Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Twilight Saga is coming to Habbo, the tween/teen-targeted virtual world, under a newly bitten deal between Summit Entertainment and Finland-based Sulake Corp‘s Habbo.  To coincide with the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second movie in the series, on November 20, Habbo will launch a New Moon-themed virtual space on Habbo’s 31 communities worldwide.  Habbo will offer virtual goods based on the movies, which fans can use to decorate their personal space.  Habbo users will also be able to interact with other teen Twilight fans and visit movie-branded rooms and take part in movie related activities and polls.

Hola Club Penguin.  Club Penguin and Disney Online launch the Spanish version of Club Penguin virtual world at www.clubpenguin.com/es .  The new version of the Club Penguin is supported by native Spanish-speaking staffers that understand the nuances of both the language and various cultural references.  In addition to Spanish, there are English, Portuguese and French language versions of the site, which launched in 2005, November 2008 and March 2009 respectively.

Coming to a computer screen near you.  YouTube could soon be offering consumers the option to rent and stream full length feature film for about $3.99, according to the WSJ.  YouTube, which is owned by Google, is reportedly in discussions with Lionsgate Entertainment, Sony and Warner Bros. about offering their newer movie titles, including in some cases day and date with the DVD releases.  No word on if older movies and TV series will be included in these deals.  Consumers can already screen some movies on YouTube for free with advertising, which YouTube will continue to offer.  Within the last year Netflix has also made some movies available for rent and download viewing on computers and/or TVs.

MORE KIDS STUFF

This week marks the launch of the short-form preschool series Las aventuras de eebee y Thalia, on US Spanish broadcast network V-me weekdays at 1:15p.  Online V-me is offering series related parenting tips and activities in Spanish at V- meTV.com/eebee.  The show airs during the network’s preschool block and is the lead-in to the parenting series, Los Ninos en su Casa.  Las aventuras de eebee was created by the Every Baby Company.

Astral Media’s Family Channel is set to premiere the live-action comedy series Overruled! on Sunday, September 13 with two back-to-back episodes at 6:25p.  Produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with Family Channel, Overruled! will air regularly on Saturdays and Sundays at 6:26p.  Overruled will also be available via Family OnDemand from Tuesday, September 8 and the series can be sampled now through September 7 at Family.ca ( www.family.ca ).

Spain’s Imira Entertainment signs a deal with Disney Channel Spain for four seasons of Hit Entertainment‘s preschool series Thomas & Friends (106×10).  Disney Channel Spain will air the series on its Playhouse channel.  Imira Entertainment handles the rights to Hit Entertainment’s TV catalog in Spain and Portugal.

Xilam will showcase the new animated family comedy The Daltons (78×7) at Mipcom next month. Based on the Dalton brothers, who are featured in the comic books by Morris and Goscinny, the series follows the not so bright group and the myriad ways they try to escape prison … and mess up.  Currently in production, The Daltons has already been acquired by French broadcasters France 3 and Canal+ for air in fall 2010.  Xilam, which will be at the market with the first three episodes The Daltons, holds the worldwide distribution rights to the series, with distributor JC Media handling sales in the UK, Ireland and South Africa.  Xilam’s other Mipcom offerings include Rintindumb (75×1.5), Oggy and the Cockroaches (200 episodes or 65×30), the animated sitcom MrBaby (48×4), and Rahan (26×26).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Discovery Communications inks new licensees for Discovery Kids with Master Pieces Puzzle Company and video game publisher 505 Games.  Big Tent Entertainment brokered the new pacts on behalf of Discovery.  Master Pieces Puzzle will create a new line Discovery Kids puzzles (cardboard and wood, 3D, glow and multi-layered puzzles) and craft activities, which will be available in the US and Canada from spring 2010.  505 Games will launch the sixth video game, Spider Quest, in their Discovery Kids line available for Nintendo DS this fall

MGM partners with Claire’s Stores to offer a line of Fame products and promotions based on the upcoming release of the new Fame movie, from MGM, United Artists and Lakeshore Entertainment, on September 25, 2009.  Claire’s will offer 80s style Fame accessories including leg warmers, hats, handbags, scarves, gloves, wristbands, hair accessories, t-shirts and cosmetics as well as an exclusive line of Fame jewelry.  Customers that purchase Fame merchandise at Claire’s will receive a free download of select songs from the movie (while supplies last) from September 10.  Additionally, MGM and Claire’s will launch a Fashion Of Fame sweepstakes that will run September 4-25  more info about the sweepstakes and prizing can be found at www.claires.com or www.generationfame.com .

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Licensing industry veteran Jonathan Breiter joins Public Group LLC in NYC as Principal, Head of Licensing and Strategic Partnerships.  He will represent manufacturers, intellectual property holders and industrial designers.  Breiter was previously toiled for Betesh Group, Hasbro and Netto.
