Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
07.14.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 14, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Getting married, buying a house, having children and changing careers are the most significant transitions a person can make. Each should be carefully considered before taking action. In this economy, this is especially true with changing careers. Most people change careers because they are unhappy with their current situation. But there are several things a person must consider before changing their career choice.
“I hate my job.” People often confuse hating their job with hating their careers. It is not the same. You must determine if your dislike stems from your boss and/or co-workers, personal, or is it you hate performing the skills necessary for the job, profession. Consider leaving your job but not your career if it’s personal.
“The grass is always greener.” Some people switch careers because they hear of a boom in a particular economic sector. This is usually a bad idea. Being good at a job is hard and if you are good at yours, stay, and let others be good at theirs. In addition, these decisions are often made without the necessary research needed to determine if the new profession is a good fit.
“Rash decisions are the enemy of thoughtful plans.” A career change is a process that takes months to set up properly. You have to research, network, outline employment strategies, create new resumes, cover letters, additional training, perhaps some formal education, refine your job seeking techniques and devise a financial schematic that includes getting hired later than expected. A hasty decision does not allow for any of these.
“I like my job but I need more money.” Who doesn’t need more money? But you must consider the possibility that in moving to a job that pays more, may be the job you truly hate. And for those of you who are in this situation or ever have been, you know that some extra cash is rarely worth the switch.
If you have decided that you are definitely changing careers, before you do so, try to make contact and communicate often with someone within your new chosen profession. Learn the ins and outs, the little things that others rarely think of. Before applying, know how to speak the language of the profession as if you are an old pro. You’ll need the jargon in your interviews, cover letters and resumes.
Good Economic News
Last Wednesday, The Conference Board announced the Measure of CEO confidence increased for the second consecutive quarter.
“CEOs are considerably more optimistic than last time about the short-term outlook; however, their assessment of current conditions, while also improved, suggests the economy remains weak,” says Lynn Franco, Director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. “Among those expecting an increase in profits over the next year, the majority see cost reductions as the primary driver.”
The second quarter reading of 55 (more than 50 indicates more positive outlooks than negative) is a significant increase over the first quarter’s mark of 30.

RESEARCHING THE MEDIA INDUSTRY ONLINE? BUT WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
By Michael Pollock
Even 5 minutes of web research leads to information overload. But you do need to know what is going on, and who is who, and what is coming next.
But before you start, make yourself an agenda. Be clear which industry sector you want to focus on and know what you hope to learn. For instance:
- Which firms in your sector are doing interesting work, so you can dig deeper and see how you might be able to help them?
- Who are the opinion leaders – do you agree with them and how you can reach them?
- Where do your particular projects and skills fit in to the larger picture?
- What is new and exciting in your field and where do the opportunities lie?
- How should you be developing your skills and presenting your experience.
Once you have found some firms and people you think are interesting then you can head off to LinkedIn etc to see who you know who knows them, so that you can get connected. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
www.iab.net has a newsletter and white papers to keep you at the bleeding edge of interactive advertising.
- For an irreverent take on what is new in advertising check out
- For marketing start with the AMA blog:
- For the magazine business look at
- For the TV commercial production business go to
- For Social Media, which seems to include just about everything: www.Mashable.com is a must-read.
- And for the TV business go to
www.sourceecreative.com . They have some free content though you will have to subscribe for the really good stuff. Or you can get a free subscription to SHOOT magazine at www.shootonline.com .
Cynopsis.com (oh, but of course you already knew that!)
These sites and so many others like them are easy to find please let us know what other good sites you find and we can pass them on. But be brutal and move on quickly if a site doesn’t meet your needs, otherwise you’ll find yourself drowning in too much input and will end up with nothing. Get in on the blogversations and make yourself visible, though be sure to stay true to your own personal brand. But that is a whole other discussion.
Michael Pollock is President of Pollock Spark ( www.pollockspark.com ). He is an Executive Coach and Consultant to Creative and Media professionals. Questions from our Readers
Answered by Eli Davidson, M.A.
I have two questions. One is that being let go as a VP I am now willing to accept a position that has lesser pay and a lower title. How do I convey that without looking desperate to a potential employer I don’t know personally.
In the current market, it is commonplace for well-qualified candidates to accept a position that has lesser pay and a lower title. Taking a step down makes economic sense.
The most effective strategy is to do both inner and outer marketing to get a position. Inner marketing–you will need resolve the nagging voices that tell you that you are stepping down. (I consistently see that those who don’t do this very important step are the ones that “just can’t seem to find a job.”) Outer marketing–you will need to sell yourself hard. You’ll be up against more junior candidates, so you’ll need to overcome the hiring manager’s perceptions that you are overqualified.
Reinforce all the ways that you can contribute to the organization. In this situation, your attitude is going to determine a great deal. Make sure that you are enthusiastic, flexible and convey that you are willing to do the job you are given.
The second has to do with industry trade groups. The biggest conference for my area of expertise takes place soon. Is it wise to go? I would be seeing most of my contemporaries and many people I have emailed. Is it tacky or useful?
The three best ways to build your career are: network, network, and network. If it is the biggest conference for your area of expertise it may be the wisest business move you make this year. GO! Keep me posted with what happens as a result.
