Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 28, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Set to begin shooting next spring is a new family movie executive produced by Garry Marshall and Hector Elizondo.  The movie is about a 15-yr-old boy who qualifies for a $10 million poker tournament in Las Vegas.  The kid convinces his mom to play in his place and, through a series events, he is eventually allowed to play and finds himself sitting at a poker table with the best of the best.  Randy Feldman and Brad Neufeld will produce from their script in association with poker impresarios Mark and Lisa Tenner.

French animation company Xilam will attend Mipcom with its several animated properties:

  • The new animated short-form comedy series, Rintindumb (75 x 90 seconds) referred to as the dumbest dog in the west.  Rintindumb is based on the side-kick character from Lucky Luke comics, which was illustrated by Belgian artist Morris and penned by Rene Goscinny, best known for his comic Asterix.  Rintindumb premiered this month on France 3 as interstitial programming.
  • Rahan, Son of the Dark Age (26 x 30′), a mixed 2D/3D animated pre-historic comedy/fantasy/adventure series for K6-11.  The series is based on the French comic from the 1960s, created by Roger Lecureux.  Co-produced by Xilam and Castelrosso Films (Italy), the series has already been picked up by France 3 and RAI.
  • Shuriken School (26 x 30′), the 2D digi animated action/comedy series, produced by Xilam with co-producer Zinkia Entertainment (Spain).  Shuriken School already airs in the Nickelodeon in the US and has been acquired by broadcasters including: CiTV (UK); Jetix Europe, France 3; Mediaset Italy; Disney Asia and Nickelodeon Australia.

Cookie Jar Entertainment is Mipcom-bound with its President and COO, Toper Taylor helping to get things underway as one of the Mipcom Jr. keynote speakers on Sunday, October 8.  Among the slate of many programs that Cookie Jar will showcase at the market are:

  • Johnny Test (26 x 30′) – Created by Scott Fellows, the series follows the adventures of an 11-yr-old boy, his genetically engineered dog and his 13 yr-old twin-teen-prodigy-nuclear-scientist-inventor sisters, who use Johnny as their guinea pig for their experiments. The series airs in the US on Kids’ WB! and is in production on a second season.  Recent broadcast sales include: Teletoon (Canada); Daro Film Distribution (South Africa, Middle East); MTVN Europe for Nickelodeon.
  • Spider Riders – the first show under Cookie Jar’s action/adventure banner Coliseum.  The series comes from Japanese Director Koichi Mashimo and is based on the Cookie Jar’s book Spider Riders – Shards of the Oracle written by Tedd Anasti and Patsy Cameron-Anasti, and published by Newmarket Press.  Daro Film Distribution recently inked a distribution sales deal for broadcast in South Africa and Middle East.  Earlier deals include Teletoon (Canada), TV Tokyo (Japan), Kids WB! (US).  Spider Riders is co-produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment and Japanese advertising agency Yomiko.

Heading to Mipcom is Animation Collective, the NYC-based animation studio, with a slate of series and short form programming.
Series:

  • Ellen’s Acres (52 x 11′) – a preschool series about 5-year-old Ellen, her feather duster, and her adventures around a hotel (owned by her parents).  The series is currently in production for Cartoon Network US and UK  slated for launch in early 2007.
  • HTDT (26 x 22′) – an anime-inspired action-comedy series for K6-11 now in production for Cartoon Network US.  When all the king’s horses and men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again, they called Dr. Kizami Miyazaki, who achieved the task using some bio-nuclear physics.
  • Kappa Mikey (52 x 22′) – A fish-out-of-water story, about an American Actor Mikey Simon, who joins the cast of the once highly rated anime show in Japan.  MTV Networks International represents the worldwide terrestrial broadcast rights.

Short-format series:

  • Thumb Wrestling Federation – a live-action/comedy series about a fictitious sports league.  MTV Networks International represents the worldwide terrestrial broadcast rights.  Currently airs on Nicktoons Network.
  • Leader Dog (13 x 2′) – The Zmed’s came to Earth in search of our leader, instead they got a mangy junkyard dog on the run from the pound.  The series airs on Nicktoons Network.
  • Tortellini Western (13 x 2′) – an operatic comedy about one family’s adventures in a new world. Series airs on Nicktoons Network.

