Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 25, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
Hollywood is hoping that pushing a major release will help hasten the roll-out of a technology that hasn’t even settled on a standard yet in the U.S. 3D Technology is generating a lot of chatter after Panasonic announced it will power the global release of James Cameron’s long-awaited epic Avatar across multiple platforms in 3D. The medium itself will be a sizeable part of the message as Panasonic will underwrite a massive ad campaign to promote the availability of stereoscopic 3D in its Viera line of Plasma HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players, which presents two separate 1080p images that appear as a single 3D image with the use of special glasses. What’s more, Cameron himself will make personal appearances in a U.S. and European 3D promotional tour showcasing the movie and its technology. The Twentieth Century Fox/Lightstorm Entertainment production is expected to open Dec. 18 on as many as 3,500 3D screens nationwide.

Expanding upon its usual purview of weather conditions, The Weather Channel launches a new digital music site – TheWeatherChannelMusic.com – this morning, selling tracks from major labels and independent artists currently featured as background music on the network. Genres include rock, easy listening, acoustic and jazz classics.
 
Sundance Channel
will publish a new stand-alone “Full Frontal Fashion” site on Sept. 9 on the eve of New York Fashion Week. The digital component of a planned week of fashion-themed programming, the site will feature news, video and party coverage from Fashion Week and will evolve into a permanent destination by next Spring.

Video publishing start-up Magnify.net has expanded distribution with a new app for the Boxee media center platform to provide Boxee users with access to any of its 60,000 niche video channels including videos from New York magazine, Bicycling.com, and Tasteofhome.com.
 
Amazon.com disclosed the five finalists of the Your Amazon Ad Contest, Amazon’s first crowd-sourced national competition in search of a TV commercial idea from its users. The filmmaker with the highest average customer rating by Sept. 6 will receive the Audience Prize of a $10,000 Amazon.com gift card and a trip for two to the 15th Annual Gen Art Film Festival in NYC next April, where the video will be screened.

Break’s Interactive Engagement Suite combine some of the web’s next generation formats and prices placements based on quantifiable measures of engagement. The new ad units include:

tapped online ad sales rep firm Gorilla Nation to augment WWE’s integrated media sales and sponsorship team and represent the company’s branded online advertisement inventory for WWE.com and WWEKids.com.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A Swedish court has ordered the shutdown of the world’s most infamous file sharing site The Pirate Bay, convincing its ISP, Black Internet, to disconnect the site from its servers. However, The Pirate Bay has already relocated with a different service and plans to be back online within hours, according to TorrentFreak. Meanwhile, Magnus Bergman, Chairman of Global Gaming Factory X – the company that planned to purchase the site – filed documents to step down as head of the group.
 
Swiss Officials have demanded the shut down of the Google Street View service, claiming that the service violated privacy laws by photographing individuals and license plates without their consent, per the AP. Google plans to meet with Switzerland’s privacy rights regulator to discuss the matter this week.
 
QuickPlay Media
introduced a new mobile set-top box solution for cable and IPTV providers to integrate programming DRM, DVR capabilities, geographic access control and other functionality across multiple set-tops and mobile devices. QuickPlay also offers a soup-to-nuts content download service for smartphones, distributing shows from NBC, CBS and MTV to devices such as the BlackBerry Bold and Curve.
 
Switzerland-based Advanced Digital Broadcast announced it is adding digital watermarking capabilities to its TV convergence solutions portfolio. Civolution‘s “VTrack” watermarking technology will be integrated with ADB’s set-top box systems, enabling content owners to identify the source of unauthorized copies.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Mobile phone websites were the fastest growing sector online in the UK with a 58% increase in unique visitors from 7.7 million in July 2008 to 12.2 million in July 2009, according to Nielsen. Drinks brands such as Ribena, Baileys and Coke were a major factor in this sector’s growth. The Ribena site grew from about 12,000 unique UK Visitors in July 2008 to almost 950,000 in July 2009. Baileys went from around 6,000 to 540,000 UK uniques while Coca-Cola went from 164,000 to 678,000 UK uniques – a growth of 313%.

