Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Jetix Europe inks a deal with its majority shareholder, Disney, for distribution throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).  As of July 1, 2008, Disney-ABC International Television (DAIT) will handle distribution of Jetix channels and digital content in these regions across all platforms, including cable and satellite and digital services such as IPTV and PPV.  DAIT already serves as the distributor for Jetix content to free-to-air broadcasters worldwide, as well as a portfolio of Disney kid channels including Disney Channel, Disney Cinemagic, Playhouse Disney, Toon Disney, as well as ESPN Classic and NASN.

Here comes Papa Smurf.  Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are looking to bring a mixed live-action/CG animated adaptation of The Smurfs to the big screen, per Variety.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Japan’s Adness Entertainment licenses the US broadcast rights for Kamen Rider Dragon Knight to 4Kids Entertainment, which plans to air the series as part of TheCW4Kids Saturday morning block on The CW Networks for the 2008-9 season.  Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, a live-action series featuring CGI special effects, follows he adventures of a teen discovers a mysterious deck of cards that give him the power to transform into an ancient warrior called a Kamen Rider.  Produced by Adness Entertainment, which is adapting for the US, the series is based on the original series Kamen Rider Kyuki, produced by the Toei Company.

Franny’s Feet take her to PBS Kids Sprout, where the preschool animated series from Decode Entertainment will premiere on Friday, July 4 at 12n in a 90-minute block as part of Sprout’s Summer Fun Fridays.  From the following morning, Franny’s Feet steps into its regular timeslot at 9:30a, Saturdays/Sundays, during The Let’s Go Show weekend morning block.  The series will also play daily at 3p in the Sprout Sharing Show.

Taffy Entertainment sings a broadcast deal for the new CGI animated series Twisted Whiskers with Canal+ (France).  Twisted Whiskers, currently in production, is slated to bow in early 2009.  Produced Mike Young Productions and DQ Entertainment the series is based on American Greetings squash and squished dog and cat characters.

News from Banff World Television Festival includes that Shaftesbury Films establishes a new Digital Media division with the acquisition of multiplatform digital content producer Smokebomb Entertainment.  Heading up Shaftesbury’s new digital media division are Smokebomb Executive Producers Daniel Dales and Jarrett Sherman.  The division will produce original content for the web, mobile and all digital media platforms.

Magma dd inks deal with the newly merged Granada Ventures and Granada International to serve as its new broadcast, distribution and licensing partner in Eastern Europe.  Under the new pact Magma has acquired the TV rights for the first season of the animated preschool series Pocoyo for broadcast in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia, from September 1, 2008.  Additionally, a licensing and merchandising deal running alongside the new broadcast contract covers Bosnia, Serbia, Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro.  Magma will introduce a range of Pocoyo products in multiple categories including infant apparel, accessories, jigsaw puzzles, balls, inflatables, bedding, and stationery among others, beginning fall and winter 2008.  Additionally, Magma will distribute the Bandai range of Pocoyo toys throughout the region, to coincide with series launch on TV.

MARKETING/LICENSING

This week marks Mattel’s launch of a new, subscription-based version of its BarbieGirls .com virtual world, Barbie Girls V.I.P. ($5.99/month), which introduces fans to new areas and new games and allows them to purchase fashions, furniture, room decor, get a makeover, adopt a virtual pet among other things.  Fans can still play on the site for free using a basic version of the service.  Additionally, BarbieGirls.com recently introduced a Parents’ Place micro site specifically to provide parents with online safety information.

In other Kamen Rider Dragon Knight news, Adness Entertainment has appointed Bandai America as the master toy licensee worldwide, outside of Asia, for the property.  Targeted to boys 6-11, Bandai America is slated to launch a full global toy line based on live-action Kamen Rider Dragon Knight series in late 2009.

HIT Entertainment and Aardman Animation expand their relationship to include two new exclusive pacts.  Hit will now be responsible for the consumer products roll-out of Aardman’s new animated preschool series Timmy Time in North America.  Additionally, HIT will manage Aardman’s Themed Attractions business around the world for Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time.  Slated to premiere in early 2009, Timmy Time will air on Playhouse Disney in the US and Disney Channels around the world.

Even more news from NCircle Entertainment this week as it inks a five-year distribution deal with Taffy Entertainment.  First up in the North American licensing deal, NCircle will distribute Taffy’s preschool series Dive Olly Dive both at brick and mortar stores as well as through online retailers.

Vivendi Entertainment Canada and Nelvana Enterprises enter into an exclusive home vide license deal for Bakugan.  The first Bakugan title, featuring the first five episodes of the series, will be released on DVD in Canada on August 26, 2o08.  The Bakugan animated series is a co-production between Nelvana Enterprises, Spin Master, Sega Toys, TMS Entertainment, Japan Vistec Inc. and Sega Corporation, with animation by Japan Vistec and TMS Entertainment.

Marvel Entertainment, Inc. grants Leomil NV, an international footwear company, the exclusive rights for Marvel branded shoes in Europe and Russia.  The multi-year licensing agreement encompasses all characters in the Marvel Universe, including fashion, casual and sports shoes.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) is teaming with licensing agency Lisa Marks & Associates, Inc. (LMA) to develop its legendaryPRO brand.  The NBRPA, also known as the Legends of Basketball, includes 1,000+ members, all former basketball players from the NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters.  The legendaryPRO group of brands will feature official Legends of Basketball trademarks including names, likenesses, and autographs of many of the greatest players in basketball history.  Proceeds from the sale of legendaryPRO branded products are pledged to support the Legends foundation and the charities they represent.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Atari, Inc. names Tim Flynn as SVP/Sales.  Flynn will oversee retail sales and digital distribution in North America.  He will repot to CEO and President, Jim Wilson.  Most recently, Flynn served as VP/Sales  The Americas for Capcom USA, Inc.

Tom Roe is named Commercial Manager, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG).  In this role Roe will develop and extend the appeal of CPLG’s Sports properties, which include RFU, The FA, The ECB, WRC and Wembley Stadium among others.  Prior to joining CPLG Roe was Licensing Manager at IMG Licensing.
