12.08.09 Good morning – it’s Tuesday, December 8, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies. TALKING TO STRANGERS Everyone is talking about, suggesting, advising people to network. Networking is simply meeting others and exchanging contact information. Sounds simple enough, but the act of meeting someone for the first time is difficult for many. Though it may seem awkward to walk up to someone you don’t know and start talking, many people welcome being approached when done appropriately. Here are some tips on how to be successful when meeting people for the first time. Some people are going to be rude and/or ignore you. So what? You tried to be civil and engaging, they didn’t. Their loss. Go to dinner alone, and the movies and anywhere else where you’ll feel uncomfortable. When you feel at ease being alone in social situations, you will become more confident and therefore, more willing to interact with others confidently. Practice, and then practice some more. Talk to people who work at the local market, the policeman on the street, the cable guy, anyone with whom you have no business connection. This will help you start cold conversations and talk with people who have different interests than your own. Be the first to say hello, shake hands, and introduce yourself. Don’t wait for others to initiate contact. If you just nod and say hello, the conversation will often come to a screeching halt. Saying, “Hello, I’m John Cox, nice to meet you,” will almost always lead into a conversation. Be polite, common courtesy is very important. Read the paper. Be able to talk on a variety of things, especially current events. Listen. Do not dominate the conversation, and respond appropriately to the dialogue. Too often people are thinking of what to say next without ever really hearing what is being said. Be upbeat. If the discussion swings to the negative, bring it back to a constructive conversation. Ask questions, especially questions that imply the person you are talking to is an expert and you’re seeking their advice. Everyone loves feeling important and useful. If you are attending an event because of the guest list, research the attendees so you can discuss matters of mutual interest. Know when to say thank you and goodbye. Dragging on a conversation can eliminate any positive feelings you may have created during the discussion. Practice talking with people, but stay away from practicing actual conversations, this often comes off as schtick and insincere. Look to make a contact, not a sale. Worry about the sale later. Remember names. Repeat them often when talking to them. Everyone loves to hear their name. Always start with small talk. Let the person get a genuine feel for you, and you for them. If you disagree with a point of view, respond with, “interesting, I never looked at it that way.” You are not going to change their minds and instead of being a jerk, you’ve demonstrated that you are open minded. Always ask for contact information, even if at first glance, this is not someone you are likely to do business with. Circumstances change, for both you and your contact. For many people, networking is one of the most intimidating things one can attempt. The best advice is to practice, as painful as that seems, just practice. Good Economic News The US Economy lost 11,000 jobs last month, a much lower number than expected. Additionally, the unemployed rate dropped from 10.2% to 10%, again another surprise. Many economists predict that unemployment will turn around and the economy will start adding jobs by March. More help may be on the way as the Obama Administration will announce new proposals this week, intended to help combat unemployment. ~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
YOU CAN STILL NEGOTIATE SALARY By Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine Hiring someone always involves a large investment of time and effort. And the investment is even greater today because spending decisions are more closely scrutinized and there are more candidates to consider. There were meetings to get approval just to look for someone; debates about the responsibilities and salary range; time spent drafting ads and weeding through resumes; then all the interviews and subsequent evaluations. All this investment has culminated in your being offered a job: that gives you a great deal of power. But instead of overtly wielding this leverage, you need to be a bit more subtle. Ask them to reconsider their offer because you believe it’s not up to the market rate for the position or a candidate with your experience and qualifications. It’s unlikely they’ll debate your observation, and will instead simply try to negotiate or play hard ball. If they ask what you’re looking for add 15 percent to their offer and be ready to haggle. If they explain they simply can’t pay any more, ask for a review in six months instead of the typical year. Stephen M. Pollan is one of America’s most trusted and admired career and financial advisors and is the author of more than a dozen books including the national bestsellers Die Broke and Second Acts. Information about his practice and writing can be found at stephenpollan.com . Mark Levine ( gostryter.com ) has been Pollan’s collaborator for more than 20 years. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM truTV

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers Answered by Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine Almost every job fair that I have seen is primarily populated by pyramid operations and commission-only companies. Is there any way to determine which are legitimate and which are not without going to each and every company website and scouring Google for first-hand reports? The purpose of most job fairs is to make money for the organization that runs the job fair and to provide customer leads for the companies exhibiting at the fair. It’s rare to find a job fair that’s priority is finding employment for attendees. That doesn’t make them illegitimate. It just means you have to approach them warily. Unless you’re attending a job fair run by a not for profit agency or institution you have to assume the persona of cautious consumer, not eager buyer. And that requires research for which there is no short cut. When applying online for positions, specific contacts are not listed. How would one go about finding the person they should follow up with? You could try to reach out to human resources by telephone, but that’s a long shot at best. The posting is intentionally being kept somewhat anonymous. A better bet is to reach out to third parties who may have some insight into the workings of the company. Still, the odds of success aren’t high. Don’t feel too bad, however. Companies that don’t provide a great deal of information in their listings don’t expect personalized follow ups. Stephen M. Pollan is one of America’s most trusted and admired career and financial advisors and Mark Levine has been Mr. Pollan’s collaborator for more than 20 years. Have a question for our experts?
