Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
With concerns about the ever present and growing cyber crime and online predators such as stalking, cyberbullying and phishing, Facebook is setting up a new Safety Advisory Board to monitor and improve user safety on the site. The board is comprised of a group of five internet safety organizations from North America and Europe: Common Sense Media; ConnectSafely; WiredSafety; Childnet International; and The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). The board’s first task will be to oversee an overhaul of the safety content located in Facebook’s Help Center www.facebook.com/help.php . The plan also includes for board members to meet regularly to review existing safety resources for users, develop new materials, and seek out advice on general safety practices on an ongoing basis.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Jack Black is part of a pitch for a new animated feature film that has been acquired by Illumination Entertainment, Chris Meledandri‘s (Horton Hears a Who!, the Ice Age movies and the upcoming pictures The Lorax, Flanimals, Emily the Strange and Despicable Me) family-friendly production unit based at Universal, per Variety. The movie (yet to be titled) follows the search for legendary beasts/beings like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. The movie is being written by Jason Micallef (Butter, The King of Kong), with Black set to produce with his partner Ben Cooley under their Electric Dynamite banner. Meledandri will also produce. Black is not set to lend his voice to a character.

Marblemedia and The Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf (CCSD) launch the first kid’s animated American Sign Language (ASL) dictionary, www.aslphabet.com . The project, initially announced earlier this year, is a collaboration of three countries and many organizations, this prototype project will allow deaf kids to look up vocabulary in their own, primary language, ASL, along with the English vocabulary counterpart without having to rely on adults for definitions. Funding for the prototype comes from the Inukshuk Wireless Learning Plan Fund. Partners on the project are seeking funds that will help enhance the functionality of the service and increase the search potential from 100 to 1500 words. Further information can be found at www.deafculturecentre.ca.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Invented in 1943 by James Wright (no relation to Frank Lloyd Wright or Lincoln Logs), a Scottish inventor then working for General Electric in New Haven, CT, this product is both toy and used in a professional capacity. The unique properties make for hours of fun for kids, and helps astronauts keep their tools from floating around in space. It went to market for the first time in 1949, and was sold worldwide in 1961. Crayola stepped up and bought the rights to the toy in 1976. What is this fun toy? SILLY PUTTY Kudos to: Juli Lennett-The NPD Group/Port Washington; Meredith Rusu-HarperCollins Publishers/NY; EJ Offurum-truTV/NY; Russ Camlet-NBCU/NY; Peter Tomaszewicz-Tilt-A-Whirl Prods/Santa Monica; Richard Quan-Imaginary Time/San Francisco; Jerry Beck-Cartoon Brew/Burbank; Heather Peterson-Disney Channel/Burbank; Michael Decsi-Nelvana/Toronto
Today’s Trivia Question: Mention of this game in history is in the pages from India dating back to Gautama Buddha, in China, Korea, Japan, France and the Haida Native Americans of British Columbia as well as the state of California. References to some refer to divination, gambling or simply an easy past time. There is even a reference in the Bible referring to the “casting of lots”. The game has been called Mikado, Jitter Whobble, Spellicans, Jack Straws, Chien Tung and the Jonchets. What is this common classic game called today? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
