Cynopsis

12/09/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Yesterday, The Tribune Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a federal court in Delaware. Tribune, purchased last year by real estate investor Samuel Zell, owns 23 television stations and 12 newspapers including The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune as well as the Chicago Cubs baseball team. According to the court filings, Tribune has close to $13 billion in debt with only $7.6 billion in assets. Tribune said it will continue to operate its media properties during the restructuring and has adequate cash for operations. The Chicago Cubs franchise, including Wrigley Field is not included in the Chapter 11 filing. Chairman/CEO Zell released this statement: “We believe that this restructuring will bring the level of our debt in line with current economic realities, and will take pressure off our operations, so we can continue to work toward our vision of creating a sustainable, cutting-edge media company that is valued by our readers, viewers, and advertisers, and plays a vital role in the communities we serve. This restructuring focuses on our debt, not on our operations.”

Today’s Premiere:

Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E Network:
Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force at 10p
MTV: A Double Shot at Love at 10p

~ MORE STUFF ~

At the UBS media conference yesterday, Jeff Zucker alluded that NBC may cut back on its primetime hours … and well they are, sort of.  According to B&C, NBC will be moving Jay Leno to 10p on weeknights, thereby allowing NBC to cut back on its primetime programming as well as keeping both Leno and Conan O’Brien in house.  The start date is as yet unknown, but speculation pegs next fall.

Worldwide advertising spending in measured media could decrease by 0.2% to $458 billion next year versus this year with spending up 2.6%, according to the study “This Year, Next Year” from GroupM. The study also projects the U.S. ad spending will decline by 3% to $157 billion next year after spending has increased this year by 0.3% to $162 billion.

Bravo renewed four of its docu-series as The Rachel Zoe Project and Tabatha’s Salon Takeover will be back for second seasons and Flipping Out and Million Dollar Listing both return for third seasons.

TNT delivered 2.1 million A18-49 viewers for its new original series Leverage Sunday night at 10p. The Timothy Hutton-starring drama also attracted 5 million total viewers and it moves into its regular time period of Tuesdays at 10p beginning tonight.

As a follow up to a report in Monday’s edition, CNN officially renewed its head political anchor Wolf Blitzer through 2012, keeping him as host of The Situation Room each weekday. Blitzer’s Sunday morning show Late Edition will no longer exist. Additionally, chief national correspondent John King will anchor a Sunday morning block from 9a-1p starting January 18. The first hour will be a panel show centering on politics and the new Obama administration. King will contribute to the magazine show Reliable Sources hosted by Howard Kurtz at 10a then go on and anchor a mix of national and international news for the latter two hours.

Fine Living Network is planning ahead and will debut the new original series Closet Cases featuring “Style Guy” Lloyd Boston on April 13 at 10p. The series watches as Lloyd works with men and women helping them rejuvenate their closets and find their personal style.

Clarification: NBC announced the Jimmy Fallon nightly video blogs, available now as a preview of his new hosting stint on Late Night, can be viewed via the online portal www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com . New video blogs will go live each night at 1230a.
