Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Tracy Beaker will be back in the new CBBC drama series Tracy Beaker Returns (13 episodes), once again featuring Dani Harmer in the title role.  The series is set to premiere in early 2010.  Picking up five year after the last series, Tracy is now a young adult and living with her foster Mom, Cam, and writing a book about her life.  Following a series of disasters, Tracy must find a job and winds up working at the home where she grew up, the Dumping Ground.  Both of the Tracy Beaker series were created by kid’s author Jacqueline Wilson, who also serves as executive producer on Tracy Beaker Returns.  A CBBC Production, the new series also stars Connor Byrne and Lisa Coleman, reprising their roles as Mike and Cam respectively, along with a new cast of characters.

Ranger Smith will be played by Tom Cavanagh in Warner Bros.‘ mixed live-action and CG animated feature film Yogi Bear, per Variety.  The cast already includes Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd as Yogi Bear and the rumored casting of Justin Timberlake as Boo-Boo.  Created by Hanna-Barbera, Yogi Bear got his own series, The Yogi Bear Show, in 1961.

Chello Multicanal and Zon Multimedia ink a partnership for the production, marketing and distribution of kid’s movie and entertainment channels across Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa.  The partnership sees the creation of a new company to handle these projects, Dreamia  Servicos de Televisao, of which Chello and Zon are equal partners.  The three companies will launch a Panda Biggs, a tween-targeted channel.  Dreamia will broadcast four channels, with the other three being the kid-aimed Panda, a movie channel titled Hollywood, and MOV, which will offer movies and TV series.  Chello will distribute the Dreamia channels in Portugal, while Zon will do so in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Another holiday programming shift for ABC, which moves the Peanuts hour-long special, A Charlie Brown to Tuesday, December 15, 8-9p.  The hour will also include a series of Christmas-themed animated stores, Charlie Brown Christmas Tales.  The specials had been set to air on December 8  and will play in place of episodes of Modern Family and The Middle.

The Grinch comes to the iPhone/iTouch with the Grinchmas app ($1.99).  The new How the Grinch Stole Christmas app is the first in a series of Oceanhouse Media created apps based on the Dr. Seuss classic.  Grinchmas is a casual snowball and present throwing game.  Additionally, Oceanhouse is offering the Dr. Seuss Camera  The Grinch Edition ($2.99), a greeting card maker.  Also headed our way is Oceanhouse’s how the Grinch Stole Christmas! E-book app.

4Kids Entertainment is named as the worldwide merchandising and licensing agent and brand manager for Dos y Dos by Latin American Multimedia Corporation (LAMC), a preschool-targeted Latino live-action series recorded in Spanish with several words/phrases in English and contains three or four musical performances.  Designed to encourage kids to speak in both Spanish and English and help them learn a range of social and motor skills, Dos y Dos is filmed in San Diego and currently can be seen in 42 US cities weekend mornings on LATV (Latin American Television Network).  From later this month, Dos y Dos will be available on DVD (six titles) and CD (7 titles).

BBC Magazines is set to launch the preschool magazine title In the Night Garden in Poland on December 29, 2009.  Licensed to Egmont Polska, the magazine will be published in Polish.  The In the Night Garden magazine is based on the CBeebies preschool series, which debuted in Poland in April 2008.  In the Night Garden Poland is the fourth international license for this title, which is also currently published in China, Middle East and Australia, as well as the original version in the UK.  Egmont Polska already publishes In the Night Garden and Teletubbies books as well as other BBC Magazine titles; CBeebies Weekly and Teletubbies.

Hit Entertainment names Sangeeta Desai to the newly created position of COO.  Desai has been a Principal at Apax Partners, a private equity firm and owner of Hit Entertainment.  Based in London, Desai will report directly to CEO, Jeff Dunn.  Prior to Apax Partners, she was in the UK Advisory group of Goldman Sachs, and before that toiled for JPMorgan in investment banking and equity research.
