~ MORE GOOD STUFF  ~

MTV, Sean “Diddy” Combs and producer Mark Burnett are partnering on the new reality competition series, P. Diddy’s StarMaker, in search of the next big music star. The ten-episode, 60m series debuts with a special 90-minute premiere August 16 at 10p. In each week’s episode, Diddy’s personally-chosen music industry leaders will test, coach and mold the next music superstar from among 14 contestants. The final winner will receive an exclusive recording deal with Bad Boy Records and a career launch managed by Diddy. Kimberly Caldwell hosts the series.

FOX set the series finale of King of the Hill for September 13 at 8p. The one-hour special episode marks the end of the series featuring the animated Hill family that has been a primetime fixture on FOX for 13 seasons. King of the Hill is a production of 20th Century Fox Television Production in association with Deedle-Dee Productions, Judgemental Films and 3 Arts Entertainment.

TNT renewed its medical drama Hawthorne for a second season. Starring Jada Pinkett Smith and created by John Masius, the series received a 10-episode order for 2010. Hawthorne is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with Pinkett Smith’s 100% Womon Productions, John Masius Productions and FanFare Productions.

CBS Corporation is selling four of its owned radio stations located in Portland, OR to Alpha Broadcasting for $40 million cash. The stations involved are: KINK-FM, KUPL-FM, KUFO-FM and KCMD-AM. The deal is subject to typical regulatory conditions and other approvals.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Ovation TV picked up the broadcast premiere rights to new episodes of Later … with Jools Holland. The UK music series will air Thursdays on Ovation TV starting September 10 at 8p. Prior to the US premiere date, the network will air a marathon of Later … with Jools Holland over Labor Day Weekend on September 5 through September 7.

South Asian entertainment network Zee TV was added to Charter Communications’ digital lineup in New England, serving customers in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Hearst Television’s WPBF/West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce and Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) made a new affiliate deal to launch LBI Media’s Hispanic network Estrella TV on the station’s digital channel 25.2 later this month.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

FOX gave a nod to a pilot called Ridealong from Shawn Ryan (The Shield). Ridealong is a cop drama set in Chicago focusing on three groups of officers. Ryan will pen the script and executive produce with production taking place in Chicago, a major focal point of the drama. 20th Century Fox TV and Ryan’s Midd Kid company will produce.

CBS tagged Mike Vogel for one of the lead characters in the new medical drama Miami Trauma, reports THR. The series, produced by Warner Bros. TV and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is about a team of trauma surgeons in Miami and Vogel will play one of the doctors whose personality is competitive and egotistical yet charming. Vogel will star in the upcoming feature film She’s Out of My League.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Facebook made a rare acquisition yesterday acquiring Mountain View, CA-based social media aggregator FriendFeed, a service that culls together users’ updates from a number of sites in real time including Twitter, Yelp, Netflix, Blogger and Flickr in a single stream. Apparently Facebook can afford it – the 250 million member social network says 83 of the top 100 advertising spenders in the U.S. now use the site to advertise including Johnson & Johnson, Nike and AT&T, per FT. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has predicted a 70% revenue gain for the site this year and expects that the company will be cash-flow positive by next year. FriendFeed will continue to operate normally “for the time being,” says founder Bret Taylor in a blog post.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.    

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Nickelodeon launches its new live-action preschool series, The Fresh Beat Band (20×30), with back-to-back episodes on August 24 at 12p.  Starring the new preschool-aimed music group, also titled The Fresh Beat Band, the series revolves around four music school friends and features a range of original music and is based on a music curriculum that encourages preschoolers to express themselves through music and learn about music appreciation, comprehension and terminology.  For two weeks following the premiere of The Fresh Beat Band, Nickelodeon will debut new episodes at 12p, with each Friday of those weeks (August 28 and September 4) featuring a repeat of the Monday premiere.  Additionally, the back-to-back premiere episodes will also air on Noggin, Sunday, August 30 and Sunday, September 6 at 7p.  Nickelodeon will support The Fresh Beat Band premiere week online and via wireless with dedicated playlists from this week including themed clips, music videos and a sneak peek of The Fresh Beat Band on Nick Jr. Video.  NickJr.com will offer activities to complement the series premiere (e.g. music-themed printables, crafts).  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: A re-do from the previous week, UNIV came in first Friday night by posting a 1.3/5 with A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. UNIV won the 8p hour with En Nombre Del Amor at 1.3/5 followed by CBS’ Ghost Whisperer repeat at 1.1/5. UNIV held firmly at #1 through 9p with Manana Es Para Siempre at 1.7/6 while NBC’s Dateline came next at 1.2/5. BET Networks added Karen Saunders to its BET News team as Senior Producer of new series, BET News In-Depth as well as Jason Samuels to BET News as Senior Series Producer of Heart of the City. Both report to Keith Brown, SVP/BET News and Public Affairs.

Adrienne LoRay was promoted to SVP/Human Resources with the Fox Television Stations (FTS). Effective immediately, Adrienne will oversee all HR and personnel duties on behalf of the 27 Fox O&Os, Fox Stations Sales, Twentieth Television and MyNetworkTV. Adrienne will report directly to Jack Abernethy, CEO, FTS.

Starting September 1, Anna Gecan will relocate to HGTV’s New York office as VP/Original Programming. For the past four years, Anna was VP/Content, HGTV Canada, working on such popular shows in both Canada and the US as Property Virgins, The Unsellables, Income Property and more. In her new stateside capacity, Anna will provide daily management of HGTV’s Knoxville and New York program production groups. She will report to Freddy James, SVP/Program Development and Productions.

National Geographic Digital Media (NGDM) appointed Robert Michael Murray as VP/Social Media. Robert will put strategies in place involving social media sites to connect NationalGeographic.com users and to display stories and the company’s mission across various digital platforms. He reports to John Caldwell, President, NGDM.

Triple 7 Public Relations added Nicole Pope as Director/Publicity and Tanya Taylor as Account Executive. Pope and Taylor will report directly to Carrie Simons, President, and will be based in Nashville, Tennessee.
