Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Dav Patel, star of Slumdog Millionaire, will play Zuko in writer/director M. Night Shyamalan‘s live-action feature film The Last Airbender, per Variety. The Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies picture is based on Nickelodeon‘s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Patel takes on the role of the Fire Nation’s evil Zuko, which was originally to be played by Jesse McCartney until schedule conflicts arose. The Last Airbender is slated for a July 2, 2010 release.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Throughout the month of February Cartoon Network‘s new Jib & Crash promotion will give viewers an inside look at the movie The Pink Panther 2 in a 60-second spots. Sony Pictures releases The Pink Panther 2 nationwide this Friday, February 6, 2009.
New episodes of Disney Television Animation’s series Phineas and Ferb will premiere on Disney XD (currently known as Toon Disney) and in streaming video on DisneyXD.com, beginning Monday, February 16, with a 17-episode Phineas and Ferb TV marathon (8a-4:30p). During the marathon a new episode, featuring guest star Geraldo Rivera, debuts at 4:30p. New episodes will air daily from February 16-21 at 4:30p; the series then moves to its regular time slot on Saturday, February 21, 8a) on Disney XD. Targeted to K6-14, Disney XD TV channel, online and VOD and mobile platforms launches on Friday, February 13 at midnight.
Disney Channel honors Black History Month this February 2009 with programming including series of 2-3 minute interstitials featuring real kids from across the US telling their stories and talking about their goals, as well as several of its original TV movies. The network line-up of original TV movies set to air this month include (check local listings as each will air multiple times): The Color of Friendship; Jump In!; The Cheetah Girls; The Cheetah Girls 2; The Cheetah Girls One World; Twitches; Twitches Too; and The Proud Family Movie.
Nickelodeon salutes Black History Month with a new series of six interstitials featuring music by The Roots and animated profiles of great African Americans and a vignette series entitled Dreams, which focuses on the contributions of African Americans in history. Additionally, the network will air the previously announced Nick News special We Shall Not Be Moved on February 8, 9p, as well as other Nick News specials this month including Martin Luther King (2/15, 9p) and The Legacy of Slavery (2/22, 9p). The Roots interstitials will also air on Nick Jr. and Noggin, and will stream on Nick Jr. Video all this month. NickJr.com will offer new printable trading cards featuring notable African Americans from all walks of life (e.g. President Obama to Jackie Robinson). Themed coloring pages, videos, and a suggested reading list to help parents educate their kids about Black History Month themes will also be available online.
Portfolio Entertainment inks a range of broadcast deals for kids and tween series across Europe, Africa and Asia.
- DeAgostini Editore’s new channel DeA Kids (Italy) acquires the animated series Carl2 (65×30) with RTBF picking up the first two seasons (39×30) of Carl2 for French-speaking Belgium. Renewing the fourth season of Carl2 is Canal + Cyfrowy/Zig Zap (Poland), while KTV (South Africa) signs on for an additional 13 episodes of the series.
- National Geographic International picks up 26×30 episodes of Heads Up!, a kid-targeted astronomy series, for Turkey, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
- Jim Jam acquires the preschool puppet series Igloo-Gloo (26×25) for Asia.
- Minimax takes the animated series Toad Patrol (26×30) for air in Romania and Ex-Yugoslavia feeds.

Every Baby Company enters into a partnership with The Little Little Little Toy Company for the sales and distribution products based on its eebee’s adventures ( www.eebee.com ) property to specialty toy retailers in the US and Canada.
Scholastic Media and its property Clifford The Big Red Dog launch the new campaign Be Big! and creates the Be Big Fund. A national program, Be Big! ( www.scholastic.com/cliffordbebig ) encourages kids and adults to make the world a better place through Clifford’s Big Ideas (share, help others, be kind, be responsible, play fair, respect others etc.). Scholastic is supporting community efforts to recognize people for their Be Big actions, bring about change in local communities and provide resources to share ideas. Scholastic has joined with FAOSchwarz for the launch of the Be Big program; with the retailer currently offering exclusive Be Big tagged Clifford Plush toys. Beginning February 5, FAO Schwarz’s NYC store will feature Be Big window displays and on February 11 will host an official Be Big event. Scholastic will donate 10% of the net proceeds from the sale of select FAO Schwarz Clifford Be Big! products to the Be Big Fund at HandsOn Network ( www.handsonnetwork.org ), an arm of the Points of Light Institute.

Bandai America Inc. appoints Mark Schaffner as EVP/Toys. Reporting directly to Sho Omatsu, President, Bandai America, Schaffner will oversee the company’s sales and marketing departments, as well as developing new partnerships and strategies. A veteran of the consumer electronics industry, Schaffner toiled for Philips Electronics as VP/Global Product Development & Marketing-Accessory Division, as well as previously serving as President/Power Sentry Division, Fiskars Brands, Inc., prior to being acquired by Philips.
