Cynopsis: DIGITAL

12/18/07

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, December 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

With an end to the strike nowhere in site, at least seven groups of writers are actively shopping internet start-ups of their own, reports The LA Times. Venture capital firms such as Accel Partners and Spark Capital are mentioned as having met with writers about funding low-cost outfits in the vein of FunnyorDie.com. No writers are named in the piece, however, suggesting the sources aren’t quite ready to give up on the lucrative studio system.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NBC set a date of Feb. 18 at 9 pm ET for the on air premiere of Quarterlife, the 36 chapter web drama developed by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick currently in its 12th chapter on MySpace and other web outlets. A number of 8-10 webisodes will be spliced together into 1-hour episodes, which will also stream on NBC.com.

IFC News is embarking upon a multi-tiered election year news venture featuring on air and online programming incorporating several touch points for users and viewers. Digital components of IFC’s “Election Coverage for the Rest of Us”include an election webpage, live blogs, polls and political films from Media Lab’s filmmaker community.

The NBA launched a channel on online P2P TV service Joost comprised of highlights of current games and replays of classic match-ups. Joost also offers channels from MLB, the NHL and the IndyCar series.

TBS is launching a Spanish and Portuguese-language microsite of VeryFunnyAds.com on Wednesday, Dec. 19 with more than 20 commercials from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Meanwhile, the site’s best ads will be celebrated once again on TBS’s Funniest Commercials of the Year, premiering Dec. 26 at 9 pm ET/PT on TBS.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen will receive this year’s Vanguard Award from the Producers Guild of America, reports Variety. The award, which honors outstanding achievement in new media and technology, will be presented at the PGA Awards on Feb. 2 at the Beverly Hilton. Sims creator Will Wright won it last year.

Mobile IM platform Zannel has created a mobile website optimized for the iPhone with features such as persistent navigation and seamless transitions between sharing, viewing and discussing content.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Universal Music Group and XM Satellite Radio agreed to settle their copyright infringement lawsuit triggered when XM began marketing a portable player that made digital copies of music tracks. XM agreed to pay Universal a fee for each of the players sold with this feature.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Curious about what web video ads cost? TVWeek and Cynopsis: Weekender contributor Daisy Whitney has compiled a thorough rundown for Crain’s webvideoreport.com of what outlets are charging. The prices vary greatly, as you might expect, from a $90 CPM on WSJ.com to $35 for pre-rolls on Metacafe.com.

Advertisers in retail, pharmaceuticals, travel and packaged goods are following the lead of the automotive business and seeking to book more of their online budgets upfront, reports Mediaweek. A concern over being shut out of top web destinations is helping to drive the trend.

Online Advertising Predictions for 2008 from Mark S. Zagorski, CMO of MediaSpan Group.

  • The consolidation trend in online advertising will continue, particularly in the vertical Network segment where niche publishers will be snapped up by larger brands looking to strengthen their foothold and expand sellable inventory.
  • A user generated news portal will launch and will become the most highly trafficked news website in the world. Google will purchase it and will finally do what they said they wanted no part of – become a content producer – but will do so without hiring a single writer.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Hitwise released a report stating that just over half of Wikipedia‘s traffic comes directly from Google searches, suggesting the launch of Google Knol could cripple the popular user generated encyclopedia. Google’s announcement has sparked a debate revolving around whether or not its attempt to form a depository of knowledge will lead to conflicts of interest because it will profit from page views of entries.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

AtomicOnline named former Internet Brands executive Mike Dodge to SVP/General Manager. He will be responsible for branding, strategic planning, business development, marketing, sales and operations for sites such as CraveOnline, SheKnows.com and TeenCrunch.com.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

If The Simpson’s tribute to the classic Noah takes a photo himself every day for 6 years whetted your appetite for past episodes, take this Simpson’s interactive quiz to test your knowledge of the show’s 19-year history. The game asks you to think of a Springfield person, place or thing then peppers you with questions to try and deduce who or what it is. User responses will actually help perfect the database of questions, which can then be applied to other games.
