~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

The CW has ordered a new midseason reality docu-series called Fly Girls. The eight 30m episodes will follow a group of female flight attendants working for new airline company Virgin America. The five attractive flight attendants, who share a home in Los Angeles, will jet-set from such destinations as Las Vegas, South Beach and New York City as they juggle demanding jobs and their personal lives. Collins Avenue Productions produces the series with executive producers Jeff Collins and Colin Nash along with co-executive producers Larry Bond and Porter Gale.

FOX handed a presentation order to J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television for a 30m project, described early-on as a medical-themed comedy. The untitled show will have Mike Markowitz (CBS’ Becker) writing the script and executive produce; Abrams and Bad Robot’s Bryan Burk will also executive produce. FOX’s drama Fringe is also produced by Bad Robot Productions and WBTV.

Showtime and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks TV are prepping for a new scripted series about putting on a Broadway musical. The untitled project, still in an early development phase, will document what it takes to mount an original show on Broadway from the creative concept through opening night. Following the TV show, the two companies then want to open the show for real on Broadway. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are both experienced with adapting musicals to film and TV, are in talks to be involved along with songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. DreamWorks TV heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank are also participating with the project alongside Spielberg.

NBC will likely approve a two-hour movie/backdoor pilot titled The Mountain from Canadian-based Muse Entertainment, cites THR. Production on The Mountain begins October 21 in Montreal and Quebec about a single mom of three who inherits property from a deceased uncle. While visiting the place, the family discovers it is chock full of history. Michael Prupas and Jeff Grant are executive producing; Joel Rice and Irene Litensky will produce while Doug Barr is set to direct. Recently Muse Entertainment produced two action/adventure miniseries The Last Templar and Impact which aired earlier this year on NBC and ABC respectively in addition to the upcoming miniseries Ben-Hur for ABC.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  You know you’ve got a great show on your hands when people take the time to program it into their Tivos. In fact Emmy Award winning programs tend to be the most time shifted shows on the dial, according to Tivo‘s Stop||Watch ratings service. Audience viewing data depicted heavy levels of season-long timeshifted viewing for nearly all of the 2009 Emmy Award winning programs, compared with other nominated shows within their respective genres. Don’t tell advertisers, but Emmy winners also registered the lowest levels of commercial retention. For example, AMC’s Mad Men saw 83% of its timeshifted audience fast-forward through its commercials, compared to a genre benchmark of 73%. Comedy Central’s South Park showed similar fast-forwarding of 66%, compared to genre average of 55%.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Finn Arnesen SVP and GM Original Series and International Development for Turner Broadcasting, which includes Cartoon Network, is set to leave the company.  Arnesen, who has been with Turner for 15+ years, will attend Mipcom for the company before his departure.  Arnesen has not announced his future plans other than to rest and spend more time with his kids – though the rumor mill is already churning that he could be a candidate to head BBC Children’s, currently held by Richard Deverell who exits the position in November to become COO, BBC North.  Likewise, Turner has not unveiled plans to replace Arnesen.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.
