Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
07.28.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 28, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Researching companies and personnel can be a daunting experience. Too many times basic internet searches provides too much information, creating confusion rather than enlightenment. Depending on your needs, it might be wise to take a look at the following websites and determine which best conforms to your requirements. All three offer free trials.
Jigsaw.com, free to join, sort of. To get contacts you must upload contacts, the more you give the more you get. Don’t like that idea? You can pay for the information on a monthly or yearly basis. Each time frame offers 3 different plans, depending on your needs and ability to pay. Jigsaw advertises direct dial phone numbers and direct email addresses of over 500 corporations and 700,000 members. Also included is company information covering but not limited to; size, location and industry.
OneSource.com offers a source of global information on companies, executives and industries. The website provides four regional editions, North America, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia Pacific. Each edition can be purchased separately or as a package. The OneSource Business Browser offers the normal corporate history and executive bios, but also provides information on a company’s competition and the strength and weaknesses of companies. Information is crossed index and a library of standard and customizable reports are at your ready.
Hoovers.com offers basic contact information for over 16 million companies, access to 42,000 detailed company records and the ability to receive news alerts from over 2,000 sources. Hoovers affords three different levels of service, Researcher, Prospector and Relationship Manager. While Researcher has access to company profiles and executives only the higher two levels allows direct email information without additional fee.
Update: The newest report from the CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index came out yesterday and the results are largely encouraging. The monthly numbers reflected the biggest gain of the year, a 17.8 index point jump for July following a 3.8 rise in June and a 15.2 increase for May. The index value of executive and management-level job openings advanced to 78.2 (78.2 representing the number of jobs available compared to 100 jobs available in the same month two years ago), a substantial growth over the 41.4 posted in April of this year.
The West, which was lagging behind the rest of the country, climbed almost 20 index points to 75. Only the Midwest scored lower, a 72.4 after an 11.5 point gain. The Southwest and the Northeast still showed the strongest index scores with a 88.1 and a 87.5 respectively.
Jay Martin, JobSerf’s chairman said, “We are encouraged at both the direction and magnitude of July’s gain. It shows the positive recovery, which started in the late spring, is still continuing.”

How to Find the Media Biz Action
By Michael Pollock
How often have you read a report of a media conference or party and you think to yourself, “Rats! I should have been there, if only I’d known about it.” You look at the photos of the attendees they’re people you would like to get to know, who work at firms that could so benefit from your skills and experience. But you didn’t know it was happening – so you were left to read the reports, look at the pictures and update your LinkedIn page hoping that someone would find you.
You don’t have to get left out again. There are several sites that can clue you in to what is happening where you are. Start out at www.mashable.com/category/labels/events for Social Media events across the country. For film biz get-togethers check out The San Diego Media Communications Association at www.sdmca-i.org/media_events.htm .
“Online sites are great at easily keeping in touch and updating a ton of contacts,” says Gary Sharma, the man behind business events calendar GarysGuide. “However meeting and networking in person is absolutely critical, as that is where some of the best relationships get formed, deals get done, partnerships get forged, hires get made, alliances get built.”
Sharma’s list, found at www.garysguide.org , lists “conferences, un-conferences, forums, workshops, seminars, meetups, tweetups, mixers, parties and more.” A quick look reveals a panel in New York entitled Media In Crisis – Is There a Way Out?, a free Internet Marketing meet-up in Minneapolis and an interactive games conference in Cologne, Germany. When I asked him why people typically attend these events, Sharma responded, “The program content is typically always very useful. But it is the brainstorming-style discussions around the content and networking with your peers in the industry that can be particularly invaluable.”
Sharma told me that GarysGuide is used by “an astonishingly wide gamut of people in business: C level execs, Managers, VCs, Investors, Entrepreneurs, Marketing/PR folks, technologists, analysts, bloggers etc. Everyone uses it in different ways. Some are looking for conferences, while others for social events/parties/mixers, while yet others are more interested in workshops and seminars.”
So now there’s no need for you to be left out. Wherever you are in the world you too can have the inside track on what is happening and where and when – and next time it’ll be you in those photos!

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Peter Roche
About a month ago I left my position as Director of Acquisitions for Israel’s number one preschool channel and am currently in Los Angeles looking for work in the children’s media business. In my never-ending searches I come across a lot of positions that look appealing to me, however, I do not necessarily have the background experience for them (for example: Communications Manager at Google). Before the bad economy situation, I would not hesitate to apply for a position that was a bit out of my league since I am so confident in my capabilities. Do you think I should apply for these types of positions, even though they are not in my direct line of work? Also, if a job listing requests not to follow up with HR should I really obey that? How else will I get the interview?
You said, “Before the bad economy situation, I would not hesitate to apply for a position that was a bit out of my league since I am so confident in my capabilities.” I say do the same now. Confidence is enrolling, and more often than not, can make THE difference in a hiring decision.
“Do you think I should apply for these types of positions, even though they are not in my direct line of work?” Yes! If you are confident you could do the job if given the opportunity, then your challenge is to create a way to demonstrate that you’ve got what it takes.
“… if a job listing requests not to follow up with HR should I really obey that?” You can’t just ignore that request, like it didn’t exist. However, as you say, if you are constrained by it you don’t get interviews. So you will have to put your confidence and creativity in overdrive and find a way to get a meeting with the hiring executive. Who is that person? Are they on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter? Can you get an introduction through people who know them, etc.
The “bad economy” is an opportunity for you to strut your stuff. Others may be hesitating, loosing their confidence, and playing by other’s rules (as you may have been tempted to do) – you must not.
While trying to get a fledging branded entertainment company off the ground, I am also looking for freelance and/or other full time opportunities as a Creative Director/Writer/Producer. In my profile on a major job networking site, I list myself as currently employed with my new company. I wondered if the experts could speak to how recruiters generally use these types of sites: i.e., how they search for candidates, and whether or not I should make it clear in my profile heading that I’m looking for work.
The key question you ask is, “… should [you] make it clear in my profile heading that I’m looking for work.” The answer is yes, yes and yes! And with specificity – what kind of work are you looking for and what value will you bring to the person or organization who will hire you? Spending creative time translating what you “do” into a value proposition for a prospective employer is the headline you should lead with.