Additional short form programming includes:

  • Monster in My Closet (11 min) – a Halloween animated special; Science Freaks (6 x 4′)  cute mutant monsters go on adventures with each including a science experiment kids can do at home; Eggels (6 x 4′) a look at the funny world of the tiny Smurf-like creatures known as the Eggels; Space Puppies (13 x 3.5′)  action/comedy series about four dogs traveling through the outer reaches of the universe.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will premiere the new animated series Class of 3000, created/executive produced by André “3000” Benjamin, aka a member of the band OutKast, and Tom Lynch, on Friday, November 3, at 8p.  Beginning at 7p and leading into the show’s premiere that night, the network will air a special music event from the Fox Theater in Atlanta, which promises special guest performances.  Class of 3000 revolves around a music star who gives up everything to teach a group of gifted music students in Atlanta.  In addition lending his voice to the lead characters, Sunny Bridges, each episode will include an animated music video, featuring a new song from Benjamin, who also wrote and performs that show’s theme song.  Cartoon Network also plans to promote the series debut with a mockumentary titled, Sunny Bridges: From Bankhead to Buckhead, which will air October 27, at 7p.  Class of 3000 is produced by Cartoon Network in conjunction with Tom Lynch Co. and Andre Benjamin’s company, Moxie

Nickelodeon has granted Barcelona-based Icon Animation the distribution rights to its animated preschool series Dora the Explorer in Spain.  The deal supports Icon’s efforts to grow its third party distribution business.  Icon also represents kids/family TV/film properties films in Spain and recently signed a deal with Spanish producer Irusoin to distribute its upcoming animated film Christophe Coolumbus worldwide.

Marvel Entertainment has appointed Cryptic Studios as the developer of Marvel Universe Online, its massively multiplayer online (MMO) video game, based on Marvel’s Super Heroes, exclusive to Xbox 360 and Windows Vista and to be published by Microsoft Game Studios.

Plaza Sesamo‘s 10th season will kick off with a focus on healthy habits and Latin America’s diversity. The new season debuted on September 25 on Televisa, and will premiere November 20 on Discovery Kids. Sixty-five new episodes feature celebrities like singer Aleks Syntek, news commentators Adela Micha and Loret de Mola, among others, encouraging children and their families to lead a safe and balanced lifestyle through exercise and healthy eating habits. The inclusion of health content on Plaza Sesamo is part of “Healthy Habits for Life” or “Habitos Saludables para Toda La Vida,” nonprofit educational organization Sesame Workshop’s multi-media initiative to encourage young children and their caregivers to learn simple, fun ways to take care of their bodies.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Performance Designed Products, manufacturer of Pelican brand accessories, has teamed with Hasbro Properties Group to develop a new line of video game accessories based on Hasbro’s Nerf brand.  This fall marks the debut of the Nerf Wireless Controller from Pelican, which will be made from soft, durable foam on the outside, and feature Smart Play technology.  They say the controller is well padded enough to withstand all sorts of throwing, twisting, spiking and then some  but please don’t tell my kids that!  The Nerf Wireless line will launch initially with the controller for PlayStation 2 and will cost about $29.99, with other platforms to follow.

Cookie Jar Entertainment’s preschool property, The Doodlebops, kicks-off an 80+ city live tour across the US on September 30 at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

Tonner Doll Company, Inc. has teamed with the New York City Ballet for the New York City Ballet Collection, a new line of ballerina dolls.  Featuring outfits based on the Karinska costume designs for New York City Ballet’s production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, each doll has articulated joints, including a specially sculpted, ‘en pointe’ foot; additional outfits and accessories will follow.  There are both 16” tall adult dolls and a 12” doll representing the ballet’s star Marie, a young girl.  The New York City Ballet Collection will be sold at doll and toy specialty stores nationwide, including Fao Schwarz beginning November, 2006, with the initial line featuring characters including The Sugar Plum Fairy and Marie ($109.99-$149.99).  The dolls will also be available at the New York City Ballet Gift Shop during performances.  Finally, Tonner will serve as a sponsor for the New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet’s annual Nutcracker Family Benefit on December 9, 2006.
