Boston NBC affiliate WHDH has changed its mind and will air the Jay Leno primetime show at 10p Monday-Friday this fall.  In a statement from station owner Sunbeam Television, station owner Ed Ansin said “Upon further consideration, we have decided to telecast Jay Leno at 10:00 p.m. starting in September. Jay is from Andover where I went to school.  I enjoy his humor.  We hope the new show is a big success.”

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

As Tiger and Phil Mickelson made a failed run for the green jacket in the final round of The Masters on CBS Sunday afternoon, millions tuned in.  The final 38 minutes of the tournament infringed on CBS primetime as three players were tied and sudden death playoff began.  Ultimately, the 7pm hour on CBS delivered 14.7 million viewers, and a green jacket to first time winner Argentinean Angel Cabrera. 
 
Showtime has ordered a fourth and final season of The Tudors, starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as King Henry VIII, expected to premiere in the spring of 2010.  The new season will include 10 episodes, and like all the others of this series, written by series creator Michael Hirst.

Premiering this Wednesday, April 15 at 1030p, on DIY Networks is the network’s newest original series, 10 Grand in Your Hand, proving it is possible to raise the value of your home without breaking your bank.  Licensed contractor and host John DeSilvia helps homeowners renovate their homes while saving money at the same time, thru expert advice and cost cutting tips. 

Friday night’s 9p premiere of PATTON 360 on History Channel delivered 1.5 million total viewers, with 532,00 A18-49, according to Nielsen ratings.

UPFRONT 2009: Sundance Channel

Sundance Channel announced additions to its slate of new and returning series for the 2009-10 season:

  • Spectacle: Elvis Costello With returns for a second season with 13 new episodes. Each hour of this series features intimate interviews with legendary performers and promising new artists, group discussions and impromptu “illustrative” demonstrations of the creative process.  Spectacle: Elvis Costello with is a co-production of Rocket Pictures, SpyBox Pictures, Prospero Pictures and reinvention entertainment. 
  • Be Good Johnny Weir is a new series of 8 episodes, with cameras following three-time US Figure Skating Champion and 2006 Olympian, Johnny Weir, along with his coach, friends, choreographers , costumer, and skating manager mom Patti Weir through the ups and downs of his career.  Weir is working toward what will be his last Winter Olympics in February 2010.  The series is from Original Media; Endemol, parent company of Original Media, will manage international distribution.
  • The Day Before takes a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on the day before the fashion show models take the runway.  The Day Before will have access to the backstage preparations of international fashion designers in the final 36 hours before the main event.  The Day Before is produced by Deralf and Story Box Press.

In development at Sundance:

  • Architecture School – a second season of this series is currently in development, following students of a prestigious architecture school as they work on a major project.  Six new episodes of this documentary series are planned.  Producers are Michael Selditch and Stan Bertheaud.
  • Don’t Bomb Kuala Lumpur is described as an “anthropological comedy series” from producer Mark Burnett, wherein a pair of up-and-coming stand-up comedians descend upon a brand-new city, guided by a celebrity comedy mentor.  The novice comedians must quickly become familiar with their cultural surroundings so that they can perform stand-up for the local audience, who will ultimately decide which of the two acts provided the biggest laughs.
  • Red Summer is based on the book of the same name from writer Bill Carter.  The series in six parts takes a look inside an isolated Eskimo village in Alaska,and its population explosion during the commercial salmon season.  The series is produced and directed by Bill Carter, and executive produced by Nanette Burstein and Jordan Roberts.
  • Top City Artist with Justin Bua (wt), aka Portrait of an Artist with Justin Bua is a series following the life of urban artist Justin BUA as he struggles to achieve gallery and museum notoriety.  BUA has sold more posters than any living artist, his work is featured in video games, music videos, on skateboards and shoes, and yet thus far has been turned away by the high-end galleries and museums.  This series is produced by Michael Yudin, MY Entertainment. 

And two acquired series:

  • Chandon Pictures – seasons 1 and two of this mockumentary series follows the adventure of Tom Chandon and his video production company, Chandon Pictures.  Chandon Pictures is written by, created and stars Rob Charlton. 
  • Is Your House Killing You? The US premiere on The Green on June 2, 2009.  This scientific makeover show features families who are invited to “detox” their homes.  Hosts Dr. Peter Dingle and Cedric Cheong lead the team of scientific experts as they work through a diverse range of homes in a CSI-style investigation.  This series is from Essential Viewing Production.

ION Media Networks will add an ION West feed, carried by DirecTV, providing time zone adjusted programming to customers in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.

The YES Network has reached a multiyear agreement under which Verizon is now distributing the YES Network in HD nationally on the company’s FiOS TV Extreme HD service. 

