05/21/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, May 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Microsoft is planning to introduce a brand new search engine next week at the D: All Things Digital conference as it scrambles to try and regain market share in search advertising from Google, per the WSJ. Code-named “Kumo” (“cloud” or “spider” in Japanese,) the search engine is designed to streamline searches for products or subjects by grouping them into categories. WPP’s JWT agency has been hired to promote the launch. Competitor Yahoo also unveiled some improvements to its search product this week, incorporating a more answers-oriented approach as featured on About.com.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The ambitious, environmentally-themed documentary Home, directed by French photographer and author Yann Arthus-Bertrand, produced by Luc Besson and narrated by Glen Close, is getting a true multiplatform release. The film will be released in theaters, air on NGC HD, hit stores via Twentieth Century Fox DVD and Blu-ray and stream online in over 50 countries on World Environmental Day on Friday, June 5. The telecast begins on NGC at 9 pm ET/PT.

At Comcast’s E! network its all tweets, all the time. The channel started running a scrolling Twitter ticker from popular celebrities across the screen during regular programming. Fans can also download a widget broadcasting the various feeds on E! Online.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

As we’ve seen, renegade web video control panel developers aren’t always welcomed. Joost is making an exception for indie developer Paul Yanez, who has put together a new downloadable Joost Media Player app using the Adobe Air platform, noticed NewTeeVee. It’s sort of a return to the original version of Joost, disabling newsfeeds from users that are so central to the new Joost experience. But it does include a Twitter integration.

Social music service Blip.fm, that allows you to build playlists and search for a song then add a short Tweet-style message to it, has added YouTube videos to its music feed, notes GigaOm.

Fans of the William Shatner’s ill-fated singing career may want to check out the latest posting on the AFI‘s YouTube page. He channels Ol’ Blue Eyes in his tribute to George Lucas’ Lifetime Achievement Award (although he doesn’t really sing.)

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

ESPN will become the first cable network to integrate its own media player onto YouTube and to feature pre-roll advertising on the portal, per AdAge. (Other media brands such as Sony’s Crackle have previously imported their players.) The network plans to launch the branded player on July 15, featuring clips from taped programming.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Craigslist struck back yesterday filing a lawsuit of its own against South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, seeking declaratory relief and a restraining order to prevent further criminal charges from being filed. The prosecutor has demanded that Craigslist remove portions of its site that deal with adult services, even after the listings service took steps to legitimize the category.

Software-based CDN solution Contendo signed deals to provide content delivery services for Conduit and Seeking Alpha.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

It appears that the proliferation of video on web sites and mobile phones is still proving to be additive to the television mother ship, according to Nielsen‘s latest Three Screen Report. Americans are watching more TV overall and more timeshifted television, even as their internet video consumption grew by 50% y/y. Meanwhile, mobile video viewing has grown by a significant 52% from the previous year, now consumed by 13.4 million Americans. (Nielsen noted last week that iPhone users in particular are driving increased media consumption; they are more than four times as likely to use the mobile internet, six times as likely to use mobile applications and six times as likely to consume mobile video.) Younger viewers are changing their habits most rapidly; 18-24 year olds spent virtually the same amount of time watching video on their DVR as they did online – timeshifting 5 hrs, 47 minutes/month and watching 5 hrs, 3 min/month online.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

A start-up named Ethervision launches Skateropolis this morning, a new social iPhone app geared for skateboarders allowing skaters to upload their own boarding videos directly from the app. The company’s sponsor pool is as targeted as its user base. Ethervision is only partnering with companies that have a proven benefit to the skate industry. There’s even a local component; local skate shops will sponsor local skatepark pages in yearly increments.

This is a step in the right direction. Microsoft is adding Netflix streaming capabilities to its Media Center software, one of first popular tools to enable the “last ten feet” viewing experience on your television. Expect it to be bundled with the release of the more expensive versions of Windows 7 later this year.

Sanyo announced a portable widescreen LCD projector featuring the world’s first high-speed 802.11n wireless LAN capability. That means you can network it to your computer and stream videos from Hulu or your favorite site without having to run unwieldy cables. The PLC-WXU700 also features 1280 x 800 WXGA resolution and 3800 lumens of brightness. It has a June release date and a sticker price of $3,000.

AT&T
announced it will expand its portfolio of embedded 3G mini laptops this summer – and make them available in AT&T stores nationwide. The lineup will include Acer, Dell and Lenovo mini laptops.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Ascent Media Group
announced the appointments of Emily Keeton as SVP/Corporate Development; Adam Poulte as SVP/Global Sales and Account Management; and Staci Miller as VP/Strategic Initiatives. All three are based at the company’s Santa Monica, CA headquarters.

UK-based online lead generation firm Clash-Media appointed former Advertising.com executive Gavin Stirrat as Chief Operating Officer. He is charged with streamlining business procedures and automating digital marketing processes.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Like the iPhone in the mobile space, Facebook suffers from too much of a good thing. More than 50,000 applications have been built for the leading social networking platform and it’s getting increasingly difficult to figure out what’s worth taking a flier on. The platform addressed this problem yesterday with the launch of an Application Directory, encouraging the cream to rise to the top by directing users to popular apps, apps your friends are using and apps that Facebook thinks you may like based on past preferences. ( Here‘s a little video primer of the feature that sounds just like those Apple iPhone ads.) Those that sport a green checkmark have been “verified” by Facebook staffers (developers must pony up $375 to submit their app for approval.) And like iTunes, Facebook will choose some to recommend to users, apps like Zimride’s Carpool app, which helps you find friends to share rides with, and the popular Flixter app, which allows you to share with your friends what movies you’ve recently seen.
