Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 6, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
So far this summer, with its 12 month season, and now just one month into the official summer season (which effectively kicks off at the end of the May sweep), Fox has averaged a 2.1 A18-49 demo rating according to Nielsen Media Research. It has launched a handful of new shows, with the highest rated summer series thus far for any network being the return of Paris and Nicole in Simple Life 2, which has averaged a 4.7 rating in four outings. Even better among the younger set – A18-34 averaged a 5.5 so far. Immediately following Simple Life 2 on the schedule is Method & Red which on all accounts is doing okay, but hasn’t really been able to use its lead-in to its best advantage – different audiences? Probably. Method & Red has averaged a 3.2 A18-49, with a slightly better 3.9 among A18-34, an average of both its original play and its repeat play(s) which follow Bernie Mac (audience retention works better in the latter time slot). Quintuplets airs on Wednesday nights with That 70’s Show lead-in, and so far in three outings has averaged a 3.1 among A18-49, and a 3.5 among A18-34. Not doing quite as well for Fox thus far this summer is North Shore, averaging less than a 2.0 in all key demos; The Casino from Mark Burnett is paired up with North Shore and has yet to generate any real following. The Jury has averaged a 1.1 A18-49 (production has been halted, and its airings per week have been cut from 2x to 1x, and is on the bubble for the fall or midseason as it hopes for an up tick in the next four weeks),
Premiering Tonight: 8pm – Big Brother 5 on CBS 930p – Amazing Race on CBS
According to Ad Age,NBC’s The Apprentice has not nailed down that key automotive sponsor yet with the turn down by Chrysler to the $50 million renewal price, despite the shows unbridled success and NBC’s ordering twice as many episodes for the fall season (26) than in its first outing. And it’s not that Chrysler is cutting back on its television budget – according to AdAge it says it will spend more this season than last across all media.
Expanded four day Holiday Weekend Box Office Estimates: July 2-5, 2004 Spider-Man 2 (Sony)* $115.8 million – opening weekend Fahrenheit 911 (Fellowship Adv. With it’s $180.05 million six day take at the box office, Spider-Man 2 ranks #1 ahead of the previous record holder, The Matrix Reloaded set last year with a 6-day total of $147m. It is also the biggest 4th of July weekend box office ever, overtaking the 2002 release of Men in Black II, earning $52.1m. Over the extended holiday weekend (July 2-5), which covered the back end of the 6-day total, Spider-Man 2 brought in an estimated $115.8m in ticket sales. Worth noting here is that both this year and in 2002, the 4th of July weekends were a four-day holiday for many in the US. Looking at July 2-4, the usual Friday-Sunday weekend, Spidey’s earned $88.4m. The budget for Spider-Man 2 was $210m, with marketing & advertising coming out of a separate budget. Spider-Man 2 will open Germany on July 8, Japan on July 10, and Spain on July 14 followed by the UK on July 16. Mark your calendars – Spider-Man 3 is slated for a May 2007 release.
Spider-Man 2 wasn’t the only feature film setting records over the last week, Shrek 2 (DreamWorks) weighed in with a total box office take so far of $410.2m, making it #5 highest grossing movie of all time, sliding past the first Spider-Man movie.

Bonnie Somerville will be the newest cast member for ABC’s NYPD Blue kicking off in the fall for its last season. She replaces Charlotte Ross who left the series after three seasons. Somerville will play a come hither detective, adding a little spice to the precinct.
Spike TV has moved The Joe Schmo Show from Tuesdays at 10pm to Mondays at 11pm (repeats continue on Tuesdays) where it can utilize the sizeable WWE Raw lead-in audience – also the networks highest rated series, as a launch pad. According to Variety, the result of the first airing in this time period was a tripling of the audience to 1.2 million viewers.
If you’re a fan of AOL’s music performance series, Sessions@AOL, you may want to note that beginning tonight it will return with new ‘episodes’ every Tuesday all month long. AOL and cable network Fuse have teamed up to provide a variety of musical talent including New Found Glory, Dave Matthews and Twista, among others.

The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1957 – 15-year-old Paul McCartney attends a church picnic in the village of Woolton, near Liverpool, where he meets 16-year-old John Lennon. Lennon’s band, the Quarrymen, was playing at the picnic, and McCartney played a few songs on guitar with the band between sets. A few days later Lennon invited him to join. Later, the pair recruited McCartney’s friend George Harrison, changed the band’s name several times, and after a few false starts settled on a drummer in Ringo Starr and a name: The Beatles.
