Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 7, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.  

Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Common Sense Media, a non-partisan group, have entered into a new partnership to offer parents Common Sense Media’s independent recommendations to help them make informed decisions about what their kids/families are watching/reading/playing.  Beginning next week, TWC plans to launch a co-branded area on its website (www.timewarnercable.com), and on Road Runner, its high speed online service, that will feature Common Sense Media’s ratings, reviews and media advice for parents about TV shows, movies, music, books, websites and video games, into its cable TV and high speed data services.  Common Sense is producing televised reviews and media information spots for TWC’s free VOD service.  Additionally, the companies will explore ways to make Common Sense’s ratings/recommendations available via TWC’s interactive program guide and TV listings search.  TWC launched its Family Choice programming tier in December 2005.

Vivendi and its Universal Music Group (UMG) have inked a deal to acquire BMG Music Publishing Group from Bertelsmann to purchase for a price tag of approximately US $2.1 billion, “in enterprise value.”  The transaction has been approved by both the Management and Supervisory Boards of Vivendi, and following regulatory approvals in the relevant countries, BMG Music Publishing will be integrated within UMG.  UMG is fully owned by Vivendi.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. upcoming movie Happy Feet will be 2-dimensionally happy when it is released this November 17, 2006 in Imax theaters, and simultaneously in traditional movie theaters.  Warner Bros. and Imax had expected to release Happy Feet in 3D, but have now announced that due to time constraints the movie won’t be delivered with enough time for Imax to make the conversion to 3D in time for the opening.  The companies are still looking into a possible 3D release for the movie at a later date.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The N will launch new seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation and its original series South of Nowhere on Friday, September 29, 2006 with 1hr specials of both shows at 8p and 9p respectively. 

  • Season six of Degrassi: The Next Generation, which is comprised of 19 x 30 min new episodes.  In support of the new season The N will run Degrassi’s 40 Most Go There-est Moments, four 30 min specials, featuring commentary from cast members, scheduled to debut weekly beginning this Friday at 8p. The fourth special will air at 730p as lead-in to the season premiere. The new episodes will follow the stories of returning students, a new student as well as several kids who graduated from Degrassi, and will address topics including drag racing, roommate issues, life in a wheelchair, school rivalry and of course, romances and relationships.  Produced by Epitome Pictures, Degrassi will air regularly Fridays at 8p.
  • The second season of South of Nowhere includes thirteen 30 min new episodes.  The new season of the teen drama will address ex-boyfriends, acceptance of differences, injury, pain killers, birth parents, step-siblings, infatuations, new relationships, death and inheritances.  I am so there!

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hard though it may be to believe, Tickle Me Elmo was introduced 10 years ago.  To celebrate the anniversary Fisher-Price Friends will launch its new T.M.X. Elmo plush (the “X” is for extreme) at retailers in the US at 9a on September 19, and the following day in the rest of the world.  There aren’t a whole lot of folks out there that have actually seen T.M.X. Elmo save for a select group of Fisher-Price’s senior management and marketing team.  T.M.X. Elmo will retail for about $39.99 and will be available at retailers including Wal-Mart, Toys “R” Us, Target, Kmart and KB Toys.

Shutterfly, a social expression/personal publishing Internet-based service, has entered into a licensing deal with Scholastic Media to develop and distribute a line of customizable Photo Books featuring Clifford The Big Red Dog.  Available exclusively at Shutterfly (www.shutterfly.com/photobooks), the Clifford Photo Books will be come in two drag and drop formats, retailing from $34.99 for the Story Book and $59.99 for the Memory Book.  This is the first time Shutterfly has incorporated licensed characters into its product line. 

Midway Games Inc. is developing a new adventure/fighting video game based on Cartoon Network’s series The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy for the Nintendo Wii.  The title will let gamers play as one of 15 characters from one of the network’s shows in the game, which is also scheduled to be available for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Game Boy Advance in time for holiday 2006.  The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy title will include content-specific game-play features available only on the Wii platform, but we’ll have to wait to find out what those will actually be.

RC2 Corporation has inked a new multi-year licensing deal with Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products.  Under the agreement RC2 will feature the network’s shows and characters on die-cast toy vehicles and playsets including: Dora the Explorer; Go, Diego, Go; The Backyardigans; Blue’s Clues, and SpongeBob SquarePants.  The products will be marketed under RC2’s Johnny Lightning and Take Along by Learning Curve brands.  Initial shipments under the Johnny Lightning brand are scheduled to roll out beginning in late 2006, with the Take Along by Learning Curve product line slated to ship in the second half of 2007.

Singer/songwriter/designer Gwen Stefani has partnered up with Huckleberry Toys to release a limited edition series of eight dolls called Love. Angel. Music. Baby.  Stemming from Stefani’s newest album, tour and music videos the dolls will feature costumes reflecting her distinct sense of style including those from her Hollaback Girl to the Harajuku Girls of Tokyo.  Set to be launch this fall, each of the eight dolls in the line comes with interchangeable outfits, exclusive collectibles like posters, pocket mirrors, trading cards and other accessories.  Huckleberry Toys is a newly-formed company that aims to develop imagination and creative toys for kids and adults.

STONE SOUP

In advance of the release of BarbieT in the 12 Dancing Princess, the sixth Barbie direct-to-DVD title, special free screenings of the full-length movie will be held in 47 cities across the country this Saturday, September 9, 2006.  The events will begin at 9a where kids and families are invited to meet Barbie in movie theater lobbies, followed by a screening of BarbieT in the 12 Dancing Princess at 10:30-11:50a.  The screenings are open to the public and theater locations can be found at www.Barbie.com/freemovie

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rachelle Zoffer has been named as Director/Interactive TV, Verizon’s FiOS TV.  Zoffer will be responsible for acquiring interactive programming for Verizon’s FiOS TV service.  Zoffer has served in management roles at Softel-USA, ShadowTV and Disney, where she managed early interactive-TV advertising experiments.

Amy Pascal has been promoted to Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and re-upped her deal with the movie studio through 2011.  She will serve as Co-Chairman to Michael Lynton’s role as Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.  Pascal will also maintain her previous title as Chairman of Sony’s Motion Picture Group and will co-report with Lynton to Sir Howard Stringer CEO, Sony Corporation.  Lynton will continue to serve as Chairman and CEO, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

RATINGS

The premiere of Fantastic Four animated series on Cartoon Network this past Saturday, September 2 at 8p, during its Toonami programming block, earned the network gains with K6-11 up by +18% in delivery vs. the same time period last year.
