Cynopsis: Kids!
10/01/09
Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. And a reminder, later on this morning you will receive our annual MIPCOM & MIP JR SHOPPING GUIDE. It should arrive to you around 10:15am.
Two popular preschool properties will be made into feature films:
- Thomas & Friends will be pulling into movie theaters in spring 2011. Hit Movies, a division of Hit Entertainment, is developing its first feature film based on the preschool property Thomas & Friends. Josh Klausner (Shrek the Third, Date Night) has signed on to develop the script for the mixed live-action and CG animation movie. Thomas the Tank Engine celebrates his 65th Anniversary in 2010, which includes the debut of a new CG animated series featuring new friends and adventures.
- Also set to deliver to the big screen is Postman Pat. Classic Media inks a deal with UK-based Timeless Films to produce a feature-length 3D Postman Pat movie for release in 2011. Produced in the original stop-frame animation with added CG and 3-D effects, the movie will feature a screenplay by Kim Fuller (Spice World, High Heels, Lowlifes, The Tracey Ullman Show, Red Dwarf among many others). Timeless Films will distribute the movie in the UK and internationally. The movie comes on the heels of the new TV series Postman Pat Special Delivery Service, which launched on CBeebies in fall 2008.

Doesn’t look like Coolabi will acquire Chorion‘s crime division after all, Broadcast Now. Chorion says that Coolabi couldn’t raise the funds to complete the deal that was set in motion in April 2009. According to the report, Coolabi intended to fund the estimated $73.2 million deal with a combo of equity and debt, but the deal fell short, as Coolabi was able to raise the debt but not the equity. Chorion’s crime division includes the estates of crime writers such as Agatha Christie, Georges Simenon and Raymond Chandler among others. In addition to crime-writers, Chorion’s portfolio includes rights to kid’s properties including Mr. Men and works by Enid Blyton among others. Coolabi’s library of licensed properties also includes a range of kid-targeted properties such as Bagpuss, The Clangers Purple Robbie, Scarlett & Crimson, and Ivor the Engine among many others.
MORE KIDS STUFF
PBS Kids Go! and Boston-based CloudKid are set to launch Fizzy’s Lunch Lab (www.pbskidsgo.org/lunchlab) a new health-themed comedy web-only animated series, on November 16. The Lunch Lab will rollout over 10 months (40 weeks), with a new animated video and corresponding activities for kids/families simultaneously featured online. Aimed at younger elementary school kids, the series revolves around the adventures of Professor Fizzy and his pals as they prepare snacks and investigate the difference between good and bad food, and follow where food goes after it is chewed up and swallowed. Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Fizzy’s Lunch lab features a range of short video segments, interactive games and recipes and food facts. The website and webisodes are designed to entertainment and help bring kids and adults together to make healthy food choices, plan and make meals and snacks without making a force-fed experience. Additional resources will be featured at PBS Parents (www.pbsparents.org) and PBS Teachers (www.pbsteachers.org).
Universal Pictures and Mattel extend their worldwide DVD marketing and distribution partnership, which includes the release of multiple feature-length Barbie DVDs, through 2013. Under their new 10-picture, four-year pact marketing and distribution deal, Universal also acquires the rights to distribute all previous Barbie titles from January 1, 2010. Last month Universal and Mattel, per an earlier deal, released the eighth Barbie direct-to-DVD movie, Barbie and the Three Musketeers.
A week of new Yo Gabba Gabba! episodes will premiere Monday-Friday, October 12-16 at 1p on Nick Jr. (the channel f/k/a Noggin). The new episodes feature a range of celebrities including Andy Samberg (SNL), The Roots and MGMT as well as Biz Markie in the recurring Biz’s Beat of the Day segment, and the great singer/illustrator/composer Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO) in the recurring Mark’s Magic Pictures drawing segment, skateboarder Ray Barbee and Reeve Oliver, Lady Tigra and little Ones. The series was commissioned by Family Channel (Canada) and is distributed internationally by Shaftesbury Sales Company.
GoGolingo.com (www.gogolingo.com) is new bilingual edutainment site from LA-based Bilingo Club, designed to immerse K3-7 in games and virtual experiences to help them learn Spanish. The story-driven curriculum utilizes interactive activities that build upon a kid’s knowledge. The site also has a Tamogotchi-inspired element paring each kid with a virtual pet who accompanies them through the activities.
MARKETING/LICENSING

Submissions are due by November 3 with a panel of celebrity judges, Jill Schulz (daughter of the creator), Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Jo Frost (Supernanny), Nigel Barker (America’s Next Top Model) and Victoria Recano (Entertainment Tonight, The Insider) picking their finalists and then the voting opens up to the public to choose their favorites. Additionally, Cedar Fair Entertainment, a regional amusement park/water park/active entertainment company, expands its deal with United Media to feature the Peanuts characters to five more of its parks for summer 2010.
