Online tools include an automated symptom checker and drug interaction tool.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

GoGolingo.com is new bilingual edu-tainment site from L.A.-based Bilingo Club, Inc., designed to immerse kids aged 3-7 in games and virtual experiences to help them learn Spanish. The story-driven curriculum utilizes interactive activities that build upon a child’s knowledge. The site also has a Tamogotchi-inspired element – paring each kid with a virtual pet who accompanies them through the activities.

Visual effects house Encore Hollywood created an ambitious opening CGI scene for this week’s episode of Fox’s House, emerging viewers in the 3D world of a videogame developer. (The developer also finds himself catapulted back into the world during a hallucination later in the episode.) It took about 4 months from planning to finished product to create the 6 minute segment, according to House Visual Effects Supervisor Elan Soltes.

Internet video storage and delivery company Blackwave closed on a $7 million series C investment, bringing its total capital funding to more than $29M. This latest funding includes continued investment by Globespan Capital Partners, Flybridge Capital Partners and Sigma Partners.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Internet ad sales surpassed television ad sales for the first time during the first half of 2009 in the UK, according to new IAB/PwC research sourced by the WSJ. Internet ad sales including display, search and direct marketing, rose by 4.6% y/y to £1.75 billion ($2.78 billion) through June, capturing a market share of 23.5%. Meanwhile TV advertising fell by 16.1% during the same period to £1.64 billion.

MTV Network’s Logo is launching a new online and on air campaign with Subaru featuring a series of short videos of prominent gay and lesbian entertainers, artists and leaders discussing what “Legacy” means to them. Downelink.com will also launch a contest urging its members to submit a video, expressing what each of their legacies will be.

Call for Content: Coke is asking fans from around the world who want to be considered for a Coke commercial to visit their Facebook page and upload a video of themselves mimicking the sounds associated with the pleasure of drinking Coke. (You know, “glug, glug,” “fzzzz,” that sort of thing.) Submissions will be accepted through Oct. 15, and the commercial is slated to air next year. The Coca-Cola Facebook page was actually created last year as a labor of love by two Coke drinkers, and it has already attracting nearly 3.7 million fans.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Content delivery network Akamai unveiled a new streaming platform that can deliver HD online video in a number of formats, compatible with multiple devices including Apple’s iPhone. The newly renamed “Akamai HD Network” the company is now pitching to streaming video providers will utilize the CDN’s some 50,000 servers located in 750 cities around the world to deliver online video in Flash, Silverlight and to the iPhone. The system utilizes adaptive bitrate streaming technology designed to provide quality playback at HD bitrates. Akamai promises the new platform will support live and on-demand viewing and enable pausing and rewinding with response times of under a second.

AT&T Inc. acquired cross-platform mobile application solutions provider Plusmo, underlining the telco’s commitment to open standards mobile application development. Plusmo will become a part of AT&T Interactive, and the Plusmo mobile application development platform is expected to be used by multiple AT&T subsidiaries, including AT&T Mobility. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

RealNetworks
released a new version of its Helix Media Delivery Platform including tools to help broadcasters and network service providers to rapidly build and deploy mobile TV services to subscribers. Real says that Helix enables operators such as Sky to manage video usage on their network both on and off deck, insure the quality of video delivered to subscribers, and facilitate the testing of new business models and monetization schemes.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Younger audiences are quick to use digital platforms such as mobile phones and social networking sites to spread the word about whether or not they like a new movie and their reactions can make or break a film’s opening weekend, according to a new Stradella Road report sourced by Variety. Although many moviegoers are going online to get info on upcoming releases, TV still dominates in terms of generating awareness for films, with 73% of those surveyed saying they first heard about a movie by watching a 30-second spot. In-theater trailers were close behind with 70%, followed by word of mouth (46%) and the internet (44%).

Nielsen
is improving its multiplatform ratings system adding new sample characteristics that will enable advertisers, agencies and media folks to identify TV audiences based on their household internet connection speed, internet usage, and whether or not they play video games, per Mediapost.

Tivo
subscribers are time-shifting The Jay Leno Show much less than they did when he was on after the 11 O’clock news. After two weeks on the air, an average of 46% Tivo viewers recorded the show to view later (compared to 70% last season,) and nearly 20% of this time-shifted viewing occurred within an hour of when the show initially aired. By comparison, ABC and CBS’s 10’clock shows were time-shifted by an average of 63% and 65% of the audience, respectively.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Anticipating increased demand and the proliferation of 3D content from Hollywood, Panasonic announced that it will introduce a new 50-inch plasma TV next year capable of broadcasting in both 2D and 3D. Viewers would need to wear high-precision “active shutter” glasses to see images in three dimensions. Panasonic’s 3-D prototype will be demoed at CEATEC Japan 2009 in Chiba City, Oct. 6-10.

The AP launched a new AP Stylebook iPhone app presenting many of the well-known style guide’s tips and references in an interactive format. The $28.99 app, (that’s even more than the $25 ScrollMotion is charging to read Dan Brown’s new tome The Lost Symbol on the iPhone,) enables writers to search for the main, sports, business and punctuation sections, as well as add your own custom entries and notes on AP listings.

Underutilized TV producer Paul Sherno has put together a fun little first person shooter, Assassin FPS, for the iPhone. Target the bad guys with an AK-47, Bazooka or Lazer Blaster or use the interactive sniper scope function to send screen shots to your friends.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Hallmark Channel owner Crown Media Holdings upped Edward Georger to EVP/Advertising Sales. Edward is based in New York and will be reporting to CEO Bill Abbott. In addition, Cindy Kelly was promoted to SVP/National Advertising Sales, and Stephanie Versichelli has joined the company as SVP/Eastern Sales. Both Cindy and Stephanie will report to Mr. Georger.

Former Vivendi video game executive Andre Emerson was hired by Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising to serve as VP/Video Game Production, a newly created position. He will oversee the production of Fox’s portfolio of video game projects based on its popular TV and film library, reporting in Hollywood to Gary Rosenfeld, SVP of New Media.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE WALTER KAITZ FOUNDATION

“Champions are made from something they have deep inside them  a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. With your support, we’re all champions.

MAKE A STATEMENT. MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

CBS Interactive’s TV.com has made TV watching a little more social with the introduction of WatchList, a new online app that allows you to manage your TV.com interface and share your viewing likes and dislikes with friends. TV.com has been a little ahead of the curve in terms of social features and this one is wonderfully simple and straightforward. Simply browse through the list of shows currently airing new episodes (sorry, no Burn Notice, for instance), then with TV.com’s Facebook Connect integration, your friends can see what shows you watch, plan to watch or better yet, what episodes you’ve seen. (Given busy schedules and time-shifting, not everyone is on the same schedule and you don’t want to give anything away.) The WatchList interface then tells you when your shows are on and allows you to try to and prod your friends to watch upcoming episodes. (Video previews of select upcoming episodes are also available, indicated by a little green play logo next to the show title.) This could dovetail nicely with TV.com’s Social Viewing Room app if they ever get serious about it, which enables you to watch full episodes of shows with friends while chatting or throwing laughs, tomatoes or kisses at the screen.
