For its third season premiere week, NBC is adding a third night of The Voice.  NBC will open The Voice as scheduled on September 10 with a two-hour episode at 8p followed by a one-hour episode on September 11 at 8p.  NBC will then add a third one-hour episode on September 12 at 8p.

In other NBC news, the network is taking its medical drama Saving Hope off its schedule and plans on airing the final two episodes of season one online.  The two episodes scheduled to air September 8 and 15 will be replaced by repeats of America’s Got Talent and The Voice.  Saving Hope thought will continue in Canada as CTV renewed the series for a second season.

HISTORY is set to air an eight-hour programming event, The Men Who Built America bowing on October 16 at 9p.  The series profiles five self-made men, Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford who are associated with innovation, big business, empire-building and the American Dream.  The series will feature exclusive interviews with contemporary business figures such as Steve Case, Mark Cuban, T. Boone Pickens and Charles Schwab among others.  The Men Who Built America is produced by Stephen David Entertainment in association with HISTORY.

This Friday, DIRECTV debuts a new late-night comedy show, The Nick and Artie Show featuring former sports talk radio comedians, Nick Di Paolo and Artie Lange.  The show will air Monday through Friday from 10p to 1a on DIRECTV’s Audience Network. 

Lifetime is venturing into a hidden-camera comedy series, Prank My Mom with Vivica A. Fox starring as host.  The network ordered 10 episodes of the series which will spotlight sons and daughters targeting their mothers with pranks.  Prank My Mom is set to premiere October 9 at 10p though the network will air a preview on September 27 and again on October 4 at 1030p.  The series is produced by Thinkfactory Media and Peter M. Cohen Productions.

Country music star Craig Morgan will host the new original reality television series Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge premiering on Outdoor Channel October 3 at 930p.  The half-hour series follows 14 outdoor enthusiasts as they battle to become America’s most all-around skilled outdoorsman, excelling at everything from archery to ATVs. 

Home cooks are the focus of Food Network’s new daytime series, Home Made in America with Sunny Anderson debuting October 6 at 930a.  Anderson criss-crosses America visiting these home cooks and tastes their homemade dishes.  Concentric Entertainment produces the series.

Beginning today, Style Network is serving up programming surrounding the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, formerly known as New York Fashion Week.  Style will further offer coverage of the Fashion Week’s events via its website, myStyle.com.  Tonight at 8p, Style will launch StyleCandy’s Trend of the Day vignettes.  Then beginning on Monday and each evening next week, fashion expert Jeannie Mai and Zanna Roberts Rassi, Senior Fashion Editor for Marie Claire report from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week; a one-hour special, Making a Model: 28th Elite Model Look will also air next Monday at 8p; four special episodes of State of Style with interviews from such style-makers as Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and Patricia Field will air Monday through September 13 at midnight; another special, The Style List: Fall’s Top Ten Trends is slated for September 11 at 8p; fashion-themed back-to-back episodes of Gossip Girl are set to air September 12 from 8p to 11p; and the special programming for Fashion Week will conclude with a telecast of the 2012 Style Awards on Style September 14 beginning at 8p.

Also tonight, MTV has opted to move its telecast of the MTV Video Music Awards to air from 8p to 10p in order to not compete with President Obama’s speech from the DNC.  Normally, the VMAs air on Sundays though the network moved it to a Thursday night to avoid going head-to-head against the season opener of Sunday Night Football. 

Bravo Media approved a fifth season of its docu-series The Rachel Zoe Project.  The series follows Zoe as she manages an expanded business line that now includes accessories, apparel and more, her employees in New York and Los Angeles as well as her family life.  The Rachel Zoe Project is produced for Bravo by Left/Right Productions and Original Media.    

In primetime on Labor Day Monday, ABC Family debuted a new season of Switched at Birth at 8p which drew 811,000 W18-49 and 1.13 million A18-49 viewers. 

Sunday’s three-hour finale of Pequenos Gigantes 2 on Univision delivered an average audience of 3.1 million total viewers.  In addition the Pequenos Gigantes 2 finale reached 6.5 million total viewers that watched all or part of the broadcast. 

On Saturday, BBC America debuted a new season of Doctor Who attracting 1.555 million total viewers and 723,000 among A25-54.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Cablevision and CBS Corporation renewed their content carriage agreements involving retransmission consent for CBS Owned Stations and continued carriage of Showtime, The Smithsonian Channel and CBS Sports Network.   Most of Cablevision subscribers are in the New York tri-state market served by WCBS and Cablevision customers in the Philadelphia and Denver markets are also covered.  Terms of the deals were not disclosed. 

