Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

MGM has launched THIS TV network, a 24/7 ad supported linear channel designed for the US broadcast marketplace and available to local broadcasters as a turn-key solution for generating revenue in the digital arena. MGM is targeting the local broadcasters newfound digital channels which will become a significant priority when the analog transmissions are turned off in February 2009. MGM is partnering with Chicago based Weigel Broadcasting to bring THIS TV to the free-TV marketplace beginning this fall. Additionally, on the kids front, MGM is partnering with Cookie Jar Entertainment to provide FCC approved kids programming. Overseeing the programming for THIS TV will be Weigel Broadcasting’s EVP Neal Sabin, and the new network will begin broadcasting on the Weigel properties in Chicago, Milwaukee and South Bend beginning immediately. Kim Bryson, SVP/Ad Sales for MGM will handle the ad sales for THIS TV out of the NY MGM office.

Sunday at Scripps Networks. A Prime Time for “Star” Gazing.


AMC debuted the second season opening of Mad Men on Sunday night at 10p and had 2.0 million total viewers tune in, marking a 113% increase over the season one average (915,000). Among the key demos, Mad Men delivered 955,000 A18-49, up 87% over season #1, and 996,000 among A25-54, an increase of 14% over season #1, according to fast nationals provided by Nielsen Media Research.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Skins will make its US premiere on BBC America beginning Sunday, August 17 at 9p with two one hour episodes. The following week, the show will settle into is regular Sunday night 10p time period. Described as a Coming of Age drama, Skins follows a group of teenagers as they push boundaries and try to manage all the authority figures in their lives.

Mark your calendars – Fox‘s debut of Secret Millionaire from RDF USA has been inked in for December 3 at 8pm with a two-hour season premiere. The show is based on the RDF UK format, and has some of the US’s wealthiest go undercover to live without all their high end paraphernalia, and drops them into drastically impoverished neighborhoods where they will live and work, to see how the other half gets by. On the millionaires’ final day, their true identities are revealed and a cash gift is given by them to a lucky recipient.

G4 will add two new British comedy series to its Duty Free TV nightly international programming block this summer —

  • Freaky showcases six talented street musicians – the Kings of the Curious – who perform magic anywhere they can find an unsuspecting audience – on the street, in markets or within their own electronic performance spaces. Freaky will delivery eight 30m episodes.
  • The Peter Serafinowicz Show stars Peter Serafinowicz as anything but Peter Serafinowicz. This comic actor displays a wide variety of offbeat characters and impersonates other well known actors in this six part half hour comedy series.

Debuting on Saturday, August 16th at 10p on Style Network is the new magazine style series The Dish. Hosted by Danielle Fishel (aka Topanga from Boy Meets World), The Dish focuses on the best and the worst of celebrity culture – fashion and beauty, guilty pleasures, must-see moments, secrets of both weight loss and weight gain, and everything else that reads celebrity.

The Television Syndication Company, Inc. will bring off-cable series The New Detectives and The FBI Files to the upcoming syndication season, beginning this fall, set to debut on September 6. Each weekly series will have 26 episodes. Both docudramas were originally produced for Discovery Channel by New Dominion Pictures. Additionally, The New Detectives 30m strip series will be back again for next year, premiering on September 5, 2009.

ESPNU will go HD just in time for College Football Season on August 28. The network has plans to air more than 70 exclusive match ups, beginning with the game between SEC’s Vanderbilt and the MAC’s Miami (Ohio) at 730p.

In a development deal with Film Garden, TV Guide Network will create My Favorite Things, an inside view of celebrities’ lifestyles and favorite pastimes. TV Guide Network has also picked up a 4th season of Look-A-Like from Kaleidoscope Entertainment, set to debut in September 2008 with 26 new original episodes. And lastly, the network has renewed Celebrity Fit Club, the VH1 reality competition series which began airing on TV Guide Network last year.

