Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

And the winner in the July 4th three-day holiday weekend domestic box office race is … Paramount’s (DreamWorks) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) with $42.3 million, edging out Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (PG), which took in $41.7 million, per Nielsen edi.  The preliminary estimates on Sunday had the two movies neck and neck with $42.5 million.  In its first 12 days Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a sequel, earned a total of $293.4 million in 4,234 theaters, while in its first five days in release Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the third Ice Age movie, took in a total of $66.7 million at 4,099 theaters nationwide.

MORE KIDS STUFF

More gruesome events and ghastly characters from British and world history are headed for the CBBC, which has picked up a second season of Horrible Histories (13×30) from Lion Television.  Based on the author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown’s Scholastic UK book series, the Horrible Histories TV episodes are penned by UK comedy writers including Sarah Hadland (That Mitchell and Webb Look), Jim Howick (Peep Show), Simon Farnaby (Jam and Jerusalem, The Mighty Boosh), Ben Ward (Dead Ringers) among others, and voices by Jon Culshaw.

Willow Smith, daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, makes her TV debut in a new, one-hour special episode of Nickelodeon‘s live-action series True Jackson, VP, on Saturday, July 25 at 8p.   In the episode, Willow plays as a young version of True in flashback scenes.  Following the premiere, fans can log on to Nick.com for an exclusive online podcast interview with Willow Smith.  In the week leading up to the special, Nick.com will also feature a new True Jackson, VP Game of the Week as well as Extra Scoops from the episode.

Comedian Peter Kay takes on another character in new episodes of Chapman Entertainment‘s animated series Roary the Racing Car debuting in the UK on Five’s Milkshake strand from Monday, July 13 and Nick Jr from August 3.  In addition to starring as the voice of Big Chris, Kay lends his voice to the character’s mom, Big Christine.  In the first episode, Let’s Hear It For big Chris, Big Chris and Big Christine perform a duet, My Lovely Mum!  The new Roary the Racing Car episodes also feature two other new characters – James, a classic Aston Martin inspired ‘chauffeur’ car and Loada, a huge transporter truck from Eastern Europe.

MTV Networks International inks a range of program sales for Nickelodeon shows across: France Television (France) picks up The Wild Thornberrys for the first time, as DR Ramasjang (Denmark) re-licenses the show.  DR1 (Denmark) takes the first two seasons of preschool series Ni-Hao Kai-Lan and seasons on and two of tween-targeted iCarly.  SIC (Portugal) will air iCarly for the first time this year and Televisa (Mexico) extends its deal by taking the second and third seasons of iCarly.   Televisa also picks up SpongeBob SquarePants and Drake and Josh’s Merry Christmas Special, with TV Cultura (Brazil) acquiring the preschool series, Wonder Pets! and Dora the Explorer.

Big Idea will release its holiday VeggieTales DVD, Saint Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving, this fall 2009.  Featuring Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber and introducing Nicky the Pepper, the DVD title debuts October 3 in the CBA through Word Distribution and October 6 in the general market through Genius Products.  Bonus features include the new original song Give This Christmas Away, written by Matthew West, who performs the song with Amy Grant.  The release will be supported in Q4 with a marketing and promotional campaign targeting both Christian and general markets, including in-store events.  Also in Q4, the music video for Donuts for Benny, which is also from the DVD, will be featured by promotional partners at their outlets including Chuck E. Cheese, Gymboree clothing stores and Crazy 8 stores.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Brand Champions grants Target Entertainment Group the worldwide licensing rights to its girl’s fashion and lifestyle brand Brit Chicks.  Aimed specifically at girls 7+, Brit Chicks centers on a three-member big-eyed girl group that will debut this October on the social networking site www.britchicks.com .  The new site will feature original songs by ‘the group’ that will be available for download on the site as well as via iTunes, with a full CD planned for the future, as well as offering a place for girls to chat with one another online, share information and adventures.  Target’s licensing program will include apparel and accessories as well as plans to extend into publishing and gaming.

Decode Enterprises inks a home video and licensing deal in the UK for Adastra Creative’s live-action series Grandpa In My PocketWarner Home Video UK is named as DVD partner for the first season of the series, and Brandzoo signs on to act as the comedy brand’s licensing agent.  Developed and produced by Adastra Creative, Grandpa In My Pocket airs in the UK on CBeebies, which has commissioned a second season of the series.  The series is produced with participation from Finance Wales.  Decode Enterprises holds TV, DVD and consumer products rights to Grandpa In My Pocket.

National Geographic Kids magazine is teaming with Subway restaurants for a Subway Kids Taste for Adventure campaign, which includes a kids’ meal promotion and a family contest celebrating exploration and the outdoors.  Available beginning this week are Subway Fresh Fit For Kids meals that feature various National Geographic Kids-branded toys. The campaign is supported by an advertising program including a cover wrap on National Geographic Kids magazine, themed cards in the magazine and a microsite at www.kids.nationalgeographic.com .

Six Flags is expanding its partnership with Nintendo to feature the new Wii Sports Resort video game for park attendees to play now through the game’s launch date on July 26. The game features 12 different sports activities (e.g. archery, basketball and table tennis) and comes with the new Wii MotionPlus accessory.  Wii Sports Resort will be showcased daily in the Wii Experience in nine Six Flags parks across the country. In addition, Wii Sports Resort will be featured in an extensive in-park media program including commercials on Six Flags TV and its Jumbotron Network as well as signage and online presence on www.sixflags.com .

The Singing Machine Company announces the launch of several new on-line consumer retail efforts.  The Singing Machine on-line store now offers consumers karaoke hardware, music, and accessories; legally downloadable karaoke music at http://shop.singingmachine.com/ that offers some 9,000 songs ($0.99-$1.49 each); and an interactive karaoke social networking community where individual performances can be uploaded to the web.  Additionally, Singing Machine enters into a new distribution partnership for Disney consumer electronics products, under which Singing Machine will sell Disney branded products in this fiscal year and is currently offering a range of Disney items in its store.
