Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. (WBEI) reorganizes DC Comics and renaming it DC Entertainment Inc. (DCE), which will operate as a division of WBEI. As part of the restructuring, Paul Levitz will step down as President and Publisher, DC Comics. Diane Nelson has been named President, DC Entertainment, reporting to Jeff Robinov, President/Warner Bros. Pictures Group. Nelson, who had been President/Warner Premiere, will continue to oversee the franchise management of the Harry Potter property, as she has since 2000, as well as representing the studio’s interests with Potter author J.K. Rowling. Levitz, who has been with DC Comics for 30+ years, will now serve as a writer and become a contributing editor and overall consultant for DCE. Levitz has held many positions of the years at the company, including as a writer on Batman, Wonder Woman and the Superman newspaper strip. DC Comics will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2010.
Endemol unveils plans to grow its distribution operation with the integration of Endemol International and Southern Star International to create Endemol Worldwide Distribution. The new global distribution arm, which will officially launch at Mipcom next month, incorporates 20,000 hours of content across various genres including kids programming, animation, game shows, drama, entertainment, comedy and reality series. Heading Endemol Worldwide Distribution is CEO Cathy Payne, formerly CEO/Southern Star International. Reporting to Payne will be Matt Creasey, Exec. Sales Director/America, Asia, Australia/New Zealand and Veronique Verges, Exec. Sales Director/Europe, both based in the London office and leading their own teams. The new division will work out of existing Endemol distribution offices in London, Sydney and Hong Kong, with plans to open new offices this year in Paris, Madrid and Rome, followed in 2010 with new outposts in LA and Miami.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon launches its new original comedy/sci-fi series, The Troop (26×30), on Friday, September 18 at 8p with three back-to-back episodes. The mixed live-action and CG animated series follows the adventures of three high school kids who are members of a secret society that must help manage their town’s paranormal population. A companion website, TroopGrid, which exists both in the series and online, goes live on September 14. Produced by The Tom Lynch Company, The Troop will air regularly on Fridays at 8p. The series was created by writers Greg Coolidge (Employee of the Month), Chris Morgan (The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift), Max Burnett (7th Heaven, Herbie franchise) and Jay Kogen (The Simpsons, George Lopez, Malcolm in the Middle), all of who will serve as executive producers with Lynch.
Sprout will debut the new season of its nighttime programming block, The Good Night Show (nightly 6-9p), as well as the new animated series Rubbadubbers on Monday, September 21, 2009. That day Sprout will also launch its new on-air look, including new graphics and on-air promos. Additionally, SproutOnline.com will launch an updated microsite for The Good Night Show, featuring new craft activities and games form the new season. Rubbadubbers is from Hit Entertainment.
Disney Channel will premiere the one-hour special episode of The Suite Life on Deck, Lost At Sea, on Friday, October 2 at 8p. Throughout the week the network will air episodes of the series including exotic locations featured on the series beginning Monday, September 28 at 7:30p.
Canada’s YTV Network acquires 4Kids Entertainment‘s animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds (52×30) and Gogoriki (35×30) for its 2009-10 season programming lineup. The deal includes the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds, which is the ninth season of the Yu-Gi-Oh! saga.
Beyond Distribution will offer a host of new and existing programming across various genres at Mipcom this fall. Among the titles Beyond is offering for kids on its slate are:
- Kid Detectives (52×15 or 26×30) – in the live-action series kids use hands-on forensic skills to solve mysteries at home. Produced by Beyond Productions, Kid Detectives is based on the Dorling Kindersley book Crime Scene Detective.
- Numberjacks (season 2, 20×15 HD) – the CGI animated series for preschoolers is produced by Open Mind Productions.
- Milly, Molly (season 2, 26×15 or 13×30) – aimed at K4-8, the animated series is produced by Pacific & Beyond and Scrawl Studios.
- Jump! (1×85) – a documentary (not specifically targeted to kids) about the sport of competitive jump rope. The doc follows five teams around the US as they compete and push themselves physically and psychologically for the top prize. Produced by Nutshell Productions.

MARKETING/LICENSING
Butterfield Animation names Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) to serve as its licensing agent. Under the exclusive deal, DBG will begin by representing Lincoln Butterfield’s animated property N.I.T.: Neighborhood Investigation Team for development into consumer products, including categories such as toys, games and apparel. Additional projects are to be announced. N.I.T. revolves around three friends who work as a team “solving the unsolvable, achieving the unachievable and undoing the doable.” Lincoln Butterfield, which retains all rights to TV, film, internet and motion comics, and the first right of refusal on graphic novels, comics and other books, based on N.I.T.: Neighborhood Investigation Team, will showcase the property at Mipcom.
Big Tent Entertainment brings the Domo t-shirt licensing effort under one house in naming Fifth Sun as master t-shirt licensee for the property. Under the long-term deal, Fifth Sun will produce and market an initial line for Domo including screen-printed and embellished tops (e.g. tees, tanks tops, thermals, fleece) for juniors, girls, young men and boys. The line will be available in the US and Canada in January 2010. The deal furthers Big Tent’s relationship with Fifth Sun, which includes an apparel line based on the motocross brand the Crusty Demons.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Spin Master appoints Harold Chizick as its VP/Global Communications and Promotions. The move marks Chizick’s return to Spin Master, where he headed the company’s PR and promotional effort for eight years. Most recently he toiled for two years at Mega Brands as VP/Marketing.