Mario Lopez signed to host the daily syndicated entertainment magazine series Extra, upping his status from weekend host and correspondent. Lopez takes over on September 15th when the show premieres its 15th season. Dayna Devon, long time co-host of Extra, will switch over to special correspondent with a focus on major celebrity interviews and lifestyle reporting, and serve as backup to Lopez. Current co-host Mark McGrath will be leaving the show to pursue his musical career. Extra is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

Casting Note: Open casting call for Cycle 12 of America’s Next Top Model will be held in NYC on August 16 from 10a-3p at the Park Central New York, 870 Seventh Avenue. They’re looking for women, 18-27, all shapes and backgrounds, tho a height of at least 5’7″. Livecasting service Mogulus raised an additional $10 million in funding from Gannett. The traditional media giant is also a Mogulus Pro customer and has been using the site’s tools to power live streaming events on its newspaper and TV station sites, such as a live Bill Clinton speech from Indiana University on IndyStar.com. The investment was announced as rival Belo Corp. came out with more bad earnings news at its newspaper subsidiary AH Belo. The Dallas Morning News publisher saw revenue drop 15% and sent out a letter to shareholders informing them of a voluntary severance plan to eliminate 500 jobs as the company seeks to “make our own luck in this fast-changing world.” Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

is partnering with Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting Company to launch This TV network, a new US ad-supported 24/7 linear digital channel this October 2008.  In addition MGM is teaming with Cookie Jar Entertainment to handle the kid programming, which includes the FCC required educational informational (EI) programming for This TV.  The new network will make use of MGM’s library of movies (4,100+ titles) and TV programming (10,000 hours).  Weigel’s EVP, Neal Sabin will oversee programming for This TV, with Kim Bryson, MGM’s SVP/Advertiser Sales, handling ad sales for the new network.  Beginning immediately, This TV will be carried on Weigel’s TV stations in Chicago, Milwaukee and South Bend Indiana.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Central European Media Enterprises Ltd. is acquiring from Top Tone Media Holdings Limited an 80% interest in two Bulgarian TV channels.  The shares in the new TV2 national terrestrial channel and the Ring TV sports cable network are valued at approximately $172 million.  The deal is expected to close within 2 weeks.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.


Friday – A18-49 Analysis: Univision led the pack on Friday night with its standard fare delivering a 1.7/6 A18-49 according to final Live + Same Day national numbers from Nielsen. At 8p Al Diablo Con Guapos delivered a 1.9/8, well ahead of #2 network for the hour CBS with a repeat of Ghost Whisperer drawing a 1.3/5. At 9p Univision continued its lead with a 1.6/6, and at 10p Dateline Friday led with a 1.9/7 demo rating.

MSG Entertainment named Liana Farnham VP/Concert Marketing, overseeing the marketing of all concerts, family shows and attractions in New York, and outside markets including Chicago. Additionally, Liana will work closely with other MSG divisions, including Fuse and MSG Media, to create content and cross-platform marketing initiatives that enhance the company’s success in attracting artists to MSG venues.

Meredith McGinn named Senior Manager, Special Projects for WNBC, where she will develop content and programming operations for WNBC’s 24/7 local digital news channel scheduled to launch later this year.

McCann Worldgroup San Francisco appointed Claudine Cheever as EVP/Executive Planning Director, reporting to Nils Peyron, EVP/GM. She begins on August 11th. Claudine will oversee the agency’s account planning department, playing a crucial role bridging the creative department with account planning and media.

Dianne DeSevo and Tonya Dobine, have both been upped to VP/Human Resources Business Partner, Disney-ABC Television Group on the East and West coasts, respectively. Both will report to Jeffrey Rosen, SVP/HR. Dianne’s role encompasses ABC News, ABC Television Network Sales, Broadcast Operations & Engineering, and Hyperion. She will continue to be based at Disney-ABC Television Group offices in New York. Tonya’s role includes ABC Family, Disney-ABC Domestic Television, Disney-ABC International Television, Cable Networks Group Business & Legal Affairs, Disney Media Ad Sales & Marketing, Disney Channel Worldwide, Affiliate Relations, and Media Networks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She will continue to be based at Disney-ABC Television Group offices in Burbank.

John P. Saboor joined WWE as SVP/Special Events, a newly created position with the responsibility for community partnerships, marketing, promotion and sponsorship support for WWE’s special events, including WrestleMania.

Blue Plate Media Services named Lisa Onorati as Media Planner/Buyer. Onorati joins Blue Plate Media Services from SGW Integrated Marketing Communications, where she was Media Director.

Scripps Networks added Sarah Cottay as VP/Development, reporting to Deanna Brown, President/SN Digital. In this newly created position, Sarah will focus on developing growth strategies and delivering strategic roadmaps to implement expansion programs for SN Digital. She will be based in the Scripps Networks New York offices.

Schiefer Public Relations, a division of Schiefer Media, Inc., added Tanya Jacquot to its PR division. Tanya will take on the role of Public Relations Account Manager for Schiefer’s aftermarket clientele.
