NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! … Mulan, Mulan, Mulan!
China’s Jiang Tong Animation Co. Ltd. is developing and producing an animated TV series version of Mulan, based on the ancient Chinese allegorical poem Mu Lan Ci. Expected to be completed by the end of this year the series, titled Hua Mulan (52 x 22′) will more closely reflect the patriotic bent of the original text in which the heroic young girl, Mulan, dons men’s clothing and takes her aging father’s place in the imperial army, ultimately fighting off the Huns. So popular is the story of Mulan, which was made widely popular outside of China by Disney’s animated movie Mulan (1998), the story has also been adapted as a musical/opera, Mulan Psalm that has been running in China for about a year and was also performed at NY’s Lincoln Center. Additionally, the Weinstein Company is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of Hua Mulan to be released under the company’s new Dragon Dynasty banner.
