Cynopsis: DIGITAL

11/19/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, November 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

As YouTube continues to fill out its music catalogue, Hulu announced a partnership with EMI to showcase music video and concert footage on the site. As an example of what to expect, a minisite devoted to Norah Jones has been created, featuring video clips and excerpts from live performances. Hulu will also utilize such music pages to drive viewers to music-themed TV episodes and movies, such as this documentary on the Flaming Lips. Meanwhile the highly anticipated Vevo music video site, a joint venture between Sony, Universal and YouTube, has set a launch date of Dec. 8.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

After a lengthy delay caused by the filing of a civil lawsuit against director Julian Breeece, Viacom’s BET.com is ready to premiere Buppies on Tuesday Nov. 24, an all-black web series starring Tatyana Ali as Quinci Allen (best known for her role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.) The 10-episode show revolves around a group of friends as they navigate the tricky terrain of L.A.’s young black “power elite.” CoverGirl has signed on as the show’s inaugural sponsor.

As part of NBCU’s “Green is Universal” week Former Vice President Al Gore (who is also appearing on 30 Rock tonight) will pen an exclusive, first-person essay for iVillage.com about the importance of teaching children the value of our planet.

Weeds star Justin Kirk ( a different kind of naturalist who plays Andy Botwin in the show) is back with a second season of the interactive University of Andy web series for Showtime with new episodes premiering every 2-3 weeks. “Uncle Andy” imparts more life lessons then tests users to make sure their short-term memory isn’t completely shot.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Operators of the infamous The Pirate Bay shuttered the site’s BitTorrent tracker on Tuesday but the company is already looking for a more decentralized way to facilitate peer-to-peer downloading, according a posting on the company’s blog. The site has been intermittently down for the past few months as studios have tried to pressure its ISPs to discontinue service to the site. The post states that trackers (servers that bootstrap each BitTorrent download) are no longer necessary with enhancements like DHT and PEX that allow peers to locate one another without accessing a central server. The site’s co-founders were convicted of facilitating illegal copyright infringement in April, a decision the group is appealing.

After a number of highly publicized incidents, Facebook has adopted a new privacy policy designed to be more straightforward and comprehensive. With help from some 7,000 users, the company has revised the language of Facebook Site Governance Page to remove legalize and provide more links, examples and illustrations.

Comcast Spotlight, the MSO’s local ad sales division, unveiled a new Video Circulars on Demand product, essentially enabling local advertisers such as Best Buy and Target to repurpose the creative and messaging they devise for newspaper inserts and adapt them into offer-specific video circulars. Digital cable customers can turn to channel 887 to browse the ads. Comcast is promoting the offering in a series of in-footprint :30 second spots, as well as banner ads and in-guide spots.

Car maker Infiniti has renewed its sponsorship of the second season of Sundance Channel‘s original series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with …, premiering Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 9 pm ET. The focal point of the multi-screen partnership is the Infiniti-branded 14 episode original web series, “Inspiration Sessions,” to be streamed on both the Sundance and Infiniti web sites, consisting of conversations between famous artists and the producers they work with. Pairings include Sir Elton John (executive producer of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with …) and Scissor Sisters.

Gatorade and Fox Sports Net (FSN) have announced a national broadcast and digital partnership to build on the success of Replay, the popular original program created by Gatorade that restages classic games from great sports rivalries. The Gatorade/FSN partnership will include the national broadcast of the inaugural season of REPLAY on all FSN affiliates as well as a presence at replaytheseries.com.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Microsoft unveiled the beta version of Silverlight 4 at a developer’s conference in LA yesterday, the company’s latest attempt to dethrone Adobe’s Flash as the defacto standard for video streaming on the web. The new Silverlight improves upon the platform’s HD and smooth streaming capabilities and will feature an array of new features and tools built around Microsoft’s
.NET platform, including:

  • Fluid interface enhancements advance application usability through animation effects
  • Webcam and microphone to allow sharing of video and audio
  • Audio and video local recording capabilities capturing raw video without requiring server interaction
  • The ability to bring data in to your application with new features such as copy and paste or drag and drop

Software-based web video management firm KIT Digital has launched a new partner program, adding 20 Sales and Implementation Partners in an effort to expand its global footprint to over 40 countries. Partners include Astreya, GoTV, Internap in the Americas; Complete TV, DigiSoft, Digotel in Europe and the Middle East; and Spotzer, TigerSpike, and WebAlive in the Asia-Pacific region.