Tricon Films & Television has become the exclusive worldwide distributor of IFC’s original scripted comedies, Comedy Bang! Bang! with 10 half-hour episodes and Bunk also with 10 half-hour episodes.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Law & Order producer Dick Wolf and his Wolf Films company are working with David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights) to adapt the ITV series Injustice for NBC. The legal drama is about a dedicated attorney with a dark past who tries to keep his complicated family situation apart from his conflicted feelings about the criminals he represents.  The original British series ran as a limited series in summer 2011 and starred James Purefoy.  Wolf Films will produce through Universal Television with Hudgins writing and serving as EP with Wolf, Danielle Gelber and Peter Jankowski.  Anthony Horowitz and Jill Green, producers on the UK original are also on board the US version as producers.

NBC is continuing a working relationship with Graham Yost (Justified) who is developing a drama project titled L.A. Woman.  The one-hour drama, produced by Sony Pictures Television, centers on a female spy set in 1970s Los Angeles.  NBC ordered a script and Yost will write and be EP.  Previously, Yost was EP on NBC’s short-lived crime drama Raines that starred Jeff Goldblum in 2007 and the cop drama Boomtown that ran for two seasons on the network. 

Awake creator Kyle Killen received a pilot commitment from ABC on a workplace ensemble drama titled Influence about two brothers, one a bipolar genius and the other a con artist who run an agency specializing in human motivation techniques.  Killen will write and be the EP. 

ABC has a trio of comedy projects set up at ABC Studios, reports THRPioneer Town is a single-camera comedy from Peter Huyck (Frasier) about a family who moves from New York City to a small California town to simplify their lives.  Huyck will write and be EP on the project.  The second single-camera comedy is from Up All Night’s Erica Rivinoja about a Mormon family that moves to Las Vegas.  Rivinoja will write and be EP.  The third single-camera comedy is titled You’re Doing It Wrong from John Enbom (Party Down) about two young parents struggling to fit into their new community who realize their parenting skills underperform compared to the experts they are now paired with.  Enbom will serve as EP on the project. 

STARZ approved a 10-episode series, The White Queen based on Philippa Gregory’s series of three novels, The Cousins War.  The STARZ Original series, slated to premiere in 2013, will be an adaptation of Gregory’s three historical novels set during England’s Wars of the Roses  The White Queen, The Red Queen and The Kingmaker’s Daughter.  STARZ acquired all US domestic and worldwide multi-platform distribution rights to The White Queen from ALL3Media International.  Starz further holds all global rights, with the exception of TV rights in the UK, where the series will air on BBC One and some TV/home video rights in Belgium, the Netherland and Luxembourg.  Max Irons will head the cast playing King Edward IV with James Frain as Lord Warwick “The Kingmaker,” newcomer Rebecca Ferguson as Elizabeth Woodville.  The White Queen is produced by Company Pictures and will be filmed on location in Bruges, Belgium. 

TNT is working on a new reality competition series, The Hero (wt) hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who will also serve as EP with his producing partner, Dany Garcia.  TNT ordered eight episodes set to premiere in summer 2013.  The Hero watches as ten ordinary people will live together in a house where they will be tested in various challenges that will test their brains, their brawn and their morality.  Johnson will be the participant’s mentor and motivator.  Produced by Ben Silverman’s studio Electus and 5×5 Media, The Hero will additionally integrate social media into every element of the show, from pre-production and casting to on-location filming and live broadcasts.  The show will further harness Johnson’s own social media following which includes more than 10 million fans via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Another reality competition series will join VH1’s lineup in early 2013 as fashion-themed Model Employee was announced by the network.  The eight-episode series follows eight models that compete to become the face of the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino with Chrissy Teigen as host.  The winning contestant will win the opportunity to represent Mandalay Bay with a $100,000 one-year spokes-model contract.  Model Employee is produced by Studio Lambert.

Television writer/producer Chuck Lorre will stay put with Warner Bros. Television as he inked a new, exclusive multi-year overall development and production deal with the studio.  The new deal, as announced by Warner Bros. Television President Peter Roth, also includes a feature films component written, developed and/or directed by Lorre through Warner Bros. Pictures.  The four-year deal will have Lorre develop new television content involving his penning and producing comedies in addition to drama series and possible long-form projects for both broadcast networks and cable networks via his Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc. company.  Lorre will continue to serve as EP of the CBS sitcoms Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly.  All current and future TV projects from Lorre will be produced in association with either Warner Bros. Television or Warner Horizon Television with global distribution handled by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.  Warner Bros. Television and Lorre have been in their long-term business relationship since 2000.

