Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

With concerns about the ever present and growing cyber crime and online predators such as stalking, cyberbullying and phishing, Facebook is setting up a new Safety Advisory Board to monitor and improve user safety on the site.  The board is comprised of a group of five internet safety organizations from North America and Europe: Common Sense Media; ConnectSafely; WiredSafety; Childnet International; and The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI).  The board’s first task will be to oversee an overhaul of the safety content located in Facebook’s Help Center www.facebook.com/help.php .  The plan also includes for board members to meet regularly to review existing safety resources for users, develop new materials, and seek out advice on general safety practices on an ongoing basis.

Jack Black is part of a pitch for a new animated feature film that has been acquired by Illumination Entertainment, Chris Meledandri‘s (Horton Hears a Who!, the Ice Age movies and the upcoming pictures The Lorax, Flanimals, Emily the Strange and Despicable Me) family-friendly production unit based at Universal, per Variety.  The movie (yet to be titled) follows the search for legendary beasts/beings like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.  The movie is being written by Jason Micallef (Butter, The King of Kong), with Black set to produce with his partner Ben Cooley under their Electric Dynamite banner.  Meledandri will also produce.  Black is not set to lend his voice to a character.

As the drama and all of physical challenges draw to a close on animated reality series Total Drama Action, which airs Thursdays at 9p on Cartoon Network, who will emerge the winner?  Beginning now, viewers can log onto TotalDramaAction .com and vote for their favorite finalist, Beth or Duncan, and then tune in this Thursday, December 10 at 9p, to see the outcome.

Hit Entertainment appoints Media Mundi as its TV broadcast agent in Brazil, which in turn has completed its first deal.  Media Mundi inks a multi-year distribution deal with public broadcaster TV Brasil for Hit’s series, Barney & Friends, Angelina Ballerina and Thomas & Friends.  All of the shows are broadcast in Portuguese on TV Brasil.

KidsCo will be seen in Belgium and Luxembourg under a new agreement with French cable operator Numericable.  KidsCo is slated to launch on Numericable in January 2010, which will broadcast the channel in French, English, Portuguese, German and Spanish.  Programming will include shows such as The Wiggles, The New Adventures of Madeline and Dino Squad, in addition to Count Duckula, DangerMouse, The BFG and The Wind in the Willows, as a result of KidsCo’s recent deal with FremantleMedia, as well as KidsCo original programs including Boo & Me and Jass Time.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.  Let’s sing a song about a new ten-year deal between Hasbro and Sesame Workshop, under which Hasbro has the rights to make and market a range of toys and co-branded games based on the Sesame Street characters.  New Sesame Street products from Hasbro’s Playskool and games brands will be available in stores beginning in 2011.  Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.

Chorion enters into a licensing deal with LCR Hallcrest to create child safety Thermographic products based on the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters, which are featured on the Mr. Men Show on Cartoon Network.  The new line will be sold through Thermographics, LCR Hallcrest’s advertising division.

Marblemedia and The Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf (CCSD) launch the first kid’s animated American Sign Language (ASL) dictionary, www.aslphabet.com .  The project, initially announced earlier this year, is a collaboration of three countries and many organizations, this prototype project will allow deaf kids to look up vocabulary in their own, primary language, ASL, along with the English vocabulary counterpart  without having to rely on adults for definitions. Funding for the prototype comes from the Inukshuk Wireless Learning Plan Fund.  Partners on the project are seeking funds that will help enhance the functionality of the service and increase the search potential from 100 to 1500 words.  Further information can be found at www.deafculturecentre.ca.

Club Penguin hosts its 3rd annual Coins for Change campaign on December 11-21, 2009.  The annual holiday event invites kids who play on Club Penguin to donate virtual coins they earn playing games in the virtual world to support an important cause.  Kid players can choose (or vote) to support kids who are sick, kids who are poor or the environment. When the campaign winds down the players’ donations are converted into votes to determine how a $1 million contribution will be divided to fund projects being conducted by charitable organizations selected by Disney Online Studios Canada.

Discovery Communications appoints Peter Liguori, most recently President/Entertainment, Fox, as its new COO.  Reporting to President and CEO David Zaslav, Liguori takes over the reins from Mark Hollinger, who last week became President and CEO, Discovery Networks International.  As a member of the senior management team, he will oversee Marketing, Discovery Studios, Corporate Communications and Corporate Affairs, Business Affairs, and Media Technology, Production and Operations.  Additionally, Liguori will be the lead executive representing Discovery in its new joint efforts with Hasbro, Inc, and OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.  Liguori also will chair Discovery’s Content Committee comprised of the US Networks GMs.

BBC Worldwide promotions:

  • BBC Worldwide Channels Asia names Otto Leong, Director/Distribution and Business Development, as part of the pan-regional team responsible for the distribution of BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC World News in Taiwan and China.  Leong will be based on Hong Kong and will also be responsible for revenue growth and developing strategic distribution initiatives for the two North Asian territories.  He will report to mark Whitehead, SVP and GM, BBC Worldwide Channels Asia.  Most recently, Leong led worldwide distribution efforts for i-Cable, one of Hong Kong’s largest pay-TV services.
  • With the aim of growing its programming output across its localized EMEA channels, BBC Worldwide Channels ups John Taite to VP/Programming, EMEA.  He will have editorial control for all BBC-branded channels across EMEA and the respective schedules, media planners and presentation planners.  Taite, who had been Director/Programming, will continue to report to Dean Possenniskie, SVP and GM/BBC Worldwide Channels EMEA and David Weiland, SVP/Programming and TV Channels.  Additionally, BBC Worldwide Channels is expanding its EMEA programming team, creating three new Heads of Scheduling roles for Poland, Africa and the Nordic region.  Those appointments are TBA soon.

Cookie Jar promotes Brenda Bisner to Director/Licensing.  Bisner will continue to report to Lisa Streff, SVP/Domestic Consumer Products, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) U.S., Cookie Jar’s licensing division.  She will also work for Jim McGowan, SVP/Digital Content and Distribution, securing home entertainment partners.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   Invented in 1943 by James Wright (no relation to Frank Lloyd Wright or Lincoln Logs), a Scottish inventor then working for General Electric in New Haven, CT, this product is both toy and used in a professional capacity. The unique properties make for hours of fun for kids, and helps astronauts keep their tools from floating around in space.  It went to market for the first time in 1949, and was sold worldwide in 1961.  Crayola stepped up and bought the rights to the toy in 1976.  What is this fun toy?  SILLY PUTTY  Kudos to: Juli Lennett-The NPD Group/Port Washington; Meredith Rusu-HarperCollins Publishers/NY; EJ Offurum-truTV/NY; Russ Camlet-NBCU/NY; Peter Tomaszewicz-Tilt-A-Whirl Prods/Santa Monica; Richard Quan-Imaginary Time/San Francisco; Jerry Beck-Cartoon Brew/Burbank; Heather Peterson-Disney Channel/Burbank; Michael Decsi-Nelvana/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question:  Mention of this game in history is in the pages from India dating back to Gautama Buddha, in China, Korea, Japan, France and the Haida Native Americans of British Columbia as well as the state of California.  References to some refer to divination, gambling or simply an easy past time.  There is even a reference in the Bible referring to the “casting of lots”.  The game has been called Mikado, Jitter Whobble, Spellicans, Jack Straws, Chien Tung and the Jonchets.  What is this common classic game called today?    (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
