Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Nick Movies has acquired Unicorn, a fantasy-comedy script from writer Joe Aucoin, according to Variety. The project has been set-up with producer John Jacobs and his company Smart Entertainment. Set in NYC, the story revolves around a 5-year-old girl who wants a unicorn.
The new original animated TV series Land Before Time (26×30) is set to premiere on Cartoon Network on Monday, March 5, at 9:30a. Based on Universal’s Land Before Time movies and DVDs, the new series features a combination of 2D animation against 3D backgrounds. Over the course of the series the young dinosaurs will explore both the good and bad in and around the Great Valley, all the while learning about friendship and differences, with each episode featuring music, adventure and teamwork.
Nick Jr. will offer up new episodes of Go, Diego, Go! from Monday, March 5 through Thursday March 8 at 9:30a. Preschoolers will learn about a range of animals indigenous to Latin America (e.g. tapirs, roadrunners, hawks etc.) during these four new episodes.
Frank Miller, a veteran of the comic book industry, will be featured of a new episode Icons: Frank Miller, G4’s documentary/biography series, airing Sunday, March 4 at 11p. The episode focuses on Miller’s work over the years as a creator of popular comic books, characters and graphic novels, many of which have and are being adapted for feature films including 300 and Sin City, the latter which he co-directed with Robert Rodriguez. Miller will also discuss his next movie, an adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit.
Discovery Kids en Espanol is introducing an experiential component into its programming mix to enhance learning and children’s viewing experience. The network’s new host, Doki, a new integrated animated figure, will also have an online component with educational activities at www.discoverykidsespanol.com. The programming offerings that will form a part of the Doki experience this year include:
- Peep – A series celebrating the active curiosity of 3 birds, a chicken, a robin and a duck
- ToddWorld – An animation series in which each episode illustrates the idea, “It’s OK to be different”
- Hi-5 – A live-action, musical series for preschoolers hosted by young kids and their puppet friends Jup Jup and Chatterbox
- Save-Ums – A team of little heroes ready to rush to the aid of anyone, anywhere, anytime
- Harry & His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs – An animation based on the books of Ian Whybrow and Adrian Reynolds
- Paz – The trials of a black-and-white baby penguin with yellow markings
- Animal Jam – A preschool music and movement live-action series set in a jungle for the K2-6 set
In Sweden, The Zodiak Television Group has acquired Yellow Bird, a film and TV production company from its owners Ole Søndberg, Henning Mankell and Lars Björkman. Yellow Bird is known for producing dramatic TV and movie projects, which are often based on popular books and/or original scripts. Yellow Bird has an exclusive agreement with the best-selling author and co-owner Mankell, and over the last two years has produced thirteen movies based on his famous detective character Kurt Wallander. Mankell writes novels for kids, teens and adults and his books have been translated into 36 languages. Yellow Bird is currently in production on a range of projects. Mikael Wallen, currently Managing Director, MTV Mastiff, Sweden will join Yellow Bird next month as its Managing Director.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Marvel Entertainment, Inc., has completed a raft of deals for the licensing and merchandising programs for Marvel Studios’ feature films Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, which are slated for release in 2008, on May 2 and June 13 respectively. Marvel newly signed pacts with licensees across multiple categories, will see the development of product lines based on the two films including: Hasbro (master toy licensee), Hallmark (social expressions and party goods), Kids Headquarters (boys & girls apparel), Jay Franco (domestics), Mad Engine (t-shirts), Fruit of the Loom (underwear), Disguise (costumes), BBC (footwear), Berkshire (headwear and cold weather), Mega Bloks (constructions toys) and Jakks Pacific (plug and play games).
In other Go, Diego, Go! news, Nickelodeon and Miami Metrozoo, and the Zoological Society of Florida have entered into a five-year strategic partnership that will feature a Go, Diego Go! stage show in the Zoo’s newest exhibit Amazon & Beyond. The show will include a host, animals and handlers and various activities based on the Nick Jr. series. Currently under construction, the Amazon & Beyond exhibit will display a collection of tropical American flora and fauna, the largest of any zoo in the US, when it opens in late 2008. Until the exhibit is ready to open, beginning spring 2007 Diego will temporarily reside at the Commercebank and Children’s Zoo, within the Miami Metrozoo, where special Nick Jr. programming and appearances are scheduled to take place. Comcast in Miami will support the new exhibit by building local awareness on various Comcast cable networks such as Nickelodeon with spots featuring Diego at the zoo. These will run in April and run through the exhibit opening in 2008.
STONE SOUP
National Geographic Kids magazine is looking for America’s Most Amazing Pet. Kids in the US are asked to can submit a one-minute video, color photo or comic creation and a 50-100 word story about why their pet should be selected. The contest is sponsored by Planetwide Media’s Comic Book Creator software and SeaWorld and Busch Gardens. The goal of the contest is to encourage people to take on pets responsibly. EXECUTIVE MOVES
Cindy Rose has been named SVP and Managing Director, Walt Disney Internet Group Europe, Middle East and Africa. Rose will manage all aspects of WDIG’s European regional operations, which encompass premium subscription content and Internet-based services, including broadband, interactive TV and mobile applications, as well as the 14 local European versions of Disney.com. For the next 12-18 months, Rose primary focus will be on the rollout of Disney’s newly redesigned website, which launched in the US earlier this year, across the main European markets. Rose has been with Disney for 12 years serving most recently as SVP and Managing Director, Disney International, UK & Ireland, Middle East and Mediterranean regions.
Jeff Fleeher has been appointed VP and CFO/NBCU TV Networks Distribution and NBCU Digital Distribution. He will report to Bridget Baker, President/NBCU Networks Distribution and Jean-Briac Perrette, President/NBCU Digital Distribution. Fleeher will oversee NBCU’s financials for the affiliate sales and marketing operations, as well as digital distribution businesses, including VOD, Electronic Sell-Through, and wireless. Prior to this Fleeher toiled for the GE Corporate Audit Staff, where he previously held the position of Sr. Audit Manager.
Additionally, Eddie Gollhofer joins NBCU as Finance Manager, Digital Distribution. He will report to Fleeher and directly support Perrette’s Team. Gollhofer will be responsible for financial planning and analysis and commercial support for the digital platforms.
MTV Networks is reorganizing its ad sales staff to better integrate digital offerings with traditional cable network sales, according to Television Week. Its idea is to place three VPs in charge of larger groups to make it easier to pull together resources for multiplatform deals. Under the new alignment, MTVN president of U.S. ad sales Hank Close will oversee:
- Sean Moran, EVP/Music Ad Sales including MTV, MTV2, VH1, MTV TR3S, MTVU, MTV Classic, Logo and The N
- Jeff Lucas, EVP/Entertainment Sales including Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land and CMT
- Jim Perry, EVP/Nickelodeon Kids and Family Brands including Nick at Nite
Under the reorganization, David Lawenda will move from senior VP of ad sales at Spike to take a similar job at VH1. The overall size of the MTVN sales forces will be reduced slightly to put more emphasis on service and support.
