Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 2, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced nominations for its 36th Annual Annie Awards, which recognizes the year’s best in animated features, TV productions, commercials, video games and short subjects and a host of individual achievements.  In the movie categories, DreamWorks Animation leads the way with a total of 27 nods, including 17 for Kung Fu Panda, followed by Walt Disney Animation Studios, which received 9 nominations, and Pixar with 8.  On the TV side, Nickelodeon leads the way with 12 nominations.  The Annie Awards will be handed out at a ceremony on Friday, January 30, 2009, at UCLA’s Royce Hall in LA.  Below are select categories and nominees, but because we can’t print them all here you can find a full list of categories and nominees available to all at http://www.annieawards.org. Astral Media‘s Family Channel (Canada) will launch the third season of Hannah Montana on Friday, December 5 at 5:30p.  The seasons first two episodes of the Disney Channel series will be available on Family OnDemand beginning today.

Spellbound Entertainment signs two new broadcast deals in Italy for its preschool series, The Koala Brothers.  State broadcaster RAI 2 has acquired the first three seasons of 10-minute episodes and the special The Koala Brothers Outback Christmas (1×46) in a deal brokered by Lilium DistributionDisney Channel in Italy picks up the cable and satellite rights for all 78×10 episodes and the holiday special for The Koala Brothers.  The series already airs in Italy on pubcaster RTP, which acquired the series earlier this year.  Spellbound expects to complete a home entertainment deal for Italy soon, and is also in discussions with several Italian publishers and toy companies.

4Kids Entertainment has completed new broadcast deals for the HD, 3D CGI animated series Chaotic.  The first season of Chaotic is slated to launch on Gulli TV (France), Rede TV (Brazil), and Jetix (UK) beginning Q1 2009.  Additionally, the second season of the property, Chaotic: M’arrillian Invasion, has also been renewed by Teletoon (Canada) and Jetix (Latin America).

Taffy Entertainment inks a deal with Virgin 17 to bring the second season of the popular anime TV series Bleach to France, beginning in early 2009.  Bleach is primarily aimed at teens+.

Beyond Distribution will head to ATF, the annual Asian Television Forum will be held in Singapore December 10-12, with a raft of content including kid/teen/family-targeted programming such as: Lab Rats Challenge (65×30); The Amazing Extraordinary Friends (39×30); Snake Tales (13×30); Mythbusters (129×60); From The Ground Up (20×60) among others.

MARKETING/LICENSING

This month Kidtoon will feature Barney, the big purple dino, and his gang will in Barney’s Night Before Christmas all this month beginning December 6, as part of its in-theater matinee movie program. ( www.kidtoonfilms.com )

Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) teams with French pet company Penn Plax to produce a line of SpongeBob SquarePants pet accessories.  The multi-product licensing deal will see a line of dog toys and bowls, cat and dog collars, beds, apparel, fish tanks etc. launch in 33 European territories from 2009.  This also marks the renewal of a three-year pact between NVCP and Penn Plax, which runs through December 31, 2009.  The renewal also includes Nick’s preschool properties, Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go!

Cherry Lane Music Publishing Company, Inc. enters into a long-term worldwide music administration agreement with Marvel Entertainment, Inc.  The deal includes Marvel’s recent movie Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, as well as Marvel’s 2010 and 2011 film slate, which includes Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers, as well as Marvel’s established and upcoming animated TV series, including Wolverine and the X-Men, Super Hero Squad, Thor and The Avengers.

STONE SOUP

Chorion and Comic Relief are partnering to make the Mr. Men and Little Miss brand the face of Red Nose Day 2009’s Early Years fundraising effort.  Mr. Men and Little Miss characters will be featured at www.rednoseday.com/earlyyears and in Early Years Kits, which will be distributed in the UK in support of Red Nose Day.  Additionally, Egmont will publish a new Mr. Men story, Mr. Funny’s Red Nose Day, in February 2009 will see a portion of the sales from every book (about US$3.00) going to the cause.  Red Nose day 2009 will take place in the UK on Friday March 13.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop grows its marketing team with the appointments of Karen Driscoll joins as VP/Marketing Services, and Diana Polvere as VP/Market Intelligence.  Both report to Suzanne Duncan, VP/Brand Strategy and Marketing Group.  Driscoll will oversee development and marketing plans and consumer and trade programs to support Sesame Street and The Electric Company.  She previously toiled for Nickelodeon and Worldwide Biggies.  Polvere will lead a team responsible for consumer market, syndicated, and media research, which the group will share with producers and business partners.  Most recently, Polvere was with American Express.

Turner Broadcasting‘s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media (AYAKM) names Vicky Free as VP/360 Consumer Marketing and Tracy Barash as VP/Brand Development.  Both Free and Barash are based in Atlanta and report directly to Brenda Freeman, CMO/AYAKM.  Free will oversee multiplatform consumer marketing for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and all of AYAKM’s digital brands, including CartoonNetwork.com, AdultSwim.com and Cartoon Network New Media.  Barash will be responsible for brand health and development of AYAKM brands across all platforms and will work in tandem with the marketing, creative and research groups.  Free joins AYAKM from Turner Entertainment Networks where she was VP/Entertainment Marketing for TBS, TCM and TNT, leading the Emerging Markets and Partnerships unit. Barash most recently served as Director/Global Themed Entertainment, Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
