Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 16 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Looking for a job? It might be good to know, that according to a Jump Start Social Media poll, “three-quarters of hiring managers check LinkedIn to research the credentials of job candidates.” The poll also indicates that almost half of those surveyed check Facebook accounts. Though one would assume that since Facebook is considered more social of the two, hiring managers use the Facebook accounts more as a weeding out tool. So those photos of you doing a keg stand at your neighbor’s Memorial Day picnic should be deleted.

It is increasingly important to become accustom to these services and to understand that they are highly accessible to viewers, so make sure that you are projecting the image you want potential bosses to see. Or in 2009 talk, that you are putting forth the brand you wish to be associated with your name.

The best way to become quickly known and respected within the LinkedIn community, is found within their Answers section. If you can market yourself as a expert in a particular field, answering questions with good, sound advice, many people will ask to be connected to you, increasing your networking ability. This, of course, will pay dividends when you need assistance in looking for a job and you will be helping people by sharing your knowledge.

LinkedIn is a tool that can be used to your benefit. If you are not using it, you can be sure that others are, putting you at a disadvantage.

How about some good economic news?

The Labor Department reported that the amount of people applying for jobless benefits dropped by 24,000, a number considered more optimistic than expected. Adding to this, the Commerce Department reported that retail sales rose by .5% in May. While that may not sound significant, it does mark the end of a two month decline and represents the largest gain since January.

Furthermore, USA Today reports that there is, “increasing evidence that the recession is likely to end in September, with a mild recovery starting in October.” The paper bases their observation on the USA TODAY/IHS Global Insight Economic Outlook Index, an impressive collection of economic data, including eleven “forward-looking economic and financial indicators that predicts future GDP growth, adjusted for inflation. ” The USA TODAY/IHS Global Insight Economic Outlook Index can be viewed at www.usatoday.com .

For the financially savvy job hunter, relocation has gone from the worst case to best case scenario. Moving to another area for a new job is perhaps the best way to find a job quickly. It now provides perhaps the only way for someone who has been terminated to maintain or even improve their lifestyle.

Relocation has long been seen as a hardship for families. Families are spread thin, children are uprooted from school, community ties are torn, and reputations must be remade. But none of those are necessarily true. Family proximity is just as apt to create conflict as closeness. Sometimes a little distance can be the best thing. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Children are far more resilient than we realize, and relocation can lead to increased self confidence. Army brats are disproportionately represented among high achievers. And in the information age, reputations are entirely portable. You can bring yours with you to another city or even another continent.

At a time when cities are flooded with similarly skilled and experienced job hunters, a change in location can be a godsend. Rather than being one of a thousand, you can be one of a kind. And your “foreignness” can add a hint of the exotic that helps you stand out from every other candidate.

Moving to an area with a lower cost of living results in an automatic pay raise. Add to that the lifestyle advantages that could come from living in a more pleasant climate, more vibrant culture, more enlightened community, or more beautiful environment. This is one case when less really could mean more.

There’s also an inherent benefit that comes from change, particularly if it comes at a time of life when you might otherwise be sedentary. New experiences, new places, and new people can keep your mind and spirit young, open minded, and optimistic.

Questions from our Readers

I am a Television Executive with a production company. I’ve have been with the company for 10 years and I’m ready for a change of scenery. I have many contacts at networks but I don’t feel it’s appropriate to let them know I’m looking since we pitch shows and work on projects together. I was thinking of using a head hunter but I’m not sure how to find the best one for my field. Any advice would be appreciated.

I’m sure you’re capable of doing your current job while looking for another. Your contacts are likely just as professional in their ability to separate the present from the future, so don’t self sabotage networking efforts. That said, if there’s a specific situation in which you feel being candid might not be appropriate, make a more subtle approach and ask for an update on “what’s going on” in the industry. They’ll get the message. In fact, these are the people from whom you can get headhunter suggestions. Say that you’ve been contacted by a number of headhunters and are curious about their experience working with such firms.

I am currently a floor supervisor for a company. I’m interested in increasing my salary, but don’t know how to bring it up with my boss. The only “promotion” I can receive is that of president or vice president, since those are the only positions above mine. Do you have any advice as to how I can promote myself or ways to approach my employers?

It sounds like you’ve reached the end of the line with this company. You could push for a seniority increase, but that’s apt to put a target on your back. You could try expanding your responsibilities, perhaps even creating new ones. A savvy executive will read between the lines and understand what you’re trying to do. In any case, don’t waste time waiting for an “inheritance.” By all means renew your job vows, but also launch a job search.
