Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 28, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

In talking with some headhunter contacts, there is one piece of advice that seems particularly useful but oft times forgotten. Prepare for your interview by understanding the interviewer’s agenda. Each interviewer has their own unique way of assessing potential employees, but their core concerns are universal. What every interviewer wants to determine is: do you have the ability for the job, can you manage people, how well do you relate to people, are you a leader or a follower, are your strengths in line with the company’s goals, and what is your growth potential. Make sure all these questions are answered in a positive manner to make the most of your opportunities.

It is a common practice for an interviewer to ask an uncomfortable question simply to see how you respond. “What if I told you you’re doing very poorly so far in this interview?” At this point words become secondary to your actions. Are you flustered or do you remain composed? Is your answer aggressive or do you remain confident and calm? “If that is the case, Mr. Interviewer, I hope I can persuade you otherwise. I feel my experience, personal qualities and enthusiasm to work here at Company X will make for a tremendous experience for all involved.” A thoughtful – and more importantly levelheaded – answer to this question can create a very favorable impression.

Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage is a work in dynamic progress, designed with our readers in mind. We welcome your feedback and will try to incorporate any suggestions into our weekly coverage.  And if you have any specific questions or topics of particular interest you’d like our Experts to address, please let me know!  You can reach me – John Cox – directly at [email protected].

By Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine

Asking savvy questions is the best, and sometimes only way for an interviewee to exert some control over the process. Cloaking efforts at steering the discussion in the garb of inquiries lets you remain the supplicant as interview etiquette requires yet still create opportunities to make your best case. Here are five questions you should try your best to ask in any job interview:

1. How would you define success for the holder of this position?

By expanding the discussion of the ideal candidate beyond just skills and experience and into outcomes and results you shift from objective factors, which may or may not help, to things you can define yourself, such as your past achievements.

2. What are you looking for this person to do for you?

This is a great question to ask if being interviewed by the individual to whom you may directly report. Bosses don’t really want subordinates who are successful; they want subordinates who help them succeed. Asking this signals your willingness to serve his or her interests, and provides insight into what your real job would involve.

3. How would you describe the culture of this company?

This is the alternative to the previous question for when you’re being interviewed by an HR person whose real goal is to find someone who will “fit in.” Once you get an answer you’ll be able to cast yourself as the perfect company man or woman.

4. What are the principle problems the company is currently facing?

Show you’re a natural born problem solver who just so happens to have the cures to the organization’s immediate ailments.

5. What are issues you see the industry confronting in the near future?

Not only are you answer to the company’s short term needs, but you’re also a visionary who’ll be an asset for years to come.
