Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 11, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.


Decode Entertainment is busy with both a commission for a new animated series and a second season for another.

  • Urban Vermin (26 x 22 min), a YTV original production, is a CGI animated action/comedy series about two raccoon brothers, Abe and Ken (their names alone make me laugh), who have gone from being best pals to the nastiest of enemies.  Developed by Decode’s interactive group, Urban Vermin was initially a prototype game for video game consoles, and further developed by YTV.  Urban Vermin will air as part of YTV’s primetime animated programming lineup.
  • Teletoon (Canada) and CITV (UK) have ordered a second season of Planet Sketch (26 x 11 min) from co-producers Decode and Aardman Animations.  International pre-sales for the second season have been inked with ARD (Germany), LUK (Spain), Jetix (cable satellite rights for Italy, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Netherlands), Scandinavian public broadcasters SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway) and TV2 (Denmark); Nickelodeon France, Australian Broadcasting Corporation and VRT (Belgium).


The summer session of the Television Critic Association TV press tour got underway yesterday in Pasadena with Disney Channel being among the first networks to step up to the podium and lay out its plans for a new series and two existing properties.

  • Handy Manny, a new CG animated series targeted to preschoolers, is set to premiere with back-to-back episodes on Saturday, September 16 at 10 & 10:30a.  Thereafter the series will take its regular time periods as part its Playhouse Disney programming block airing weekdays at 9a, and weekends at 10 & 10:30a.  The series is also slated to bow on Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney Channels around the world in the near future.  The series, which features a bilingual component, revolves around Handy Garcia, a neighborhood handyman who makes his way around town helping people and solving problems with the help of friends and his talking tools.  Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show) provides the voice of Manny.  Created by Roger Bollen and Marilyn Sadler and developed for TV by Rick Gitelson, Handy Manny is a produced by Nelvana Limited in association with Disney Channel.
  • Disney Channel has ordered a second season of its Playhouse Disney series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, which in addition to airing in the US also runs in 10 other countries.
  • Johnny & The Sprites will expand from its current short-form status to a full half-hour series, which will air as part of the Playhouse Disney block.  The series, created by writer, executive producer and its star, John Tartaglia (Avenue Q), aims to model positive social behavior and respect differences in people, places and cultures.


Cartoon Network premieres its new original animated series Squirrel Boy this Friday, July 14 at 7p.  Squirrel Boy (13 x 30 min) revolves around a 10 yr-old boy and his pal and know-it-all pet squirrel, who take off in adventures in the neighborhood.  The series is created and executive produced by Everett Peck and is being produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank.

Hannah Montana (26 x 30 min) will make its Canadian debut on Family Channel this August 4 at 5:35p.  The live action series stars actress/singer Miley Cyrus as the title character and her real-life father country music recording artist Billy Ray Cyrus as the character’s father.  Hannah Montana was created by Michael Poryes, Rich Correll and Barry O’Brien for Disney Channel.  Produced by Laugh Productions, a season two of Hannah Montana is currently in production.


Monogram International, Inc., a producer of giftware/novelty toys/souvenirs, and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. have inked a multi-year license pact to produce items featuring superhero characters.  Initially Monogram plans to expand the bank, drink-ware and desk accessories lines, featuring characters including Captain America, X-Men Classics and The Fantastic Four, with the Spider-Man 3 movie merchandising agreement already in place.  Specific products will include paperweights, travel mugs, glassware, bobbleheads, keychains, and personalized items such as magnets, stickers, pens and journals.

Nicktoons Network will build up to the launch of its 3rd annual Nicktoons Network Animation Festival with a five city Nicktoons Network Mobile Tour beginning this Saturday, July 15, for five weekends in a row making stops in NY, Boston, Detroit, Houston and LA.  The final stop takes the tour to the Nicktoons Studios in Burbank, CA (August 12 & 13) where the network will host its first Nicktoons Network Animation Festival two-day live event: Kids’ Day and Creators’ Day, where this year’s Student Award, Diversity Award and Producer’s Choice Award winners will be named.  The festival will officially get under way on premiere on the network and online August 26-31.  Folks can see the animated shorts selected to vie in this year’s festival from August 1, and view and vote on the shorts from August 26-September 15 at www.nicktoonsnetwork.com.

Beginning this week, for a limited time, Kohl’s Department Stores will offer four custom edition books from Animal Planet, in addition to corresponding plush animals, at its stores nationwide as well as at its website.  The books each highlight one of four animals that live in the African Savanna in stories about the behavior and lifestyle accompanied by facts and photos of the animals: Tembo Takes Charge (elephant), Milia’s Big Day (zebra), Katya’s Busy Morning (tiger), and Dedan Saves the Day (giraffe).  Under the Kohl’s Cares for Kids initiative, the retailer will offer the items for $5 each, with 100% of the net profits benefiting kid’s health and educational opportunities across the country.

Genius Products has entered into a 5-year deal with ESPN Enterprises, Inc. to serve as the exclusive distributor of ESPN Home Entertainment content in North America.  Under the pact Genius will distribute a minimum of 15 titles a year, with the first titles being released last month.


Mattel will a one-day Hot Wheels festival in the ever-so small town of Speed, Kansas (population 35, as in 30 + 5, 3 x 10 + 5) this August 6, to pay tribute to the rural highways in the US and the car culture that grew out of smalls towns like this giving way to drag racing, muscle cars and other engine manipulations began.  The event, expected to draw collectors and auto enthusiasts, will feature a parade featuring a life-sized Hot Wheels car and including a showing of classic cars and hot rods, a motorcycle show.  Collectors alert, a commemorative Hot Wheels event car will be given out at the event.


Nada Stirratt has been named to the newly created position of EVP/Digital Ad Sales, MTV Networks.  Stirratt will be responsible for all digital ad sales and strategy and expanding market coverage and opportunities across MTVN’s brands and platforms.  Most recently Stirratt was SVP & GM/Publishing Services, Advertising.com.  Previously she toiled in ad sales and business development for AOL-Time Warner, Moviefone, Allure and Cosmopolitan.

Starz Entertainment Group LLC has upped Clif Watkins to Executive Director/Channel Management, Encore Movie Pack and Movieplex Movie Pack.  Watkins will be responsible for developing the strategic direction the Encore Movie Pack and Movieplex Movie Pack, and oversee the channels’ monthly promotional and creative production plans.  He will continue to work out of the SEG HQ in Colorado, and report to David Charmatz, SVP/Channel Management.  Prior to this Watkins was Director/Affiliate Marketing and Strategy.  Previously he worked for AT&T Broadband and Comcast Cable.

Jeffery E. Wittmann, B.A. (Hons.), LLB, has been appointed Director/Business & Legal Affairs, Studio B Productions Inc.  Wittmann will focus and lead the crafting of series and digital sales and licensing deals.  Prior to joining Studio B, Wittmann practiced entertainment law and commercial litigation in a private practice for 14+ years, including advising Canadian and US studios, producers, writers, voice artists, talent agencies, post-production facilities and distribution companies.


The Nickelodeon animated series Avatar The Last Airbender has taken the top spot for season pass offerings on iTunes.  Following Avatar in the list of season pass sales are 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup and NBA Eastern Conference, in second and third place respectively.
