~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW is granting a full season order to the frosh drama Vampire Diaries, taking the series to a full 22-episode season. Since its debut in September, Vampire Diaries has delivered solid ratings and viewers for the network, averaging a 1.8 rating and 3.9 million total viewers last week. Additionally, The CW gave Melrose Place five more episodes, despite its lukewarm ratings results since its premiere.

National Geographic Society and National Geographic Channels announced a major global initiative, Great Migrations with the centerpiece being a seven-hour hi-def miniseries debuting worldwide on National Geographic Channels in late 2010. Documenting the often dangerous journeys taken annually by various animals from wildebeests and zebras to monarch butterflies and whale sharks, the series production visited every continent and traveled more than 670,000 kilometers with hundreds of hours of footage from twenty plus countries. In addition to the miniseries, Great Migrations will offer cross-platform initiatives including features in National Geographic publications; a 300+ page book Great Migrations: Incredible Stories of Animals on the Move; a children’s companion book; online content; mobile extensions and content; downloadable games and much more. National Geographic Television International is distributing Great Migrations to international broadcasters.

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) and National Geographic Channel US (NGC) will introduce a first-time global tagline “Live Curious” and branding campaign set to launch between November 15, 2009 and March 2010 in 166 countries and 34 languages. This new synergistic branding effort follows the use of a universal National Geographic Channel logo and on-air look initiated last year worldwide. NGC and NGCI are both joint ventures of Fox Cable Networks and National Geographic Ventures.

NBA Digital, a joint partnership of the NBA and Turner Sports announced the scheduling details for the 2009-2010 regular season encompassing 96 live games, studio shows, video content, news reporting and online programming. NBA TV will then open the new season October 27 at 5p with a live, two-hour studio show which then leads into TNT’s Opening Night coverage at 7p with the 60m show, NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com. Following on TNT at 730p a double header opens with the Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Los Angeles Clippers at 1030p.

GSN is featuring host/singer/entertainer Carnie Wilson in a new original reality series called Carnie Wilson: Unstapled, premiering January 14, 2010. The series will reveal Wilson’s real life as she juggles life as an entertainer and that of a wife and mother to two young girls. Wilson also hosts GSN’s series The Newlywed Game currently in its second season. World of Wonder produces Carnie Wilson: Unstapled.

Create TV, showcasing many public television lifestyle series, adds two cooking-themed series to its November schedule:

The program airs Tuesdays and Thursdays starting November 12. Co-produced by A La Carte Productions and Anomaly, presented by KQED and distributed nationally by American Public Television.
  • Lidia’s Italy – The series travels with TV chef Lidia Bastianich as she discovers her homeland’s cuisine and then offers cooking lessons in her home kitchen. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Starz signed a 10-year agreement with film producer Warren Miller Entertainment, specialist in winter sports filming, to air past and upcoming projects, reports Variety. The deal will showcase the world premiere of Warren Miller’s Children of Winter this November as well as four cross-platform premieres throughout the next ten years. Starz will also have access to the Warren Miller Entertainment library which goes back to Miller’s first ski film shot in Sun Valley, ID in the late 1940s.

This Friday, Time Warner Cable and Univision will have a major presence in New York’s Times Square to launch Lo Mejor On Demand. The event, featuring prizes and special live performances begins at 7a through 6p to celebrate the launch of the free on-demand channel offering Spanish-language programming from Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision. Lo Mejor On Demand will be available 24/7 for free to Time Warner Cable Digital customers.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

The existing first-look deal between Lionsgate and independent film and TV production company Olive Productions, established by Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci and Wren Arthur, has two pilot script orders in the works. The first project is an untitled one-hour family drama for HBO written by Stu Zicherman about a powerful politician (Tucci) who works to rebuild his life following his involvement in a major scandal. This project will be produced by Lionsgate and Olive Productions with Zicherman, Tucci, Buscemi and Arthur all involved as executive producers. The second project is a 30m animated comedy for TBS called Good and Evel. This family comedy is created by Glenn Eichler (The Colbert Report) and will utilize the voice talents of Tucci and Buscemi as twin brothers Jack Good and Bo Evel. Lionsgate, Olive Productions and The Gotham Group will produce; Eichler, Buscemi, Tucci, Arthur and Gotham’s Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will all executive produce.

ABC gave a script commitment for a new multi-camera comedy titled I’m With Stupid headlined by Judy Greer who was last seen in ABC’s short-lived sitcom Miss Guided. The project is based on the novel Stupid by Elaine Szewczyk about a Manhattan-ite who has a romantic affair with a park ranger while on safari in South Africa. After returning home, the park ranger shows up on her doorstep and she soon realizes her new roommate is not as bright as she thought. Szewczyk is penning the TV version and co-executive producing while Allan Loeb, Steven Pearl and Richard Lewis are executive producing. ABC Studios is producing the project.

NBC gave a development nod to a 30m sitcom from actor/writer Paul Rust based on his past employment at a Wal-Mart store, cites Variety. The yet-to-be-titled project will be produced by Universal Media Studios through Conan O’Brien’s Conaco banner. Rust will write and star in the project which recounts his former job at a Wal-Mart located in his hometown of LeMars, Iowa following college graduation. The setting will be a fictional big-box store and not actually Wal-Mart in Rust’s script.

(Users will be able to listen to a song only once all the way through for free.) All 4 major labels – Warner Music, Sony, EMI, and Universal Music – have licensed their catalogues for the initiative, expected to launch next week.     Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
