Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Amidst a “sleeping with the enemy” FTC investigation into antitrust violations, Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced his resignation from the Apple board of directors. The relationship between the two companies has evolved to one of rivals in recent months with the launch of Google’s Android mobile operating system and Chrome desktop OS, explained Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The announcement comes directly on the heels of an FCC investigation into anticompetitive (and seemingly arbitrary) practices at Apple’s iPhone App Store.

Online radio broadcasters have grown like wildfire in terms of audience, but so far the services’ display ad revenue has not kept pace. Popular online and iPhone radio streaming service Pandora has found a new ad partner in Clear Channel subsidiary Katz Media Group. Katz has agreed to represent “a significant portion” of the start-up’s digital ad inventory via the new Katz Online Network, which currently consists of hundreds of terrestrial audio broadcast streams and some larger webcasting players including AccuRadio.com and RadioIO. The company’s national reach alone - Pandora’s audio ad product will now be represented by more than 200 Katz account managers across the country – should help the platform tap into a much broader range of advertisers, offering both national and geo-targeted buys.

Mobile internet venture Clearwire outlined the next 10 markets it will launch its 4G WiMax  service in by Sept. 1, following the launch of “Clear” in Portland, Atlanta, Baltimore and Las Vegas earlier this year. Clear will soon be available in Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Wash.; and eight markets throughout Texas, including: Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Killeen/Temple, Waco and Wichita Falls.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Advocacy group Consumer Watchdog called on Genentech Board Chairman Arthur D. Levinson to resign as a director of either Google or Apple, following the resignation of Eric Schmidt from the Apple board.

Cambridge, England-based Plastic Logic is working on a new e-book reader with a flexible electronic screen you could conceivably roll up and stick in your pocket, according to a report in The London Times. The device, which hopes to launch in the U.S. in the beginning of next year and in the UK later in 2010, will feature a touch-screen and a back-lit display. However initial versions of the e-book reader will not roll up due to fragility concerns.

Verizon’s FiOS TV service has improved its interactive Facebook and Twitter widgets, enabling viewers to actually send tweets and create Facebook status messages using the Fios remote and onscreen keyboard.

Princeton NJ-based cloud-based archival photo and video hosting solution Phanfare launched a professional level service enabling photographers and producers to utilize advanced software tools to store, display and manipulate content directly from the site. Phanfare’s Pro service is priced at $50 per 20 GB of content and requires a $100 annual fee.

Anna Marie Neri has rejoined XOS Technologies, Inc. as Director of Public Relations, to be based in the company’s Orlando, FL headquarters. Anna had left the company after XOS sold its Network business unit to NeuLion acquisition JumpTV.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Large organizations continue to find social networking to be a double-edged sword; you can’t beat it for free publicity but it can be a difficult medium when it comes to controlling the message. The NFL is finding itself in a sticky situation as Twitter usage among players escalates for the first time this preseason, notes the Washington Post. Not surprisingly, the prima donnas of the league who crave attention from traditional outlets are garnering the most followers on Twitter. Case in point is Terrell Owens; TO not only has over 100,000 followers, he’s got his own website, social network and online store to go along with his new VH1 show. The Bengals’ vocal wideout Chad Ochocinco made news last month when he announced that he planned to tweet from the sidelines during games. (The NFL promptly put the kabash on that idea, reminding players of an existing rule banning mobile devices from the bench.) San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman was just told by his coach that he’s not allowed to tweet from the Chargers practice facility on Friday, according to the player’s own post. So he called his lawyer, who found a loophole in his contract that suggests that he can tweet outside.
