10/16/08

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premiere:
truTV: Speeders Fight Back at 830p

Tonight’s Finale:
VH1: Glam God with Vivica A. Fox at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

A handful of network primetime series pick-ups and series orders:

  • CBS handed out a full season order for frosh drama The Mentalist starring Simon Baker. So far The Mentalist has averaged a 3.8/9 with A18-49 and a 5.3/12 with A25-54 in its Tuesday 9p time slot.
  • NBC okayed three additional scripts for midseason drama Medium, writes THR. NBC may add the series to its schedule before the end of the year instead of waiting until 1st Qtr. Medium is created by Glenn Gordon Carol and produced by Picturemaker Productions, Inc. in association with Grammnet Productions and Paramount Network Television.
  • ABC is moving forward on four more scripts for Eli Stone produced by ABC Studios, says THR.

Major League Baseball said FOX could move the start time of the World Series Game 6 back by 15 minutes on October 29, allowing for a half-hour time buy from Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Last week, the Obama campaign bought 30 live minutes on the same night from CBS and NBC, wanting to lock in FOX as well. The potential World Series Game 6 would then begin at 835p.

Racing to truTV tonight at 830p is the new series Speeders Fight Back, a spin-off of the network’s series Speeders. Shot in Broward County, FL, the new series witnesses speeders serving up wacky excuses for their driving infractions to Chief Magistrate Brenda Di Ioia in traffic court. Zoo Productions produces for truTV.

VH1 brings back Best Week Ever, the 30m series parody of pop culture topics, for a new season beginning October 24 at 11p. Paul F. Tompkins joins the ensemble cast as host.

Military Channel premieres the docu-drama series Warriors on November 2 at 10p. Over six episodes shot on location and using CGI to reconstruct battles and strategy, Warriors offers a unique insider look at historic leaders Napoleon, Attila the Hun, Cortes, Spartacus, Richard the Lionheart and shogun Tokugawa Ieyasus. The series is co-produced by BBC, Discovery Communications Inc., ProSieben, ERT.

TLC’s fourth season premiere of Little People, Big World Monday at 8p attracted 1.1 million A25-54; 742,000 W25-54; 713,000 W18-49; as well as 2.3 million total viewers.

MTV is giving rapper mogul 50 Cent his own show, 50 Cent: The Money and the Power, a reality competition series designed to teach aspiring entrepreneurs how to build their own business. The series opens November 6 at 10p and follows 14 contestants as they maneuver through business challenges while living together in a Brooklyn warehouse called Camp Curtis. 50 Cent will be actively involved in working with the contestants and narrowing the field down to one who wins $100,000. Tony Yaho will join 50 Cent as his right-hand guy and special appearances will be made by LL Cool J, Aubrey O’Day, Danity Kane among others. The series is produced by MTV and Ish Entertainment.

MTV Tr3s opens a new season of Pimpeando with eight 60m episodes starting October 20 at 4p and again at 9p. The series offers a Latin look at the world of cars from race cars, car gadgets to lowrider bicycles and what girls really think of cars. Latin hip-hop artist Omar Cruz joins as host for the new season.

This week, Cablevision Systems Corp. adds five new free HD channels to its roster: MTV HD, VH1 HD, CMT HD, Fuse HD and NHL Network HD. With this addition, Cablevision now offers 65 free HD channels for its 1.25+ million subscribers, per Multichannel News.

Nielsen reports 9+ million households are still not prepared for the upcoming all-digital transition happening on February 17, 2009. These households will not receive a television signal if they do not buy a digital TV set, connect to cable, a satellite provider or alternate delivery system or get a converter box by the conversion date. Nielsen further notes that an additional 12.6 million households own at least one TV set that is not digital ready.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Matt Lucas (Little Britain) is joining Sean Maguire (Meet the Spartans) and the already-in-place ensemble cast of Comedy Central’s new comedy-fantasy series Krod Mandoon and The Flaming Sword of Fire. Co-produced by Comedy Central, Media Rights Capital, Hat Trick Productions and BBC Television, the series is currently in production in Budapest, Hungary and will debut next spring.

MTV announced it will serve up bonus episodes of its Making The Band series early next year. The series, executive produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ted Iredell and Perry Dance, will pick up where the most recent season ended, answering viewers questions about what happens to Danity Kane, Day26 and Donnie Klang. Bad Boy Entertainment produces.

CBS and Tribeca Productions are partnering to develop three pilots, with one of the three guaranteed to be produced as a series pilot, cites Variety. The pact involves Tribeca’s partners Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal as executive producers on a 60m drama pilot set in New York produced in association with Media Rights Capital and written by William Monahan (The Departed) for a potential fall 2009 roll-out.

NBC approved a series commitment for a new one-hour legal drama from David E. Kelley. This project, the first for Kelley at Warner Bros. Television, is about a father and daughter who are both lawyers.

NBC also snagged a script surrounding the Greek myth Jason and the Argonauts from Josh and Jonas Pate (Moonlight, Surface), reports THR. If this project goes to series, NBC might shoot it entirely on a green screen, similar to how SCI FI Channel produces its new series Sanctuary.

Caroline Williams’ (Miss/Guided) first TV pitch for her single camera comedy Made Over was picked up as a put pilot commitment by ABC, per THR. Made Over is reminiscent of the film Jerry Maguire about a shallow cosmetics executive in Los Angeles who decides to quit her career to join a younger woman in a consulting business. Warner Bros. Television is producing via a blind script agreement.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The Google Content Network has another entrant jockeying for views and dollars on the new platform. Poptub is a video series meant to keep users up to date with what’s cool on YouTube, described by THR as an Entertainment Tonight for the portal. (It’s actually Embassy Row’s resurrection of their show The 9 also hosted by Maria Sansone, which appeared exclusively on Yahoo until it was cancelled in April.) Like Seth McFarland’s long-titled Cartoon Cavalcade of Comedy, Poptub will generate revenue by delivering demo-based impressions for sponsor Pepsi as the videos are syndicated via Google AdSense across the web. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
