US total measured advertising spending declined by -14.3% during the first six months of 2009 compared to the same period a year ago, according to a new report released by TNS Media Intelligence. Total advertising expenditures during the first half of 2009 equaled $60.87 million. Total television account for a -10% decline. Under the television umbrella, Network TV’s ad spending fell by -5.5%; Cable TV -3.6%; Spot TV (not including Hispanic stations) -27.1%; National Syndication -0.7%; and Spanish-Language TV -12.7%. Overall radio media (including local radio, national spot radio and network radio) plummeted by -24.6% while the sole increase was led by internet (display ads only) at +6.5%. BIO Channel combines chilling and touching tales of ghosts with celebrities in its new series Celebrity Ghost Stories, premiering October 3 at 10p. Each of the nine one-hour episodes recounts celebrities’ real-life encounters with the paranormal, using cinematic recreations and first-person narratives. Featured celebrities include David Carradine, Joan Rivers, Scott Baio, Teri Polo, Carrie Fisher, Lili Taylor among others. Jarrett Creative produces the series for BIO Channel. National Geographic Channel’s canine-focused series Dog Whisperer opens its sixth season on October 9 at 9p with a special episode showing viewers how to raise a puppy from the beginning. The first episode, Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan: How to Raise the Perfect Dog follows Millan as he adopts four puppies and chronicles their growth and development over the first eight months. This episode also serves as a documentary companion to Millan’s fourth book, How to Raise The Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond from Harmony Books, a division of Random House, Inc. releasing on October 6. The new sixth season of Dog Whisperer has a total of 30 new episodes featuring Millan working with celebrities and their pooches in addition to traveling to Australia and Texas. GSN (Game Show Network) is bringing back new seasons of two original game show series next month:
BBC America introduces US viewers to retail expert Mary Portas in the series Mary Queen of Shops, opening October 14 at 9p. Each weekly episode follows Portas as she visits small independent shop owners around the UK giving them straight talk and guidance on how to improve and ultimately save their retail businesses. Optomen Television, behind such series as Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Gordon Ramsay’s F Word produces the series. Science Channel’s first-ever trivia series Head Games makes its debut on October 17 at 9p. The series, produced by One Hoe and from executive producers Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Leonardis and Dana Calderwood, is hosted by Greg Proops and will test contestants’ intelligence about unusual information from the natural and scientific world. Starting tonight, Tennis Channel is making its Court Report news segments a nightly fixture of its primetime programming. The one-minute hourly updates will air Thursdays through Mondays at the top of the 7p, 8p, 9p and 10p hours. The 10p segment will repeat each hour through the night and into the following morning until noon. Eight more Court Report updates will air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the same four hourly increments. The one-minute reports will contain a 30-second commercial adjacency and a five-second network ID before returning to regular programming. Originally, these Court Report segments were a special feature during Tennis Channel’s major tournament coverage. Court Report segments will be anchored by Cari Champion, Arlene Santana and Angela Sun and will also be available via the network’s website at www.tennischannel.com on the video page. Veteran character actor, Henry Gibson, 73, died Monday evening at his home in Malibu, after a brief illness. Gibson was best known as the flower-holding poet on the NBC slap-stick comedy series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and was one of the original members of the cast. He appeared in several films, including Robert Altman’s Nashville and as the Illinois Nazi in The Blues Brothers. More recently, Gibson played a recurring role on Boston Legal as the grumpy Judge Clark Brown. Gibson is survived by three sons, three sisters and two grandchildren. MTV approved a new scripted comedy series called Warren the Ape featuring celebrity appearances combined with puppetry. The plot of the show is set within a fictional reality show about a D-list celebrity puppet, Warren “The Ape” Demontague who wants to transform himself and become popular again in Hollywood. MTV will launch the new series in 2010. Spencer Chinoy, Sean Baker and Dan Milano are executive producers and creators of the show; George Plamondon and Betsy Schechter are executive producers for Picture Shack Entertainment and Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri are executive producers for Freestyle. E! Entertainment Television just wrapped principal photography on a new international series, Perfect Catch set in the Greek Isles and hosted by Carmen Electra. This is a weekly 60m reality/competition series where eight contestants from around the globe convene in the Greek Isles to search for the person who represents their perfect match. Host Electra along with celebrity and expert judges will decide which “catch” is the most perfect and the winning contestant will win $50,000 and their perfect companion will get a magazine photo shoot. Perfect Catch, produced by London-based Twofour Broadcast for E! International Network/Comcast International Media Group is set to air on E! International Network around the world and following the international premiere will air in the US on E! Entertainment Television. Producer/director/choreographer, Adam Shankman joins as the third judge on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance starting October 27. Previously, Shankman was a guest judge during the new season’s audition episodes. ABC okayed development on a new comedy called Freshmen from Arianna Huffington and comedy writer Greg Malins (Friends). The project is set in the world of politics, specifically Washington, D.C. about three newly elected members of Congress (two men and one woman) who also end up sharing a D.C. apartment together. Twentieth Century Fox Television is set to produce the multi-camera 30m project where Malins also has an overall agreement. Malins and Huffington will executive produce along with Roy Sekoff, the founding editor of the Huffington Post. Author Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter, Mariel Hemingway, secured the film and TV rights to her late grandfather’s memoir, A Moveable Feast, reports Variety. Mariel Hemingway is partnering with John Goldstone to produce the project and they will begin shopping it immediately. Ron Howard is back working on another comedy concept for FOX, reports THR. The workplace multi-camera project is set inside a district office of the Internal Revenue Service. FOX gave it a put pilot commitment and a large penalty, estimated in the range of $650,000. Twentieth Television will produce along with Imagine and Brent Forrester, writer/director of NBC’s The Office will pen the project. Forrester and Howard will executive produce with Imagine’s Brian Glazer and David Nevins. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: In the next logical step of the TV Everywhere revolution, Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis announced plans to offer subscribers the option to watch their favorite shows on their mobile phones using the MSO-backed 4G Clearwire WiMax service. While TV has been available for sometime via mobile devices through services such as Flo TV, subscribers have been reluctant to pay extra for the service; Comcast plans to offer mobile TV as a free add on as it is planning to do with the On Demand Online service. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia conference, Angelakis also spoke of expanding Comcast’s On Demand video service to mobile devices, according to Information Week. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CBS Studios International named Reed Manville to the newly created position as EVP/International Channels where he will provide oversight of CBS’ international channel strategy.
