Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 22, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Viacom’s Nickelodeon gets turtle power with the acquisition of the worldwide rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment in a deal valued at about $60 million. Under the deal Nickelodeon takes the global intellectual property rights and merchandising rights to TMNT, and plans to develop a new CG animated TV series based on the franchise, which is currently slated to bow in 2010. At the same time, Paramount, also a division of Viacom, will release a new TMNT feature film that is also planned for 2012. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated TV series, co-produced by 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Studios, will continue to air on TheCW4Kids Saturday morning block on The CW through August 31, 2010.

Prisa, (Promotora de Informaciones), a Spain-based media company, acquires a 12% stake in the US-based V-me Media increasing to a majority position in the next 12 months. V-me Media owns the Spanish-language digital TV channel V-me, which among other genres, features preschool programming. Part of Prisa’s North American expansion initiative, the deal underlines the company’s belief in the value of the US Spanish-speaking market and provides it with an established distribution set up. The terms of the deal were not released.
“The promise of acting jobs is no longer for sale,” said Ken Howard, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) National President yesterday as SAG, Assemblyman Paul Krekorian (D-Burbank) and Deputy LA City Attorney Mark Lambert announced the passage of legislation in California aimed at protecting kid actors and their families from acting and modeling scams. With ever increasing complaints about such scams Howard continued explaining the new legislation (AB 1319, authored by Krekorian, is designed to “protect innocent, well-intentioned people from paying for goods that no person or entity can promise or deliver,” furthering SAG’s longtime commitment to helping create laws that protect kid actors including their income, education and safety and well being.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Boomerang will feature some of the best musical moments from The Flintstones first primetime series (1960-66) during its programming marathon Bedrock ‘N’ Roll on Sunday, October 25 from 8a-11p. The series frequently featured humorous and culturally relevant musical production numbers and guest stars during the show’s initial six-year run including Hoagy Carmichael, and Ann Margret as Ann-Margrock and Jimmy Darren as Jimmy Darrock among others.
Family Channel (Canada) hosts the Canadian premiere of Disney‘s animated movie Tinker Bell this Saturday, October 24 at 7p. Produced by John Lasseter, the movie features the voices of America Ferrera, Raven-Symone, Kristin Chenoweth, Mae Whitman, Lucy Liu and Anjelica Huston, and is narrated by Canadian music artist Loreena McKennitt.
Beyond Distribution completes additional sales for the animated series Milly, Molly. Canal+ (France) and YLE (Finland) pick up the 15-minute version of the second season. Canal+, which launched the series in May 2008, plans to debut the second season in early 2010, where the series is known as Mili, Melo, on its Piwi channel. Also taking season two are Discovery Kids Latin America, Discovery Familia USA and TV Ontario (Canada). Milly, Molly (52×15, 26×30) is produced by Pacific & Beyond and Scrawl Studios.
Universal Pictures International Entertainment inks a home entertainment rights pact in select markets for the new animated series Geronimo Stilton (26×22), which is co-produced by Atlantyca Entertainment and Moonscoop. Under the deal, all 26 episodes will be released on DVD in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and Benelux beginning next month with an Italian release. The Geronimo Stilton animated TV series is based on the eponymous kids books by Edizioni Piemme.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Discovery Communications signs a licensing deal with California Costume Collections to develop a line of Animal Planet branded Halloween costumes and accessories for kids and dogs in North America. The deal, put together by the Joester Loria Group for Animal Planet, features costumes and accessories for infants/toddlers 12-24 months including exotic animals (e.g. meerkats, chimps, peacocks). The dog line of costumes will also feature a range of animal costumes (e.g. Crocodiles, dinosaurs etc) and will be available at pet stores for Halloween 2010. A portion of the proceeds from the products will benefit the principal partners of R.O.A.R (Reach Out. Act. Respond), Animal Planet’s campaign that supports animal.
Sesame Workshop teams with Australia’s Qantas Airlines to offer Sesame Street as part of its in-flight programming. Qantas will feature six special Sesame Street videos (in rotation), for free, to its transpacific passengers beginning December 1, 2009 through November 20, 2010. The six Muppet-filled videos features on Qantas Airlines include: Being Green; Bedtime with Elmo; Elmo & Friends: Tale of Adventure; Abby in Wonderland; Dinosaurs; and Elmo and the Bookaneers (featuring Tina Fey).
L.A. Looks, a marketer of hair styling products, teams with Summit Entertainment and Imagi Studios to support the release of their new CG animated feature Film, Astro Boy, which opens this Friday, October 23, 2009. In addition to promotional support for the movie’s premiere this week and recent advance screenings, L.A. Looks expands its newspaper ad and coupon campaign to NY papers this weekend that will also include an Astro Boy trick-or-treat bag, which will feature step-by-step directions of how to create your own Astro Boy hairstyle using its new Power Spikes Gel. The cross-promotion between L.A. Looks and the Astro Boy continues in March 2010 when the movie will be released on DVD.
Baby Abuelita Productions, a manufacturer of Spanish-lullaby singing dolls that look like grandparents and animated DVDs focusing on Hispanic heritage, partners with Procter and Gamble (P&G) for a grocery store promotion aimed at Hispanic consumers nationwide. Shoppers who buy a designated amount of P&G products will be able to mail-in for an Abuelita Rosa and/or Pancho doll. Retailers in P&G Food Channel can run the promotion any time between November 23, 2009 and June 30, 2010.
