Cyn opsis: Kids!

09/14/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The cast of The Tale of Despereaux, the Universal upcoming CG animated feature film, is nothing to despair about at all; in fact it is a pretty amazing group of folks.  Based on the book of the same name by noted author Kate DiCamillo, the voice cast for The Tale of Despereaux includes: Robbie Coltrane; Ciaran Hinds; Dustin Hoffman; Kevin Kline; Christopher Lloyd; Justin Long; William H. Macy; Stanly Tucci; Tracey Ullman; and Sigourney Weaver.  The story is adapted by Gary Ross with Framestore CFC creating the animation for the movie.

Once The Grinch, Jim Carey is returning to Who-ville, but this time as the voice of Horton the Elephant in upcoming Fox Animation Blue Sky Studios’ CG animated movie version of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who.  The voice cast for Horton will also feature Steve Carrell as the mayor of Who-ville.  Horton is being directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino from a script adapted by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.  The movie is slated for release in spring 2008.

The Pingu Show, a new longer format TV series, based the Hit Entertainment Pingu brand, is currently in production at Hit’s Hot Animation Studios.  The Pingu Show will feature a narrator, penguin facts and interstitials segments.  Previously Pingu was produced as 12-minute stories.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Marathon is set to launch Planet Junior, its new production and distribution division, next month at Mipcom.  Planet Junior will house all Marathon’s existing and future, original and acquired kid/teen targeted programming library.  New Marathon produced formats and series as well as production partners are imminent. Marathon International will be responsible for sales for the new label.

Turning my ring around*: Qubo, the new multi-platform TV network for K4-8, launches as a programming block on i tomorrow September 15, 2006, 3-6p.  Qubo is the result of the partnership of NBC Universal, Scholastic, Corus Entertainment and Classic Media/Big Idea, Ion Media Networks (f/k/a Paxson Communications), NBC and Telemundo.
*This is what my Mom does when she wants to remember something.

Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by featuring original programming across all three of its channels.  Specifically looking at the kids portion of the programming effort: Discovery Kids en Espanol will go back in time to take a look at historic Latin American heroes with a series of short, original programs, which highlight four Latin American heroes that fought for freedom in their countries: General Simon Bolivar (Venezuela), Mexico’s national hero/former president Benito Juarez, Colombia’s former president, soldier and statesman Francisco de Paula Santander and Latin American writer/poet Jose Marti (Cuba).

Elsewhere Nickelodeon Networks Asia and Eastern Broadcasting Co.’s Eastern Television (ETTV) have teamed-up to launch YoYo Nick, a new 3-hr Mandarin-language, Nickelodeon-branded programming block for air in Taiwan.  When the weekday primetime block launches September 18, on kids-centric channel YoYo TV, it will include Mandarin-language versions of ChalkZone, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Nickelodeon Germany and Jetix Netherlands have acquired Portfolio Entertainment‘s tween animated series Carl2 (52×30).  The series also includes an interactive component with online gaming and character blogs. Carl Crashman is an ordinary teenager who finds himself in many adventures when he orders a clone for himself on the Internet by accident.

Fremantle International Distribution has inked program sales for several of its kid/family series:

  • Several Jamie Oliver shows will debut on Spanish terrestrial TV channel, Localia, including Jamie’s Great Italian Escape (6 x 30′) and Jamie´s School Dinners (4 x 1 hour).  Localia is a syndicated channel, which is seen in 80 of Spain’s cities.  In addition, Jamie´s Kitchen is set to bow soon on Spanish pay TV cooking channel, Canal Cocina, which currently airs his series Oliver´s Twist.
  • Falcon Beach (26 x 1hr and 1 x 2 hr pilot) and Prehistoric Park (6 x 1 hr) have both been sold to TV4 (Sweden), TV Norge (Norway), TV2 (Denmark), Channel 4 (Finland), Netherland Public Channels, Netherlands and La Sexta (Spain).  Falcon Beach has also been picked up by IBC 365 Media Group (Iceland) and SBS VT4 (Flanders) and Prehistoric Park will air on VTM (Flanders) and on RTP (Portugal).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hit Entertainment has named Golden Bear as the master toy licensee for Hit’s animated property Pingu in the UK and Ireland in a three-year pact that officially begins January 1, 2007.  Under the deal, Golden Bear will launch with a range of Pingu products including new play sets and a line of plush dolls among others, which will debut in January 2007.  Pingu turns 20 years old this year.

PorchLight Entertainment has named Tycoon Entertainment as the licensing agent for the Jay Jay The Jet Plane property throughout Mexico.  Also included as part of the agreement, Tycoon has picked up the licensing and home video rights to 90 episodes of Jay Jay The Jet Plane.  Tycoon expects to release the first two videos regionally in 1Q 2007.  The series currently airs on Discovery Kids Latin America’s pay TV channel, and debuted on the free TV channel Televisa this past July 2006.

Vooz Co. Ltd, a Korean character development company, has appointed Warner Bros. Consumer Products as the master licensee for its flash-animated Pucca brand in Brazil.  Under the deal, WBCP has the rights to license, manufacture, import, distribute, promote and sell Pucca-branded merchandise in Brazil.  The licensing program will include products in a range of categories including leisure apparel and accessories, toys and games, housewares and domestics, stationery, gifts and collectible items, among others, with Pucca products set to begin rolling out in January 2007.

More news from Who-ville, but this time from Warner Home Video, which will release of a deluxe edition of How the Grinch Stole Christmas on DVD November 21, 2006.  The DVD features a fully remastered version of story, and will also include new content and Horton Hears A Who.  The new release is part of the build up to The Grinch’s 50th birthday next year. How freaky is the visual of the Grinch with an AARP card!  Random House first published Dr. Suess’ book How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957.  The book was made into an animated TV special directed by Chuck Jones and featuring the voices of Boris Karloff as the narrator, Thurl Ravenscroft sang the theme song You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch, and I believe June Foray as Cindy Lou Who, which premiered on CBS on December 18, 1966 to an audience of upwards of 40 million viewers.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Lynn Chadwick has been upped to VP/Worldwide Sales and Distribution, Nelvana Enterprises.  Chadwick has relocated from the company’s London office to its Toronto headquarters where she will be responsible for program/content sales around the world.  All of the international sales executives will report to her.  Chadwick had been Nelvana’s VP/European Sales and Distribution.
