Cynopsis: DIGITAL

05/07/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, May 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Can the Kindle save the newspaper and magazine businesses? As expected, Amazon unveiled a version of its Kindle e-reader due out this summer with a larger 9.7-inch screen yesterday, optimized for viewing graphics-laden pages of periodicals and text books. There’s no color but the Kindle DX‘s larger screen displays 16 shades of gray and is much easier on the eyes that a backlit laptop screen. The 1/3 inch-thick device comes equipped with a 3.3 GB hard drive that can store up to 3,500 books, the availability of which continue to increase on the platform – the company has added 45,000 new titles in the past 3 months bringing the total to 275,000. Amazon has also struck deals with 3 major textbook publishers, and convinced papers such as The NY Times, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post to offer reduced monthly Kindle subscriptions. (NY Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. sees the DX as a great way to increase circulation outside of traditional delivery areas.) Now for the bad news: The thing is going to retail for nearly $489. There are netbooks out there cheaper than that.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Encouraged by the Wall Street Journal‘s success in getting subscribers to pay for its content online, News Corp. has cobbled together a global team of publishers to create a new model for charging for content distributed both online and via digital devices, per The Daily Beast. Several papers within the Rupert Murdoch-controlled empire are involved and new digital chief Jon Miller is currently in talks with other content providers outside of the company to join the initiative.

Crain‘s Television Week announced it is shutting down its print edition at the end of this month. Instead it will transition to an online only publication, under the jurisdiction of Crain’s BtoB and under the direction of TV Week publisher Chuck Ross. Formerly known as Electronic Media, the Los Angeles-based trade publication has published weekly since 1982.

Microsoft unveiled details of its “Xbox Primetime Live” initiative designed to bring interactivity to mainstream television audiences, per THR. Endemol TV’s “1 vs. 100” show, airing Friday and Saturday nights this summer and fall, will invite Xbox Live Gold members to play along with the show. Players can accumulate Xbox Live points, which can be redeemed for game, movie and episodic TV show downloads, as well as other content.

ABC News launched a branded channel on YouTube featuring crowd-friendly video outtakes from ABC News, Good Morning America, 20/20, Nightline, World News with Charles Gibson and This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

Meredith is throwing its spatula into the competitive food ring with MixingBowl.com, a new social network within the company’s Women’s Network block geared toward foodies. Launched in beta format in Jan., the site puts UGC at center page featuring searchable, community submitted recipes.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Tilzy.TV is putting together a web video “Onfronts” for advertisers on June 9 in New York featuring presentations from leading web studios including 60 Frames, Atom, Attention Span Media, blip.tv, DECA, EQAL, For Your Imagination, MyDamnChannel, NextNewNetworks, Revision3, Take 180 and Virtual Artists. Generate CEO Jordan Levin will deliver the keynote at the event.

CBS’s Last.fm unveiled a major redesign featuring a “Visual Radio” player that attempts to create a more vibrant experience and accompanying ad platform around its online radio service. Alongside of your selected music users can view a continuous stream of artist images, music videos and other rich media content from the artist being played.

Live video-powered social networking service Stickam took the beta tag off its white label live streaming solution initially announced in December, making it easy and relatively cheap to add live streaming to a web site. The StickamAPI service features a template with the tools necessary to build your own embeddable video player, chatroom or ongoing lifecasting stream – featuring a drag-and-drop interface and HD support. Stickam is offering the service for free for limited use applications and will charge on pay-as-you-go basis for heavier users.

Stickam is also powering the second annual Next TV Competition leading up to NATPE‘s annual LATV Festival in July. Contestants can register and upload their submissions in 7 different categories at Stickam.com by Friday, May 15, 2009. Finalists will be selected by both judges and the public via live internet shows with accompanied with live voting. Prizes include a six-month mentorship with a YouTube/Google development executive and producer and the opportunity to co-produce a six-episode Web series on what’s happening in television and new media.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The nascent iPhone ad industry is beginning to take hold, according to AdWhirl, a company (formerly known as AdRollo) that has built a no-nonsense ad platform for the device. Apps that crack the top 100 on the iPhone can pull in anywhere from $400 to $5,000/day in ad revenue, averaging a CPM of $1.90, according to the company. For instance, the Sound Grenade app generated over $3,000/day during its peak stage. The company is currently serving over 200 million monthly ads worldwide on iPhone and iPod Touch applications in the Apple App Store.