Image Entertainment has signed an agreement with Eurocinema to provide a variety of foreign films to US audiences via Eurocinema’s VOD channel  Films include Edge of Love, Innocence, The Tunnel, Kick ‘n Rush and Evil Aliens, among others.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Spike TV has ordered up a pilot from 44 Blue productions called Pirate Hunters: USN (wt), which takes a look at the US Navy operation ending the threat of piracy in the Gulf of Aden, as seen in the recent news reports off the coast of Africa. The US Navy is allowing Spike and 44 Blue Productions in-depth access as they embark on their mission from the military base in the seaside nation of Djibouti (bordering Somalia and Ethiopia) and on the open water.  Cameras will capture life aboard two US warships, the USS San Antonio and USS Boxer, as they patrol 1.1 million square miles of ocean for the pirates who frequent these waters. 

Animal Planet’s Jeff Corwin, typically seen climbing thru the damp underbrush of the Rainforest, or the desert regions of the world, will soon be found talking about food instead of animals and insects.  Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin received an 8 episode run on The Food Network beginning this fall, reports THR.  Cameras will follow Corwin as he travels around the world trying exotic foods, meeting people and learning about their varied customs.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Following reports that it was looking for a buyer for Skype, eBay has sold the popular website discovery tool StumbleUpon it purchased for $75 million in 2007. StumbleUpon is now backed its original founders – Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith, as well as a number of capital investors including Ram Shriram of Sherpalo Ventures, Accel Partners, and August Capital. Garrett Camp will assume the role of CEO of StumbleUpon.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Production has begun on Next X, a new reality sports series developed by Disney XD in association with ESPN.  The eight-part short-form series features five top professional action sports athletes mentoring amateurs, all kids 9-12, to develop the technical skills and know-how to be an action sports star athlete.  Set to debut Monday, June 8 at 7:05p on Disney XD, DisneyXD.com and DisneyXD mobile platforms, the series culminates in August with 1×30 TV and online special showcasing their experience at X Games 15.  Produced by Evolution Media, Next X will feature pro athletes Chris Cole (skateboard), Scotty Cranmer (BMX), Billy Marks (skateboard), Lincoln Ueda (skateboard) and Van Homan (BMX). Thursday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS and NBC tied on Thursday night in the key Adult 18-49 demo, each posting a 3.3/10 for the night per Nielsen, and each with series premieres airing that evening.  CBS led at 8p with a new episode of Survivor averaging a 3.5/11, while NBC was #2 with an original episode of The Office at 8p earning a 3.4/11, and the premiere of Parks and Recreation at 830p earning a 3.0/9.  The 9p hour was more competitive, tho CBS still out delivered its competitors with a 3.8/10 for CSI.  Hell’s Kitchen drew a 3.3/9 and the combo of The Office and 30 Rock on NBC averaged a 3.5/10 for the hour.  At 10p NBC’s premiere of Southland was in front with a 3.2/9, ahead of the CBS premiere of Harper’s Island which drew a 2.6/8.

Friday – A18-49 Analysis:   CBS takes the win on Friday, April 10th, in the all-important A18-49 demo, posting a 2.2/7 overall, according to Nielsen National Ratings. At 8p Ghost Whisperer’s 2.5/9 was enough to win the hour handily by more than a full rating point. The finale of Terminator delivered a 1.3/5 for the hour.  At 9p, the race was closer, with CBS still in the lead with a 1.9/6 for Flashpoint, outpacing Supernanny’s 1.8/6. The finale of Friday Night Lights earned a 1.2/4. Numb3rs was in front at 10p on CBS with a 2.2/7, ahead of 20/20’s 1.9/6 and Dateline 1.2/4.

Saavn (www.saavn.com), digital distributor of Bollywood entertainment, named Rishi Malhotra to President/COO of Saavn, and partner in [212]MEDIA. Rishi is responsible for further accelerating the growth of Saavn, and he will oversee programming, distribution, and strategic entertainment deals for the company.  Rishi will be based in Saavn’s New York City office.

At the Food Network, three Executive Moves:

  • Bill Kossman upped to VP/Program Planning, responsible for creating scheduling strategies and working closely with the Ad Sales to identify and execute revenue and ratings opportunities via special stunts and theme weeks. 
  • Brian Lando promoted to VP/Programming and Special Projects, where he will develop new programming, stunts and events while evolving existing programming.  Brian will also help create and identify new revenue streams through close work with the New Business and Ad Sales Marketing departments. 
  • Allison Page named VP/Programming, with her previous duties expanded to include oversight of the “In The Kitchen” programming block.  Allison will continue to develop and oversee new primetime shows, stunts and specials with the network’s top talent as well.

 
Shea Fontana raised to VP/Children’s Programming for Porchlight Entertainment. Her duties have been expanded to include the development, production and acquisition of all genres of children’s programming for PorchLight. Most recently, as Manager/Children’s Programming, she has been overseeing the development of PorchLight’s preschool and tween series.