Stand-up comedian Tone Bell joins NBC’s sitcom Whitney as a series regular playing RJ, a friend of Alex’s who could become a love interest for Lily (Zoe Lister Jones).

Amanda Schull is joining the cast of USA Network’s Suits in a recurring role playing Katrina Bennett, an assistant D.A. for the second half of season two. 

Casting Call: Even before the season finale of MasterChef airs on FOX September 10, the show announced the season four open casting calls dates.  The cross-country casting calls will begin October 6 in San Diego; followed by Minneapolis and Nashville on October 13; Chicago and Miami on October 20; Dallas and Cleveland on October 27; Los Angeles and Boston on November 3; and New York and Portland on November 10.  Details on the venues and casting call times can be found at: www.masterchefcasting.com.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC scored a win Saturday at 3.0/11 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  ABC had a clean sweep this night with the opening of the Saturday Night Football season and at 8p the network posted a 3.4/13 followed by FOX’s College Football at 0.7/3.  ABC’s Saturday Night Football ratings at 9p came in at 3.3/12 and FOX remained in second place with more College Football at 0.7/3.  At 10p, ABC finished the night at #1 at 2.9/10 and CBS slid into second place with 48 Hours Mystery encore at 0.8/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX and Univision tied for #1 Sunday with each network delivering a 1.1/4 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 7p, a three-way tie occurred between CBS’ 60 Minutes encore, NBC’s Dateline Classic repeat and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes at 0.8/3 each while the average of FOX’s rerun comedies American Dad and The Cleveland Show posted a 0.7/3 in fourth place.  CBS’ Big Brother was the clear winner at 8p with a 1.9/7, while the average of FOX’s double The Simpsons episodes and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes shared #2 at 1.1/4 apiece.  The networks flip-flopped during 9p with the average of FOX’s double Family Guy episodes and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes each posting a 1.5/5 to share #1 and coming in third place was NBC’s America’s Got Talent repeat at 0.9/3.  Then at 10p, Univision was the solo winner with Sal y Pimienta at 1.0/3 followed by NBC’s America’s Got Talent rebroadcast at 0.8/2.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective October 1, Katz Media Group is hiring Mort Greenberg as President of Katz 360, the digital sales unit of Katz Media Group.  Mort is joining from Nokia. 

Three executives were added to Universal Television, the television production unit of the NBCUniversal Television GroupGeorge Sealey joins from Mark Burnett Productions as VP/Alternative Programming and Development; Curt Northrup also joins as VP/Alternative Programming and Development from Genetic Entertainment where he was a Partner; and Fernando J. Hernandez, previously from Ryan Seacrest Productions was named to the newly-minted role as SVP/Alternative Development.  All three report to Meredith Ahr, EVP/Alternative Programming and Development, NBCUniversal. 

CNN Worldwide taps Rick Lewchuk as SVP/Creative Services where he will supervise on-air and off-channel brand and marketing creative for all CNN Worldwide business.  Rick will be based in Atlanta.

Former VP/Olympic Creative Director of Marketing for the 2012 London Olympics, Roger Guillen was named SVP/Creative Director at Oxygen Media.  In his new role, Roger will develop and lead the creative strategies for the network.  Based in New York, Roger will report to Jane Olson, SVP/Marketing and Brand Strategy.

RLTV elevated E.J. Conlin as SVP/Marketing and Communications.  E.J. heads all facets of marketing, communications, social media and advertising outreach initiatives.  She further heads the network’s brand strategy development, coordination and implementation across the country.  E.J. has been with RLTV since 2008.

Marvin Dorson was appointed as VP/On-Air Promotions for Fox Movie Channel (FMC) and FX Movie Channel (FXM).  Marvin is tasked with overseeing the direction and executive of all network on-air promotional activities as well as growing the awareness of the FXM brand among other duties.

Greg Carroll, formerly with IMGMedia/Big Fish Entertainment as VP, has founded Greg Carroll Development (GCD), a syndication company that specializes in OTO highlighting women’s issues lifestyles and social media trends.  GCD has offices in La Quinta and Santa Barbara, CA.
