WGN America formed a new partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to begin airing the first-run, original show WWE Superstars beginning this April. WWE Superstars, a 60m weekly series produced by WWE, will highlight various Superstars and Divas from the three WWE franchises. The program will air Thursday nights at 8p and 11p and with a third run on the weekend.

Ovation TV will premiere two new series later this month as part of its week-long “Everything is Art” programming event exploring art in design and architecture:

  • Dan Cruickshanks’ Adventures in Architecture – over seven consecutive nights, historian/writer Dan Cruickshank takes viewers around the globe showing how architecture reflects particular ideas. U.S. TV premiere on January 25 at 9p with new episodes each night; then two new episodes air back to back on January 31 at 8p.
  • Designer People – new series profiles international designers. U.S. TV premiere on January 26 with two episodes airing nightly beginning at 8p through January 29.

A&E Network rang in the New Year with the debut of season eight of the real-life justice series The First 48 last Thursday at 9p. The opening episode attracted 1.3 million A25-54 viewers, 1.4 million A18-49 viewers and 2.3 million total viewers.

During NBC’s Super Bowl XLIII broadcast on February 1, viewers will need 3-D glasses to view a 90-second commercial promoting the March release of animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens from DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the 90-second commercial plus giving away 150 million pairs of 3-D glasses through 28,000 retail locations via the Pepsi/SoBe Life displays will cost “tens of millions of dollars” and he calls the deal “perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history.” A single 30-second ad in the Super Bowl is tabbed at approximately $3 million.

Bravo is back in Manhattan as season two of The Real Housewives of New York City debuts February 17 at 11p following the finale of The Real Housewives of Orange County. The series will shift to its normal time slot of Tuesdays at 10p starting February 24.

New York viewers will get extra financial insight into the current economic crisis as The New York Times business reporter/columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin hosts a new seven-episode series It’s the Economy, NY! What’s Happening and What It Means to You. From WNET.ORG, the series opens this Thursday on New York public television stations THIRTEEN at 8p and WLIW21 at 1130p. During each episode, Sorkin will interview top financial leaders focused on topics important to New Yorkers.

Broadstripe Communications, formerly named Millennium Digital Media, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. From a statement on the company’s website, Broadstripe opted to file for Chapter 11 protection to reinforce its financial balance sheet and to reorganize its financial obligations a process that company CEO Gustavo Prilick says will take several months yet should be completed in 2009. Broadstripe currently has approximately 93,000 subscribers in systems in Michigan, Maryland, Washington and Oregon.

Lionsgate made an agreement with Macrovision Solutions Corporation allowing Lionsgate to purchase the TV Guide Network and TV Guide Online for $255 million in consideration. A previous sell agreement with Allen Shapiro and One Equity Partners for the same properties from December 18, 2008 was “terminated” by Macrovision. This new deal between Lionsgate and Macrovision is expected to close February 28, 2009 and is pending normal closing conditions and certain indemnifications.   As to why the previous deal had been terminated in lieu of the new deal with Lionsgate, a spokesperson for Macrovision provided this information:  When Macrovision set out to sell its media properties (TV Guide Magazine, TV Guide Network and TV Games Network) it had identified several criteria as critical to any agreement – they are: high certainty to close, speed to close, overall terms and conditions, and value to Macrovision of the transaction.  Macrovision believes that this transaction with Lionsgate has a higher likelihood of close and has fewer conditions to the close.  In addition, we believe the Lionsgate transaction would close sooner than the previous transaction.

Also cast is Jon Seda as Joe Matty, a grumpy yet lovable character. Both will join previously cast Kristin Chenoweth in the Warner Bros. TV-produced legal drama.

USA Network handed a series pickup to Royal Pains, ordering 11 60m episodes as well as the two-hour pilot, per THR.