Video publishing rep firm Gorilla Nation has signed a deal with Dailymotion to represent the site’s branded online ad inventory in Canada. Dailymotion’s Canadian portal averaged 2.3 million monthly uniques during March, according to ComScore.

Correction: Dailymotion announced several new North American sales executives last week including former FIM employee Andrew Freedman. Andrew’s surname is actually Reedman.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Local stations have thus far had to resort to decidedly low-tech methods to get their HD syndicated programming from satellite feeds to their servers. Ascent Media Group, CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment have finally teamed to create a new platform to streamline the process, outlining a service footprint that will include a guaranteed minimum of 800 stations, including the top 100 DMAs. The platform, which can also be used to distribute standard def programming, builds on an existing relationship between Ascent and Warner Bros. digital content distribution arm – Global Digital Media Xchange (GDMX). The new service is expected to launch later this year.

After integrating with the SMS system of Bell Mobility in Canada, Twitter completed similar deals with Rogers and Fido to allow customers received text-based tweets for no extra data charges.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

One of the cool things about iPhone news application Stitcher is that it provides audio news, show and podcast streaming from a variety of sources. The start-up has been diligent in adding providers since launching last year. Apparently users appreciate the effort. The app beat out The New York Times, NPR, BBC and The Associated Press to win the People’s Voice Webby Award in the Mobile News Category.

This would qualify as a no brainer: AT&T launched a free app on Apple’s App Store to allow iPhone subscribers to manage their accounts. The myWireless app allows you to view monthly bills, make one-touch payments, track voice and data Usage – View all voice and data usage, including text messages and manage bolt-on features including texting plans.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

David Rehr
announced he is stepping down as President of the National Association of Broadcasters in the midst of broadcasters’ switch to digital. During an interim period, Janet McGregor, NAB’s Chief Operating and Financial officer, will work closely with David and assume day-to-day duties until a successor is named. As perhaps his last official act heading the NAB, Mr. Rehr sent a letter yesterday to Sens. John Kerry (MA) and John Ensign (NV), Chairman and ranking member, respectively, of the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, detailing the importance of ensuring a healthy broadcast system in the United States.

Henry Schleiff announced that he will be stepping down as President and CEO of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel parent company Crown Media on May 31, 2009. William J. Abbott, EVP/Ad Sales, will replace Henry as President and Chief Executive Officer. Abbott joined Crown Media in 2000 and is currently responsible for national ad sales, internet services and digital network development for the two cable networks.

DailyCandy CEO Pete Sheinbaum is leaving the company less than a year after Comcast purchased the site, per PaidContent. His last day is Friday.

NetShelter Technology Media announced its expansion into the UK, opening a London office to be led by former Starcom Mediavest International and IDG veteran Darren Higham. Darren will serve as the company’s Director of Sales for the UK and Europe.

Former Crispin Porter + Bogusky executive Paul Caiozzo is joining McCann Worldgroup San Francisco as SVP, Creative Director, effective June 1. He will play an important role in the agency’s business development program, reporting to Rob Bagot, Chief Creative Officer.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Journalist and author Elina Furman (former Editorial Director of WomansDay.com and Seventeen Online) is a big fan of the popular lifestyle email-zine Daily Candy. But after she gave birth to her son 14 months ago, she realized the days of rushing out to the latest hot spots or fashion sales were gone. She seeks to serve Moms’ need for keep on what’s trendy with Mamaista.com, a new website and daily email blast that profiles must-have gear, clothing, green products, food and accessories for mothers. “There’s tons of Mommy Blogs out there but none of them have a daily email product,” says Elina. “We’re going to pick one quality product each day then write about it in a fun, concise way.” To stress the separation of church and state, so to speak, Mamaista will hold off on running banner ads for the first few months, then clearly delineate ads from recommended products thereafter. Elina and her sister Leah will handle all of the writing duties until the pub has enough momentum to launch localized editions. Elina’s got her work cut out for her. But classic Mommy blogs like Heather Armstrong’s hilarious Dooce.com have created a voracious appetite for this stuff and there’s always room for a new format.
