Upfront week in New York wraps today with The CW presenting at Madison Square Garden. Early news from The CW reveals a few tidbits:

  • New drama Vampire Diaries will take a bite out of Thursdays as a lead-in to Supernatural.
  • The final and ninth season of Smallville will move to Fridays.
  • Revamped Melrose Place series will be paired with, what else?, 90210, reflecting the same programming strategy for the original Melrose Place which came after Beverly Hills, 90210 on FOX during the fall of 1992.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ION Media Networks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday in US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. ION cited liabilities totaling more than $1 billion and assets estimated at $10 million in its filing. ION did reach an agreement though with many of its debt-holders to exchange debt for equity in ION’s newly capitalized company. ION owns and operates nearly 60 television stations and its Ion Television network reaches 96 million cable, satellite and broadcast homes.

MTV opens the 22nd season of The Real World: Cancun on June 24 at 10p. Eight strangers will become roommates in a luxurious suite designed for the series in the hotel, ME Cancun. Bunim-Murray Productions created the franchise for MTV and produces the series.

Four of National Geographic Channel’s top series make come-backs this summer:

  • Hooked premieres in its first regular time slot on Mondays at 10p starting June 29.
  • Dog Whisperer and Cesar Millan return Fridays at 8p.
  • World’s Toughest Fixes is back with season two on Thursdays at 9p this June.
  • Locked Up Abroad premieres with six new episodes July 15 at 10p.

PBS digs up a new archeology series as Time Team America debuts July 8 at 8p. Based on the hit British series, a team of archaeological experts have three days to make a discovery at a major US historical site. Earlier on June 22 at 9p, PBS premieres the seventh season of History Detectives. Check local listings for exact air times of both series.

2009 UPFRONT: CBS

CBS announced its 2009-2010 primetime programming yesterday by introducing four new additions to its fall lineup. CBS also touted its ratings pointing out it is the only network to deliver increases over last season in several key demos: +12% in viewers, +3% in A18-49 and +8% in A25-54.

New dramas for fall include:

  • NCIS: Los Angeles – LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell headline this series about the world of undercover surveillance at the Office of Special Projects, a division of NCIS that works to capture dangerous criminals who threaten our national security. CBS Television Studios produces.
  • The Good Wife – Julianna Margulies stars as a wife and mother who must take charge of her family by pursuing her original career as a defense attorney after her husband, Peter (Chris Noth) ends up in jail following a public scandal. From CBS Television Studios.
  • Three Rivers – A medical drama about the complex lives of organ donors, the recipients and the surgeons at a prominent transplant hospital. Alex O’Loughlin stars as Dr. Andy Yablonski, the workaholic lead organ transplant surgeon. Produced by CBS Television Studios.

One new comedy for fall:

  • Accidentally on Purpose – Jenna Elfman stars as Billie, a single woman who becomes pregnant following a one-night stand with a younger guy. She decides to keep the baby and the guy. From CBS Television Studios.

New midseason dramas for CBS:

  • The Bridge – Centers on a tough and loyal police officer who wins the vote to become the police union’s new leader. He must now fight crime on the streets as well as corruption within the ranks and his own bosses. Produced by E1 Entertainment, 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and Jonsworth Productions in association with CTV and CBS Television Studios.
  • Miami Trauma – Focuses on a team of expert surgeons who work at one of the best trauma hospitals in the nation where only life threatening injuries are treated. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television Distribution.
  • New midseason alternative series includes:
  • Arranged Marriage – Three adults who all want to get married but who have been unsuccessful in finding love, rely on their closet family and friends to choose their perfect spouse. Produced by Magical Elves Inc.
  • Undercover Boss – Reality series follows top-ranking corporate executives as they take on the lowest level jobs within their companies. Undercover, they will discover how their employees really think and how their company operates. Produced by Studio Lambert, Ltd.

  • The network is returning 18 series to its schedule: CSI, Two and a Half Men, The Mentalist, 60 Minutes, Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, CSI: Miami, NCIS, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Gary Unmarried, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, 48 Hours Mystery and Cold Case.

2009 UPFRONT: TURNER ENTERTAINMENT NETWORKS

For a second consecutive year, Turner revealed its Upfront plans for TBS, TNT and truTV in New York during the same week as the broadcast networks. In Turner’s press briefing, Steve Koonin, President, Turner Entertainment Networks said, “Our networks are continuing to grow as rivals to broadcasters, with original programming that reaches a wide spectrum of viewers. With TNT, we are delivering on our promise to air original programming three nights a week. TBS is offering shows that attract young viewers and a diverse audience, while truTV continues to expand its lineup of exciting original series.”

