Asia on the year-old kid channel OKTO (Singapore) in October 2009, with other countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Hong Kong to follow.  The series was commissioned by Network Ten (Australia), where the series first premiered in 2007.  Galaxy Pop is also now inking license and merchandise deals in Singapore with products slated to roll out in mid 2010 to tie in with a planned live concert tour.

MTV Networks International inks deals for Nickelodeon programming across Latin America.  iCarly has been picked up across Latin America including Canal 13 (Chile), Teletica (Costa Rica), Teleamazonas (Ecuador), Televisa (Mexico), Medcom (Panama) and Venevision (Venezuela). Additionally, deals for Back at the Barnyard have been completed with Latin American broadcasters including, Artear (Argentina), Globo TV (Brazil), Megavision (Chile), RCN (Columbia), Teletica (Costa Rica), Antena Latina 7 (Dominican Republic), Teleamazonas (Ecuador), Televisa (Mexico), Medcom (Panama) and America TV (Peru).

The JimJam preschool channel inks a deal with Air New Zealand to offer an edited version of the channel in flight.  The initial one-year deal sees JimJam providing 120 minutes of new programming every three months on Air New Zealand’s international services.  Kids on these flights will have the option of non-stop viewing or tailoring their own schedule on a program-by-program basis.  Additionally, JimJam also has a new VOD service on cable and digital TV provider in the Netherlands, Ziggo.  Under the deal up to 4 hours of JimJam series will be available and refreshed on a monthly basis for subscribers of the Delight package.  JimJam is a joint venture between Hit Entertainment and Chellomedia.

SupperTime Entertainment teams with Animax Entertainment on its new kid’s property, Planet Color by Todd Parr.  Currently slated to go live in late 2009 or early 2010, the online Planet Color experience will feature games designed by Animax.  Planet Color licensees include Chronicle Books (coloring and activity books, and other paper-based products like flash cards and stationery), Jen’s Ideas (apparel), Four Peas (backpacks, school bags, lunch bags, supply bags and duffel bags), and Sara’s Prints (sleepwear).  All merchandise and promotional opportunities, worldwide, are being managed by SupperTime.


Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) completes new licensing deals across France and the UK.

In France, NVCP signs a deal with publishing house Albin Michel to launch the Dora the Explorer branded pocket storybook.  Aimed at K6-7, the 64-page ‘p’tit tome’ will be available from June at airports, bookshops, department stores, news kiosks, book clubs and supermarkets throughout French-speaking markets including Belgium, France, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Morocco, Switzerland and Tunisia. In the UK, iCarly product lines will launch in time for holiday 2009 including: videogame titles from Activision for the Wii and Nintendo DS; from master toy licensee Vivid Imaginations in conjunction with Playmates Toys (toys, tween electronics, play sets, role play items).  This summer will see the release of iCarly products from Alligator Books (activity books) and International Greetings (stationery) and Pyramid Posters (posters and badges), as well as products from Martin Yaffe (wheeled toys, hair electricals) and Trade Mark Collections (fashion backpacks and bags). Additionally, Nickelodeon UK will be bringing SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora The Explorer to five major shopping centers (each two-day events) across the UK this August as part of an interactive effort aimed at K3-12 and their parents.

LazyTown Entertainment partners with V-me, a US Hispanic TV network, and Tycoon Entertainment and Global Entertainment Group to bring the stage show LazyTown Live! to the US.  The live show will tour the US exclusively in Spanish beginning Q1 2010, with support from the V-me national broadcast network and local affiliates.
