On April 13 at 1030p, MTV will present College Life, a new series documenting the freshman college year of a group of kids attending a Big Ten University in Madison, Wisconsin.  The students tell their own stories by putting cameras in the students hand, and capturing their daily lives, their academic successes and failures, and personal interactions with roommates, etc.  Additionally, mtvU, the MTV 24-hour college network, will launch a College Life contest, challenging students to produce and submit their versions of college life.  Finalists’ content will be showcased on collegelife.mtv.com and bestfilmoncampus.com, where fans will be able to vote for their favorite video.

The YES Network season premiere of the Joe Girardi Show Saturday afternoon delivered 143,000 Total Viewers, representing the most-watched telecast of that series.  The previous high watermark came last May 25th which delivered 133,000 Total viewers.

The CW will launch two original series this summer –

  • Hitched or Ditched, debuting Tuesday, May 26 at 9p, is a docu-series focusing on couples in long-term relationships who have not taken that final leap of faith into marriage.  Each couple has been nominated by a friend who thinks it’s time they fish or cut bait.  The couple has the option of accepting the proposition of marriage and set a date for one week hence … and at any time during the week either the groom or the bride can call the whole thing off.  The series is hosted by Tanya McQueen, and is produced by RDF USA in association with Next Entertainment.
  • Blonde Charity Mafia is a docu-series set in Washington DC and following the lives of that city’s most influential 20-something “Alpha Girls” who run the DC social circuit from charity functions to society parties.  The series is from Capital Hills Prods.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

As of April 2, the Africa Channel has launched in Chicago on Comcast Digital Cable Channel 133.  The channel is part of Comcast’s Digital Classic tier of service, comprising more than 70 channels. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

SCI FI‘s original series Sanctuary, ordered for a second season, has begun production in Vancouver.  The show is slated to return to the schedule this fall with 13 original episodes of the one hour drama.  Added to the cast in the upcoming season is Agam Darshi as Kate Freelander, a swindler, con artist and thief who finds herself in an uneasy alliance with Dr. Magnus after her business relationship with the Cabal goes sour.

Fox Reality Channel is set to begin production and casting for its newest original series, The Cindy Margolis Dating Project (wt).  You may recall Cindy Margolis was the internet’s most downloaded woman, and was also a 2008 Playboy celebrity cover model.  The show’s 8 one-hour episodes, produced by Glassman Media, is scheduled to begin production in June.  The show follows Margolis as she meets a variety of men, hoping to find Mr. Right.  And that takes us to our first casting call for the day …

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  In a move clearly aimed at threatening aggregation services like Google, the Associated Press announced a new strategy to take legal action against online outlets that use its articles without permission. “We can no longer stand by and watch others walk off with our work under misguided legal theories,” AP Chairman Dean Singleton said at the AP annual meeting in San Diego. As part of the initiative, the AP will develop a system to track content distributed online to determine if it is being legally used. New search pages will also point users to sources of breaking news that pay the AP’s license fees. The AP, under pressure to reinvent itself as its print clients face unprecedented revenue shortfalls, also announced commitment adjustments and further rate reductions of $35 million for 2009 – on top of the $20-$30 million in reductions granted last year. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Brilliant Films teams with Mike Newell (Prince of Persia, Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire) to direct its new feature film The Box of Delights.  The movie is based on John Masefield’s 1935 kid’s novel of the same name.  Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions, Hilary and Jackie) joins the team to adapt the screenplay from the original book.  Brilliant Films’ great Joe Abrams and Rory Gilmartin will executive produce along with Newell.  The story revolves around an old man who asks Kay (12) to protect The Box of Delights, a device that allows him to change size and travel through time.  However, Kay is in danger, but when he asks for help  no one believes him.  The BBC produced a mixed live-action/animated six-part series based on the book in 1984.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Friday – A18-49 Analysis:  Univision led the broadcast networks on Friday night among A18-49, with an average of 1.8/6 according to fast national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p Cuidada con el Angel delivered a 2.0/7, winning the hour over #2 CBS’ Ghost Whisperer with a 1.6/6.  At 9p Univision owned that hour as well, earning a 2.2/7 for Manana es para Siempre, again beating CBS who was #2 for the hour with Flashpoint scoring a 1.8/6. At 10p ABC was in front with 20/20 earning a 1.8/6; Dateline and Numb3rs tied at 1.5/5 each.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Gaude Lydia Paez has joined Fox Broadcasting Company as VP/Corporate Communications, reporting to Shannon Ryan, SVP/Publicity & Corporate Communications. She will serve as a liaison between the network and the press on corporate matters including ratings performance, senior executive initiatives and industry-wide developments. In addition, she will act as a spokesperson for FBC on behalf of senior management and will participate in strategic planning for the FOX brand.

Tammi Weed, Director/Music Industry Development for Gospel Music Channel has added Program Acquisitions to her responsibilities, and she will continue to execute strategy on original music projects for the network, working with record labels, artists and their management, producers, writers and publishers on their GMC initiatives. She will continue to be based in GMC’s Nashville offices.

ABC Television Network named Anthony Cole VP/West Coast Broadcasting Operations & Engineering. Anthony reports to Preston Davis, President/Broadcast Operations & Engineering, and he will be responsible for directing the Network’s BO&E team on the West Coast and helping to set strategic direction for overall broadcast television operations there.

PorchLight Entertainment appointed Courtney Colman as CFO and Don Mirisch as SVP.  The announcement was made by Bruce D. Johnson, President & CEO of PorchLight. Courtney will be responsible for overseeing PorchLight’s Finance, Accounting, Human Resources and IT departments. Don will oversee the company’s business and legal affairs.

Julie Shapiro and Tina Perry have each been named VP/Business and Legal Affairs for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, reporting to Alan Saxe, SVP/Business and Legal Affairs. Julie and Tina are charged with negotiating and drafting all deal items, talent, production, new media, licensing, affiliate, ad sales deals, and all other network related agreements.

Bradley Soroca is upped to the newly-created post of SVP/Marketing for the NBC Local Media Group, reporting to John Wallace, President, NBC Local Media. Bradley is responsible for establishing the overall brand strategy for the division and maximizing the value of integrated and customized marketing programs for advertisers across the traditional TV, digital media and out-of-home marketplaces.

Brandissimo! elevated two executives to better oversee the company’s continued growth in its online games and virtual worlds business. EVP/GM Andy Babb was upped to President; and VP Josh Fisher is now Executive Producer and SVP/Content.