TNT:

New series premiering this summer on TNT:

  • Hawthorne – Jada Pinkett Smith headlines as Christina Hawthorne, the determined and caring chief nursing officer at a Virginia hospital.
  • Dark Blue – From producer Jerry Bruckheimer, this police drama stars Dylan McDermott.
  • Wedding Day – Series gives deserving couples the wedding of their dreams from DreamWorks Television and Mark Burnett.

New TNT series coming this December:

  • Men of a Certain Age – Buddy series about guys approaching mid-life. Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula star.

TNT confirms four original series will return to its lineup this summer: the fifth season of The Closer starring Kyra Sedgwick; season three of Saving Grace headlined by Holly Hunter; and second seasons of Raising the Bar from executive producer Steven Bochco and Leverage from executive producer Dean Devlin.

TNT scripted dramas series in development:

  • Untitled Alien Invasion Project – Project ordered to pilot about the aftermath of a worldwide alien invasion and the group of ordinary heroes who fight for human survival. From DreamWorks Television and filmmaker Steven Spielberg who will serve as executive producer along with DreamWork’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and screenwriter Robert Rodat.
  • Class Action (wt) – Project follows an unlucky attorney who fights for the disenfranchised. From Steven Bochco and Stephen Godchaux (Spin City).
  • Zapata, Texas (wt) – Series about a small border town in Texas and its new sheriff who enters the world of politics and the US/Mexico border. Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon co-conceived this project and will executive produce and Bacon is tapped to direct.
  • Untitled Matt Williams Family Drama – Matt Williams, creator of Roseanne and co-creator of Home Improvement takes a personal look at the middle-American family who is keeping it together despite the obstacles of life.
  • Untitled Daniel Pyne Noir Drama – Set in 1954 Los Angeles, a private detective always tries to do the right thing in an ever-changing world. From Warner Horizon Television.
  • Pastor Jazz – Charles S. Dutton stars as Pastor Jazz, a minister who uses his passion for music to touch the hearts of the neediest to the wealthiest. From Warner Horizon Television.
  • Macalister – Author turned professor, Henry Shepard inspires boys at The Macalister School, an all-boys school in upstate New York for the wealthy and privileged.
  • Proof – Eccentric neuroscientist, Dr. Geoffrey Pierce uses his quirky perspective to help the federal government solve tough cases. From ABC Studios.

TNT unscripted dramas in development:

  • The Mayo Clinic – A look inside the renowned Mayo Clinic and the lives of Mayo doctors and their patients.
  • Trip of a Lifetime – Series reunites deserving family members with a lost loved one or a returned keepsake.

TBS:

Previously announced new shows:

  • Late-night talk show starring George Lopez featuring a street-party atmosphere and an enthusiastic crowd. Slated for this November from 2.2 Productions, paraMedia Inc. and Telepictures Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.
  • Neighbors from Hell – 30m animated series about the Hellmans, a normal suburban family who happens to be from hell. Coming in 2010 from Fox TV Animation, DreamWorks Animation SKG and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

In addition, TBS will premiere new episodes of Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns on May 27 and in July, The Bill Engvall Show returns for a third season on Saturdays.

TBS series in development include:

  • The Game of Life – Half-hour comedy about four Pittsburgh friends as they reunite in their early 30s and realize life didn’t turn out as they planned. From Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Kevin James, Rock Reuben and Jeff Sussman.
  • Big Tow – Animated project about a small-town Tennessee single dad and local hero who operates a towing company. From Sony Pictures Television and Tantamount.
  • Wee Hours – Slice-of-life sketch comedy features the Second City comedy troupe relating stories of Chicagoans during the wee hours of midnight to 6a. From Second City TV.

truTV:

Following its major rebrand last year, truTV continues to grow as a focal network for young men, attracting action-seekers and decreasing its median age by five years to 47.

New truTV original series projects:

  • NFL Full Contact (wt) – The network and NFL Films will offer an exclusive look at what really goes on behind the scenes in professional football from draft day to the Super Bowl.
  • Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura – Former WWE superstar and governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura will uncover modern-day conspiracy theories. Produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.
  • U.S. Special Ops: Declassified (wt) – Series reveals the case files of America’s elite terrorist hunters using computer animation, recreations and interview with real agents. From 44 Blue Productions.
  • Full Throttle – Four-part series takes viewers inside the largest biker bar in the world, Ballard’s Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, SD during the famous nine-day motorcycle rally. Produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.