Yahoo
unveiled a series of upgrades to its Mail, Messenger and Search products, part of an overhaul that included its recent homepage redesign. Innovations included a new customizable “Application Box” combining Calendar, Notepad and third-party apps; and additional sharing features to make it easier to attach content and schedule events via Yahoo Mail.
 
Nokia
will enter the increasingly competitive netbook market with the introduction of the Nokia Booklet 3G, which will run on a pared down version of Microsoft Windows. The mini laptop features a 10-inch screen, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, weighs just 1.25 kilograms and will integrate with Nokia’s mobile GPS technology – offering location mapping in conjunction with the Ovi Maps gadget. Pricing and availability will be announced at the Nokia World event on Sept. 2.
 
After numerous rumored reports, Apple confirmed the release of the new “Snow Leopard” version of its OS X operating system on Aug. 28. It is the first Mac OS with built in support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, allowing business users to use Mac OS X Mail, Address Book and iCal to send and receive corporate email and manage contacts with global address lists. An upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard will cost $29 for a single user license and $49 for a family pack. Snow Leopard will also comes packaged with the Mac Box Set, along with iLife ’09 and iWork ’09 for $169.
 
RealNetwork’s popular Rhapsody music subscription service will submit apps for both the iPhone and Android this week for review by the perspective mobile platforms, according to the company’s blog.
 
After charging for its PGA Championship app, Turner will return to a sponsorship model for the release of its latest golf-themed iPhone app, per Contentinople. The free PGA Tour App will offer Wi-Fi-powered video coverage of the PGA Tournament courtesy of Nike, beginning with The Barclays competition this Thur. at Liberty National in Jersey City, NJ.
 
Seventeen Magazine‘s free Fashion Finder iPhone app, which allows users to search for local availability of clothes, shoes and accessories by look or price point, has displaced Zippo’s virtual lighter app as the top app in the Lifestyle category with over 75,000 downloads. The Zippo app topped the category for over a year.

Former DoubleClick marketer Andrew Rutledge has been named VP/Publishers Sales for digital advertising company PubMatic, joining former eBay executive Josh Wetzel as VP/Publisher Services. Andrew will also become the head of PubMatic’s New York office, helping to further expand the company’s nationwide presence.
 
Blair Westlake, Corporate VP of Microsoft’s Media & Entertainment Group, will serve as Gala Chair for the 37th International Emmy Awards, taking place Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 in NYC.

The success of TV show-themed Twitter and Facebook apps, Idol voting and other iTV integrations have taught us that viewers are desperate to “play along” at home with their programming, but so far the technology has limited participation to rudimentary text-based responses. RDF Digital USA, the digital arm of reality producer RDF Media, and mobile games specialist Artificial Life are teaming up to produce a kid-targeted interactive animated TV show entitled “Sleuths” that will enable mobile viewer participation on a level not yet seen in the U.S. Utilizing Artificial Life’s scalable MoPA-TV system, young viewers can register their own avatars that will appear on screen three times during each live telecast for elimination-style voting sessions. The show’s detective characters will ask the avatars to answer a question related to the mystery and kids watching at home text in their responses. At the end of each episode, a random selection of 5 avatars get to appear alongside the animated characters in a digital shout-out to kids who solved all three puzzles. Producer Max Benator, SVP of Multiplatform Entertainment for RDF USA, will initially pitch the show to kid-targeted cable networks as a unique 2-screen entertainment property with a wealth of sponsorship opportunities. (For instance, brands can offer free virtual goods kids can use to pimp out their avatars.) “A huge issue in interactive TV is: is it a game or is it TV?,” says Mr. Benator. “Ninety-nine percent of the time it’s one or the other – it’s never both. This is the first time it’s truly both.”
