NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
DreamWorks Studios and Scholastic Media have signed Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Rush Hour 2 and 3 among others) to pen the screenplay for the first movie chapter of The 39 Clues. Earlier this summer DreamWorks Studios picked up the feature film rights to Scholastic’s book series The 39 Clues, in which each book, written by different noted authors, features additional clues to solve the mystery of the Cahill family. The multi-platform adventure debuts next Tuesday, September 9, 2008, with the publishing of the first book in the series, The Maze of Bones, by author Rick Riordan, releases in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, in conjunction with the 39 Clues online game at www.the39clues.com and the release of the audiobook.
DHX Media Ltd. announces Mahalia (working title), its new family-targeted TV drama commissioned by Vision TV, has been granted broadcast rights for Canada. Produced by DHX Media’s subsidiary Halifax Film, Mahalia (6×60) revolves around Mahalia Brown, a gifted young gospel singer who lives with her family in a troubled city neighborhood as she takes off on her way to pop stardom.
Warner Bros. and producer Jerry Weintraub are currently in talks with Stephen Sommers (writer/director The Mummy movies among others) to direct the feature film adaptation of Tarzan, which he will co-write with Stuart Beattie (all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to name a few), according to Variety. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs created the character in his book Tarzan of the Apes, published in 1912.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Disney Channel hosts Camp Rock Freestyle Jam, a dance-along version of its original movie Camp Rock, on Saturday September 20, 8-10p. The Freestyle Jam also includes new interstitials featuring two of the stars from the movie, Alyson Stoner (Caitlyn) and Roshon Fegan (Sander) who will offer a breakdown of the dance moves from two numbers in the movie. Dance step illustrations will be downloadable at www.disneychannel.com/camprock from September 12. Leading into the Freestyle Jam, the network will run Rockin’ Saturday (12n-8p), a marathon of music-themed episodes of the network’s shows. Camp Rock premiered on Disney Channel US on June 20, and begins debuting later this month in India, Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe, as well as in the UK with a special London premiere and concert featuring Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato.
Freestyle Releasing and Fathom Studios will release the CGI animated fantasy/action/adventure movie Delgo, on December 12, 2008. The movie, which is rated PG, revolves around a teenager’s endeavor to bring two warring nations together. The movie’s voice-over cast is a veritable who’s who including Anne Bancroft (who passed away in 2005), Freddie Prinze, Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Val Kilmer, Chris Kattan, Malcolm McDowell, Lou Gossett, Jr., Eric Idle, Michael Clarke Duncan, Burt Reynolds among others. The movie’s website offers lots of information www.delgo.com/flash_site.html.
Dive Olly Dive!, the preschool 3D CGI animated series from Taffy Entertainment, expands to five days a week (Monday-Friday, 10:30a) on PBS Kids Sprout during the Sunny Side Up Show beginning this week. The series previously ran on Saturdays and Sundays. Created by Andrew and Ian Ross, the series is a co-production of Mike Young Productions Ltd, Flying Bark Productions, KI.KA, ARD, Telegael and GDC, with support from the Media Plus Program of the European Community.
As Teen Kids News (www.teenkidsnews.com) starts its sixth season on 200 TV stations, the series has also been renewed on American Forces Network. Hosted by kids, the half-hour weekly series is available to 91% of US households, with a special ‘in the classroom’ feed seen weekly by 5 million kids.
MARKETING/LICENSING
FitzRoy Media inks a development deal with cartoonist Peter Gallagher for Heathcliff. Gallagher writes and draws the Heathcliff comic strip created by his uncle, George Gately in 1973. Under the deal FitzRoy will develop animated feature films, direct to DVD titles and location-based entertainment projects as well as growing the licensing and merchandising opportunities for the street-smart mischievous orange and black cat.
Produce for Kids, an organization that promotes the benefits of healthy eating and kid causes and PBS Kids, are teaming for a second year to raise awareness in kids, parents (www.pbsparents.org) and teachers (www.pbsteachers.org) of the importance of fresh fruit and vegetables in a healthy diet. The partnership supports PBS Kids’ long-term educational kid’s health initiative, Eat Smart for a Great Start. Also continuing under the deal are in-store promotions and PBS member station’s local community events, as well as monetary donations for every fresh produce item purchased from September 4 through October 31, 2008. Funds from the promotion will go to support PBS’ effort to provide educational content, resources and outreach materials for families and educators that support healthy lifestyle choices for kids.