2009 UPFRONT: Discovery en Espanol

Discovery en Espanol introduces a slate of Spanish-language programming targeting A18-49.

New Series include:

  • River Monsters – Ecologist, adventurer, anthropologist and angler, Jeremy Wade traverses the world’s rivers looking for the most dangerous underwater creatures.
  • Science of the Movies – Magazine series takes a look at the latest movie and TV technology and trends.
  • Maras the Series – Original series is a spin-off of the Maras special that aired in 2007 offering in-depth analysis on Latin American gangs.
  • Walk the Lion – Big cat expert Dave Salmoni lives for a year in Africa’s Kalahari Desert with a pride of lions armed only with a walking stick.
  • Crimes that Shook Latin America – Six-hour docu-drama original series examining the most heinous criminals in Latin America.
  • Bio Recon – Series follows Donald Schultz, a venom expert, who extracts collects bio-specimens for groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

Discovery en Espanol will also air three epic blockbusters including the six-part series South Pacific; Life from the production team behind the Planet Earth series; and the three-part series Yellowstone: Tales from the Wild.

In addition, Discovery en Espanol confirms the return of several series including: Storm Chasers, I Shouldn’t Be Alive, Man vs. Wild, Deadliest Catch, Whale Wars, Raging Planet and Out of the Wild: Alaska Experiment.

2009-2010 Programming Slate: MTV Tr3s

MTV Tr3s, available in 7 million Hispanic TV households and 38 million total TV households, is dedicated to bicultural Latino youth. The network unveils a new programming slate including:

  • Isa TKM (Isa Te Quiero Mucho) – Original teen telenovela airing Monday-Friday and combining humor, music and romance. A co-production of Nickelodeon Latin America and Sony Pictures Television premiering June 22 at 5p.
  • El Click – Interactive series allowing viewers get to offer the content from comments, pictures, dedications and more. Airs Monday-Friday and debuts June 1 at 330p.
  • Quiero Mi Boda – First spin-off series of Quiero Mis Quinces celebrates the “bodas” (weddings) that bring Latino families together and watches as young Latinos go through their wedding preparations. Premieres early 2010.

MTV Tr3s programming note: original series Quiero Mis Quinces, a popular favorite among Hispanic girls 12-17 will return this October with a fourth season.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Microsoft is planning to introduce a brand new search engine next week at the D: All Things Digital conference as it scrambles to try and regain market share in search advertising from Google, per the WSJ. Code-named “Kumo” (“cloud” or “spider” in Japanese,) the search engine is designed to streamline searches for products or subjects by grouping them into categories. WPP’s JWT agency has been hired to promote the launch. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  PBS and Panache, an ad-insertion platform for media and entertainment companies, partner to integrate Panache’s platform into PBS’s video management system.  This move will allow PBS Kids Go! producers to place interactive game elements within any video content on the programming block’s website, which will let games run directly inside the PBS Kids Go video player, which offers show video clips and full-length episodes.  By enabling producers to assign and schedule game content over specific broadband videos within Panache’s, which features specific reporting capabilities, PBS Kids Go will be able to track the effectiveness of their interactive elements.  The first series adding the Panache-enabled game interactivity to online videos include Arthur, Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman, Cyberchase and WordGirl, which will be followed by The Electric Company. Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis: With May Sweeps nearing its end, FOX continued to dominate A18-49 Tuesday with 6.3/17 A18-49 according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, the Part 1 finale of American Idol on FOX swept through the ranks taking #1 with an 8.6/25 followed by the season finale of CBS’ NCIS at 3.4/10. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars season eight finale topped the charts during 9p with 4.7/12 while FOX’s preview of new series Glee placed second at 3.9/10 and CBS’ The Mentalist season finale came in third at 3.7/10. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars finale stayed in the winning groove through 10p with 5.7/15 with CBS’ Without a Trace finale and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU sharing second place at 2.5/7 each.

Tribune Company and its Board of Directors approved the promotion of a handful of executives, effective immediately: Steve Gable to EVP/CTO; David Eldersveld to SVP/Deputy Counsel and Corporate Secretary; Dan Kazan to SVP/Development; and Naomi Sachs as SVP/Strategy.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) named Keith Hindle as CEO for the Americas.
