Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, June 20, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
ViewNow and Buena Vista Pay Television will partner to offer Disney studio content to both telco and cable television markets. ViewNow also received licensing rights enabling it to offer customers a chance to order Disney titles on demand with a 72-hour viewing period. Customers can view the film as many times as they wish within 72 hours with full VOD functionality. This new content package consists of titles from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films and Pixar Animation Studios, including movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest and animation from the current movie Cars.
Lifetime will debut its new drama series Angela’s Eyes on July 16 at 10p. The story is about a tough young FBI agent who knows how to ferret out liars making her invaluable in solving crimes. The series is a production of The Cleary Company and Bull’s Eyes Entertainment in association with NBC Universal Television Studio.
As they get ready for their rebranding in September, OLN will add several new programs to their line-up this fall. OLN will continue to focus on outdoor adventures and will add more competition programming, hence their new moniker Versus. The new programs include:
- The Barbecue Championship Series (working title), on the order of Iron Chef for brisket
- The Huntley Way (working title), the hunting and fishing adventures of actor Huntley Ritter and outdoorsman Ronnie Hall
- Off the Hook, a reality series surrounding New York fishing buddies
- Shark Hunters: East vs. West, witnessing a shark fishing tournament
- Soul of a Champion, sports editors at USA Today will define traits that make a true champion and will develop a test to measure those aspects
The Tribune Company will sell WCWN/Albany to Freedom Communications, Inc. for $17 million. The transaction will close per regulatory approval. As the owner of WRGB, this acquisition will give Freedom Comm a duopoly in the market.
The Montel Williams Show is breaking the syndication mold and offering its daily talk on weekly podcasts. Distributed by CBS Paramount Domestic Television, Montel’s podcast will include follow-up interviews with show guests a well as original content from the show’s host – all free on the website at www.montelshow.com starting Monday. New podcast eps will be available every Monday.
CNN.com will launch six video podcasts starting today, four of which will include original content:
- The Grist which carries this tagline: “This isn’t news, people, and it certainly isn’t important.”
- Show and Tell is a technology based show
- All Access Backstage Pass is what the network calls a “gritty” look at correspondents in the field
- Ask Glenn with Glenn Beck answering viewer questions
Two more daily video feeds will include repurposed CNN.com content –
- Now in the News – Commuter Edition comes out later in the day for the ride home
- In Case You Missed It is a showcase of that day’s most interesting video shots

Upfront 2006 Update:
As this year’s slow-paced broadcast television upfront season winds down, it is expected the advertising revenue will be flat or down from last year’s $9 billion figure, as more dollars were shifted to other media such as cable, internet and other digital opportunities. At the end of last week, media buyers predicted that an estimated $5 billion had been committed to broadcast primetime business, but this final number will depend on how the networks calculate their total sales.
- Industry insiders think NBC will write about the same amount as last year ($1.9 billion) which will most likely include the Sunday Night Football inventory. (When ABC had the NFL franchise, it separated its primetime and sports revenue.) It is projected that NBC had to cut its pricing due to lagging ratings, but they apparently sold more inventory to keep the number flat year to year. NBC’s estimated CPMs this year are down 5% versus last year.
- ABC is expected to make out best in the whole process and by end of last week had sold 30% of their inventory at a predicted +3-4% increase, making it the network with the biggest rate hike. With nine new programs added to the fall schedule and moves of key programs to different time periods and nights, ABC is expected to win Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday nights in the A18-49 demo next season.
- CBS is predicted to win Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights with A18-49, and insiders are puzzled as to why the network isn’t writing bigger increases than the rumored flat to negative -2% on their business. Other insiders say CBS will end with business at flat to +2%.
- By the middle of last week, it was reported that FOX had written business at a +2-3% increase.
- The CW, like its parent CBS, had written business at flat to +2%.
As the broadcast networks wrap things up, the top-tier cable networks are ready to roll and will likely finish their business by the July 4 holiday. The second and third-tier nets will finish by the end of summer. Since the broadcast networks are coming in with flat or low percentage CPM increases, and since they are an indication of how cable will fare, it is predicted the cable channels will end up at a +2% increase. Syndication will move after cable is finished.
Comedy Central‘s online broadband channel Mother Load has several projects in the development hopper, and has already ordered up one to series, says Hollywood Reporter. Michael Weithorn’s animated Baxter & McGuire received an 8 episode order and is schedule to premiere in September. You’ll be glad to know this show is about a pair of talking testicles. Among the project currently in development are Honest where everyone says exactly what they think; and Good God set in heaven where heaven is run like a Fortune 500 company.
Casting Call: Are you a gadget and gizmo girl? BET is looking for a new female co-host around 18-25 years old for its new high-tech, media and gaming series Hotwyred. The network is holding auditions on June 22 (11a-6p) at CBS Studios (530 W. 57th St.) in New York City
