Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/24/09
Good morning, it’s Thursday, September 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
You know you’ve got a great show on your hands when people take the time to program it into their Tivos. In fact Emmy Award winning programs tend to be the most time shifted shows on the dial, according to Tivo‘s Stop||Watch ratings service. Audience viewing data depicted heavy levels of season-long timeshifted viewing for nearly all of the 2009 Emmy Award winning programs, compared with other nominated shows within their respective genres. Don’t tell advertisers, but Emmy winners also registered the lowest levels of commercial retention. For example, AMC’s Mad Men saw 83% of its timeshifted audience fast-forward through its commercials, compared to a genre benchmark of 73%. Comedy Central’s South Park showed similar fast-forwarding of 66%, compared to genre average of 55%.

The case for free content vs. paid content on mobile platforms strengthens considerable if we begin to see real ad revenue generated on the platform. With the proliferation of affordable smartphones continuing to ramp up, mobile ad spending (including messaging-based formats) will reach $416 million in 2009 and increase to a stellar $1.56 billion by 2013, according to eMarketer. Much of the growth is expected to come from search and display ads, which in 2008 only contributed 18% and 22% of overall mobile ad spending in the U.S., respectively.

As the mythical Apple tablet continues to get all the press, Microsoft seems to be close to releasing its own portable tablet device. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE WALTER KAITZ FOUNDATION
Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. It’s not television, it’s digital media. HBO Imagine is a new Flash-based interactive storytelling site developed with BBDO New York and The Barbarian Group, delivering video content in a three-dimensional cube that reveals scenes from 4 distinct points of view. Click on the play button to start the “Affair” video about a husband who comes home before he’s expected. Click the right or left hand arrow buttons to rotate the cube to get the full visual story of what’s going on. (Hitchcock, who constantly explored the voyeuristic relationship between the viewer and the image, would have loved this.) The scene is just one of 41 pieces of content including short and long-form video, audio files, news stories, letters and images users can keep track of via an interconnected grid. (Click on “zoom out” to view connected bits or click on the “chart your progress” logo to see the big picture.) HBO Imagine is being presented across multiple platforms, including outdoor installations of “The Cube” to introduce the format to the residents of New York (on display in the meatpacking district from last week), Philadelphia (Oct. 1-3) and Washington D.C. (Oct. 8-10.) It’s a wonderful out-of-the-box way to utilize a medium that is too often confined to linear storytelling.