Video processing and enhancement technology provider Ipera Technology launched an upgrade of its Pixel Xtream v2 HD and SD video transcoder software, designed to handle high-quality encoding and archiving of content for broadcasters’ “TV Everwhere” push.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The idea of charging for news online may actually fly with many online users, according to a new survey from The Boston Consulting Group. The amount folks are willing to pay fluctuated by country; BCG found that the average monthly amount that consumers would be prepared to pay ranges from $3 in the United States and Australia to $7 in Italy. Consumers were more likely to pay for certain types of content, specifically news that is:

  • Unique, such as local news (67% overall are interested; 72% of U.S. respondents) or specialized coverage (63% overall are interested; 73% of U.S. respondents)
  • Timely, such as a continual news alert service (54%/61%)
  • Conveniently accessible on a device of choice
  • Consumers are more likely to pay for online news provided by newspapers than by other media, such as television stations, Web sites, or online portals
  • They are specifically not interested in paying for news that is routinely available on a wide range of Web sites for free

Retailers are going to have their work cut out for them this holiday season, according to a new Nielsen survey. 42% of respondents said they were planning on spending less money on holiday gifts that last year, with only 4% intending to spend more. Of the money that consumers plan to spend this holiday season, a smaller percentage will be spent online: 63% of survey respondents said that they would do at least some holiday shopping online – down 10 points from two years ago.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The folks at Sesame Workshop are celebrating the 40th year of Sesame Street with their first iPhone app, the $2.99 Grover’s Number Special App, one of 3 apps planned for imminent release. Kids can tilt the phone to catch falling ingredients that make up a balanced meal.

Sony
began taking pre-orders for its $399 3G-powered Daily Edition e-book reader on Wednesday, but the company is no longer guaranteeing a holiday delivery. (Sony is hedging its bets saying that pre-orders will ship anywhere from Dec. 18-Jan. 8.)

Meanwhile Barnes & Noble is still sticking by its Dec. 18 ship date for its own e-book reader, The nook. Like’s Sony’s devices, the B&N gadget is embracing Adobe’s cross-platform solution enabling it to read PDF, HTML, JPEG, GIF etc., setting it apart from Amazon’s proprietary AXW format.

Netflix members can now instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix directly to TVs via Sony Bravia Internet Video-capable HDTVs and the Sony Network Blu-ray Disc Player. Rather than requiring a hard copy DVD as with the PS3, Sony has added access to Netflix through a software update.

In more Sony news, the PlayStation 3 received a firmware update yesterday that will allow PlayStation Network users to log in using their Facebook account, tying PS3 activity to users’ news feeds.

Microsoft has also released an update to its Xbox 360 platform adding Facebook and Twitter apps to the dashboard, as well as access to CBS Interactive’s Last.fm and the Zune Marketplace.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Clearleap tapped Peter J. Ansel as its VP/Business Development, overseeing strategic partnerships, alliances and technology integrations. Previous to joining TV technology platform, Peter was VP/Advertising Strategy at Move Networks.

Jennifer Kalat
has been named Beauty Managing Director of Meredith’s Meredith 360° strategic marketing unit. She will be responsible for increasing visibility and awareness of Meredith within the beauty community, reporting directly Jeannine Shao Collins, SVP/Meredith 360°.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Personalization (ie, giving readers the power to decide what kind of content they want pushed toward them) is one of the defining trends of web publishing these days and it’s one that newspaper publishers can only ignore at their peril. A couple of sites are pointing the way toward how modern users want to receive their information. Kosmix.com’s new Meehive service packages breaking news from outlets around the world by allowing you to set Google alert-style topics that interest you. Mountain View, CA-based Meehive’s search engine is indiscriminate in that in combs news articles, blogs, editorials, press releases and Tweets for information. Another new London-based site called Fingertips takes a more traditional approach, concentrating on mainstream publications and providing a drag-and-drop interface that allows you to create your own category-based homepage as a newspaper editor would create a print-based layout. An extensive tick box menu allows you choose what kind of news you want. It’s hard to believe these services will displace more established widget-based home page templates like Netvibes or iGoogle, but they could pave the way for paid content interfaces on new platforms such as ebook readers and smartphones.
