Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Production has begun on the new CBeebies sketch show series, Gigglebiz (25 episodes), featuring Justin Fletcher and his cast of characters. Scheduled to launch this summer, Gigglebiz is CBeebies’ first ever live-action sketch show. The series is being shot both on location and in studio at Elstree. Fletcher is best known to fans as Mr Tumble and the host of CBeebies Something Special. Gigglebiz is being produced by Michael Towner, and will feature sketches penned by writers from BBC Entertainment’s Comedy School working with some of the network’s squad of writers and Fletcher.
Shaw Communications’ Shaw Video and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central will roll out a range of ongoing 3D content, including movies, family programming, sports, concerts and specials on TV in Canada. Set to launch this summer, the initial schedule of 3-D content will include NASCAR: The Imax Experience and film titles such as Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, and Warner Bros. Deep Sea, the 3-D Imax underwater adventure narrated by Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp. Shaw will provide free 3-D glasses (the red and blue variety) to all its subscribers.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The new buddy comedy series Zeke and Luther is set to premiere on Disney XD and DisneyXD.com (www.disneyxd.com), Monday, June 15 at 8:30p. Created by Matt Dearborn and Tom Burkhard (the duo behind Even Stevens) and produced by Turtle Rock Productions, Zeke and Luther followed the adventures of tween best friends and their pursuit to become world famous skateboarders. Exclusive full episode previews will be available for free on iTunes beginning Monday, June 1 and via Disney Channel on Demand for Verizon subscribers from Monday, June 8. Leading up to the series debut, DisneyXD.com will feature the online game Zeke and Luther Challenge, with two additional games, Donut Run and Skate Tricks, launching in the site on May 15 and June 1, respectively. Additionally, joining the network line-up with encore episodes is The Suite Life on Deck at 9p.
Nicktoons Network picks up a second season (26 episodes) of the new animated series Wolverine and the X-Men from Marvel Entertainment, for a total of 52 episodes. Wolverine and the X-Men series debuted on the network in January 2008, earning the net its highest-rated April ever among core viewers and total viewers. New episodes from season one of Wolverine and the X-men will premiere on the network Fridays beginning May 22 at 8p, following Iron Man: Armored Adventures at 7p.
Atari unveiled its release plans for the worldwide launch of its new title, Ghostbusters: The Video Game (www.ghostbustersgame.com), this year, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original film’s theatrical release and the launch of the Blu-Ray of the first movie, and the worldwide licensing effort by Sony Pictures Consumer Products. In North America, Atari is publishing the game for all consoles on June 16. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is publishing the game exclusively for Playstation 3 and PlayStation 2 in Europe and PAL regions on June 19. The PSP version of the title will bow worldwide in fall 2009.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) is named as eh exclusive North American licensing agent for Cake Entertainment and Fresh TV‘s Total Drama franchise. Under the deal, CNE will develop a licensing and merchandising program across multiple categories including home video for the Total Drama franchise, which includes Total Drama Island and its new season, Total Drama Action. Total Drama Island debuted on Cartoon Network’s Har Har Tharsdays block in June 2008, and continues to run on the network, with the new series, Total Drama Action, currently in production and set to debut later this year.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release the new CGI animated adventure, Garfield’s Pet Force (1×70), direct to DVD on June, 16, 2009. The title includes the bonus feature DVD-ROM build your own superhero game, Professor Wally’s Moscrambulator.
For the second year running, Roary the Racing Car has become the official ambassador of the UK’s The Children’s Trust. To kick off this year, the producers, Chapman Entertainment, in conjunction with The Children’s Trust, Petrolhead Nirvana and Club Scuderia will launch an action-packed experience called ‘Dad’s Day Out’ on Saturday 16t May at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Cranleigh – the location of BBC2’s Top Gear. Dad’s Day Out, which will raise funds for The Children’s Trust, will also offer an opportunity for dad’s to ride in Italian sport scars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis. Kids will get the chance to meet Roary the Racing Car and Big Chris, as well as ride in pedal cars and various other activities in the play area.

While in NYC on Tuesday, May 5, First Lady Michelle Obama visited the set of Sesame Street where she joined with Elmo in taping a Public Service Announcement (PSA) as part of Sesame Workshop’s Healthy Habits For Life effort. The PSA, which will be offered to all outlets, features Mrs. Obama and Elmo talking about eating right, exercising regularly and asking adults to serve as healthy and positive role models for kids.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
US motion picture exhibitor Regal Entertainment unveiled its succession plan yesterday. CEO and Chairman and founder, Mike Campbell, will transfer his CEO responsibilities to Amy Miles, currently Regal’s CFO. Campbell will take on the role of full-time Executive Chairman. David Ownby, currently SVP/Finance and Chief Accounting Officer will become the company’s new CFO. The new executive appointments will be effective June 30, 2009.
