Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Tonight’s Premiere:
truTV: Speeders at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
Animal Planet: Into the Pride at 8p
Discovery Channel: American Loggers at 9p

ABC News’ Charles Gibson announced yesterday he will retire as anchor from World News at the end of this year.  Additionally he will retire from full-time work at ABC News. Beginning in January 2010, Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer will assume the anchor duties at World News. In an email to World News staff announcing his decision Gibson said: “It has not been an easy decision to make. This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul.” Gibson has anchored World News since May 2006 following the death of anchor Peter Jennings and the injury in Iraq of co-anchor Bob Woodruff.

ABC News President David Westin released this statement about Gibson’s successor: “Diane Sawyer is the right person to succeed Charlie and build on what he has accomplished. She has an outstanding and varied career in television journalism, beginning with her role as a State Department correspondent and continuing at 60 Minutes, Primetime Live, and most recently Good Morning America.”

Real estate may still be a volatile industry in the US, yet Bravo is ready to debut a third season of Million Dollar Listing on October 12 at 11p. The docu-series follows three experienced agents working in the Los Angeles area who struggle to close deals in this economic downturn. World of Wonder produces the series for Bravo.

Sundance Channel introduces a third edition of its multi-platform short film series titled Green P*rn* 3 from actress Isabella Rossellini. The series documents the reproductive habits of sea animals depicted in a way that is scientifically accurate via a combination of real world and cartoon. Rossellini is featured in each film, talking directly to camera about the specific creature and using animation, paper cut-outs and other methods to explain its mating ritual. The film series will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival September 11 then will debut online at by September 14 followed by the on-air premiere September 21 at 8p. Then on September 22, HarperStudio is releasing Green P*rn*: A Book and Short Films by Isabella Rossellini available in bookstores nationwide.  (Sorry for the “*”s … without them, you wouldn’t get this email today!)

truTV’s second season premiere of Rehab: Party at the Hard Rock Hotel Tuesday at 10p delivered 837,000 A18-49 and more than 1.3 million total viewers.

WPIX/New York is planning some sweet surprises for New Yorkers on September 8 tied in with the launch of The CW’s Melrose Place. WPIX is teaming with a mobile cupcake truck in Manhattan to create a special Melrose Place cupcake called S’more Drama. The network is purchasing 1,100 of these cupcakes (being channel 11) which will be distributed for free in the afternoon by 11 male models from the agency Flaunt. In addition, the 11 guys will be escorted around NYC in a stretch Mini Cooper limo wrapped with show graphics. Later that evening, the male models will be at Penn Station handing out Melrose Place/PIX items to commuters.

Bilingual cable network mun2 targeting 18-34 Latinos acquired the Latin American series Esta Sociedad (This Society). The series makes its US television premiere on mun2 September 10 at 10p. Episodes will air each Thursday at 10p and repeat Tuesdays at 8p. The series centers on two families living in Lima, Peru and tackles issues facing young adults such as addiction, peer pressure and sexuality. Timeline Producciones produced the series in Lima.

WE tv premieres the CBS series Ghost Whisperer headlined by Jennifer Love Hewitt in off-net syndication September 7 at 7p. Episodes from the first four seasons will air each weeknight at 7p.

Comedienne Megan Mullally will join the cast of the original half-hour comedy series Party Down airing on Starz. Mullally plays Lydia Dunfree, a middle-aged divorced mom of a teenage daughter who moves to Hollywood from a small town and joins the Party Down catering crew. Production begins on season two this month in Los Angeles.

Katherine Heigl is taking a five-episode leave of absence from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy to star in the romantic comedy feature film Life as We Know It. Heigl will be gone from the show starting this month and won’t appear until approximately November. At the same time, co-star Ellen Pompeo will also be off the show for her maternity leave.

British actress Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) landed a co-starring role in the HBO fantasy pilot called Game of Thrones, per THR. The project is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series depicting a battle among seven kingdoms and two ruling families who vie for control of the Iron Throne. Headey will portray Queen Cersei of House Lannister and wife of King Robert (Mark Addy) and sister to twin brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and younger brother Tyrion (Peter Dinkladge).

Popular ITV British series Prime Suspect is heading to NBC. Hank Steinberg, creator of Without a Trace, will adapt the UK format which received a pilot commitment from the network and will be developed into a two-hour presentation. The project will be produced by ITV Studios and Universal Media Studios. The original Prime Suspect was created by Lynda La Plante and starred Helen Mirren as tough detective chief inspector, Jane Tennison who navigates a difficult career in a male-dominated profession. ITV’s Prime Suspect has won more than 20 international awards including Emmys for outstanding miniseries and best lead actress in a movie or miniseries for Mirren. This venture also represents part of a three-project agreement between NBC and ITV Studios which includes two blind pilot commitments, one scripted and the other unscripted.

Casting Call: Lion TV is casting for a third season of the eco-makeover series Wa$ted airing on Planet Green. The production company seeks families and businesses located in the NYC Tri-State area that have differing viewpoints on “going green” and ones with out-of-control wasting habits. The series offers lifestyle tips, reports on gadgets and products and advice on how to make-over a household or company to save money. Interested applicants can send an email to

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  YouTube has slowly been adding professional themed content, and has carved a path to the movie studios by offering its leader board as an effective promotional tool for new releases. The video sharing giant would like to take the relationship a step further and is now in talks to begin offering rentals of Hollywood movies, according to the WSJ. YouTube already offers some older titles on an ad supported basis, but the rental service would include streaming of new releases for a change, in the neighborhood of the $3.99 that iTunes currently charges for feature rentals. Studios involved in the talks including Lionsgate, Sony and Warner Bros. are asking for $3/title minimum fees in case YouTube wants to offer pricing specials or other promotions.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The Twilight Saga is coming to Habbo, the tween/teen-targeted virtual world, under a newly bitten deal between Summit Entertainment and Finland-based Sulake Corp‘s Habbo.  To coincide with the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second movie in the series, on November 20, Habbo will launch a New Moon-themed virtual space on Habbo’s 31 communities worldwide.  Habbo will offer virtual goods based on the movies, which fans can use to decorate their personal space.  Habbo users will also be able to interact with other teen Twilight fans and visit movie-branded rooms and take part in movie related activities and polls.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.
