Cynopsis: Kids!

11/19/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This week marks BBC Worldwide Channels‘ launch of CBeebies, targeted to preschoolers, and BBC Entertainment channels in Argentina via a distribution pact with cable company Supercanal.  Both channels can now be seen in the provinces of Mendoza, Santiago, San Juan, La Rioja, Santa Fe, San Luis and Chubut.  CBeebies and BBC Entertainment launched in Latin America just over a year ago, where they are available as part of a distribution deal with Televisa Networks across the region (excluding Argentina and Brazil).

DirecTV finds a new leader in Michael White, who is named as its new President and CEO.  White is currently CEO, PepsiCo International and Vice Chairman of PepsiCo, he announced in September that he was retiring from those positions.  He will take on his new adventure at DirecTV on January 1, 2010, where he also joins the Board of Directors.  Larry Hunter has served as the interim CEO since June, following Chase Carey’s departure to News Corp.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers movies, G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra) inks a deal with to produce movie adaptations of author Michael Scott‘s six-part book series The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel (Delacorte Press Books), according to Variety.  Produced under di Bonaventura’s Di Bonaventura Pictures, the movie will be executive produced by Scott and Barry Krost.  The series revolves around 15-year-old twins Sophie and Josh that travel the world with the alchemist Nicholas Flamel.  Flamel was a real historical figure and French alchemist that lived in 1330-1418.  Flamel was mentioned in J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone).  The first three books in the series, The Alchemyst, The Magician and The Sorceress, are already available in 37 countries (20 languages), with the fourth title, The Necromancer, set for publication in May 2010.  The book series had initially been optioned several years ago by New Line, with Mark Burnett set to produce, per the report.

Sam Neill joins the voice over cast of Animal Logic’s 3D animated feature film Guardians of Ga’hoole, which is based on the first three books in author Kathryn Lasky’s kid-targeted eponymous book series, per THR.  Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchman), the Warner Bros./Village Roadshow Pictures movie is slated for release in Australia on December 9, 2010.  As previously reported the voice cast for the movie also includes Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham, Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Jay Laga’aia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren and Jim Sturgess.  It is unclear if Hugh Jackman is still involved with this project.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group inks a three-year marketing and distribution agreement with CBS Films.  The deal will see Sony Pictures will handle international theatrical distribution and worldwide home entertainment distribution of CBS Films productions.  CBS Films will handle domestic theatrical distribution of all titles and retains rights in a limited number of foreign territories.  Among the many films that CBS Films is working on, most of which are aimed at adult audiences (action/thrillers, romances, etc.), there is at least one aimed at tweens/teens.  Beastly, currently in production, is an “edgy teen romance” that is an adaptation of Beauty and The Beast.  Beastly stars Vanessa Hudgens (Bandslam, High School Musical) and Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker) and is written and directed by Daniel Barnz (Phoebe in Wonderland).

Fireworks International, the TV and digital distribution arm of ContentFilm, complete sales of the tween-targeted live action series Family Biz (26×30) in Latin America to Boomerang, a Turner Broadcasting System network.  Created by James Nadler (The Zack Files) and produced by Muse Entertainment/Summit Crescent Productions and Breakout Films, Family Biz will premiere in primetime on Boomerang this month in Latin America.  Boomerang recently acquired other series from Fireworks International including the teen-aimed drama The Assistants (13×30) and the family drama Heartland (49×60).

Sesame Workshop and design company IDEO (they made the cool Balloonimals app) partner for the new Grover’s Number Special App ($2.99) that featuring Sesame Street’s Grover.  This marks the first official Sesame Street app for the iPhone and iPod touch.  Grover’s Number Special app ( www.ideotoylab.com ) features Grover as the restaurant waiter trying to do everything when the cook doesn’t show up.  Kids can help out Grover in the kitchen to catch and count and ingredients for nutritious meals.  Upcoming Sesame Street apps from the partnership include Elmo’s Monster Maker and Sesame Street 123.  Additionally, as part of the Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary, iTunes will launch select episodes from the current season of the series featuring a range of celebrity guests.  Also available are brand new episodes of the weekly Sesame Street Podcast, and the ever-growing collection of Sesame Street music.

Cookie Jar Group expands its operation with the opening of a new office in South Korea and has named CJ Lee as VP/Distribution.  Focusing on production and development opportunities in South Korea and Asia, Lee will handle TV sales and through CPLG, Cookie Jar’s licensing arm, will develop licensing programs.  He will report to Hideki Kunugiyama, MD/CPLG Asia/Pacific.  Most recently, Lee served as MD and consultant for GIMC where he oversaw international co-productions and served as a creative producer.  Previously, he was MD and co-owner of Starburst Animation Company, working with companies including DreamWorks, Disney, Warner Bros. and Scholastic Entertainment.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  He wore a flattened piece of metal around his neck, which was originally a ring with a figure of a cross on it.   Who is he, and who gave him the ring?  THE LONE RANGER WORE THE RING TONTO GAVE HIM.  JOHN REID CAME ACROSS TONTO AFTER HIS INDIAN VILLAGE HAD BEEN ATTACKED AND NURSED TONTO BACK TO HEALTH.  BEFORE LEAVING HIM, TONTO THANKED REID BY GIVING HIM THE RING.  YEARS LATER, TONTO CAME ACROSS REID WHO WAS WOUNDED AND RETURNED THE FAVOR, RECOGNIZING HIM BY SEEING THE RING (NOW CRUSHED) WORN AROUND REID’S NECK. Kudos to … me!  Okay that was a tough one … and while on the first read today’s may sound tough, it isn’t really ….

Today’s Trivia Question:  On March 5, 1955, NBC aired the very first television network presentation of a full Broadway show.  What was the show?     (Email Cynthia@cynopsis.com with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
