Each week during Upfront season, we have been sharing our compendium of the latest news and happenings at these critical events. ~ ABC ~

ABC announced the addition of 14 new shows to its established slate of programming at a spangly Upfront presentation at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York, featuring the entire GMA ensemble, the retiring Barbara Walters, Rebel Wilson, Diane Sawyer, Kerry Washington, Joss Whedon, and Jimmy Kimmel. A tie-free Disney CEO Bob Iger watched while ABC/Disney Television Group President Anne Sweeney, (“ABC has never been a traditional company” she said), President of Sales Geri Wang, and Entertainment Group President Paul Lee talked about ABC’s continual innovation, as they unveiled the network’s new series and specials.

  • Lovers find themselves in an impossible situation — on opposite sides of a murder investigation in Betrayal (produced by ABC Studios).
  • Killer Women (produced by ABC Studios) centers on Molly Parker, the only female ranger in an elite squad of Texas lawmen who patrol the violent frontier. 
  • Lucky 7 (produced by ABC Studios and Amblin Television) follows a group of seven New York gas station employees who have been chipping into a lottery pool for months, never thinking they’d actually win.
  • Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films in Joss Whedon’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television).
  • Mind Games (a 20th Century Fox Television production) centers on Clark and Ross, brothers and partners in a unique agency committed to solving clients’ problems using the hard science of psychological manipulation.
  • In Victorian England, the young and beautiful Alice tells a tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (by ABC Studios).
  • The people of Arcadia, Missouri are forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly start to return in Resurrection (by ABC Studios).
  • The Goldbergs (from Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, and produced by Sony Pictures Television) tells the story of 11-year-old Adam, who captures the crazy of his ’80s family via a video camera.
  • Mixology (by ABC Studios) focuses on singles at Union, a high-end bar in Manhattan’s trendy meat-packing district.
  • Super Fun Night (produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Conaco and Warner Bros. Television) centers on three gal pals, (one of whom is played by Rebel Wilson), who have had a standing date, Friday Night Fun Night, for the last 13 years.
  • Reformed party girl Kate (Malin Ackerman) becomes Pete’s third wife, complete with three stepchildren and two ex-wives, in Trophy Wife (from ABC Studios).
  • New reality adventure The Quest takes 12 lucky contestants on the journey of a lifetime when they enter the world of Everealm.
  • Toy Story of Terror, a special from Disney Pixar, is a spooky new tale featuring all the favorite characters from the Toy Story films.


~ CBS ~

The cast of How I Met Your Mother opened CBS’ Upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York with a hilarious rendition of Les Miserables. Then, Neil Patrick Harris introduced network President and CEO Leslie Moonves, noting that “without him TV would be ‘les miserable.'” Moonves proudly announced that CBS was once again #1 in viewers for the tenth time in 11 years. As a result, the network was renewing 20 shows. “That shows you how tough it is to get on our schedule,” said Moonves, adding that the new series making the cut for the 2013-2014 season “are the best of the best.” Here’s a look.

  • We Are Men (from CBS Television Studios) centers on four single guys living in a short-term apartment complex who unexpectedly find camaraderie over their missteps in love.
  • Mom (Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television) stars Anna Faris as a newly sober single mom raising two children in a world full of pitfalls, and Allison Janney as her critical mother.
  • The Millers (from CBS Television Studios) focuses on a newly divorced news reporter looking forward to living the singles’ life until his parents’ marital problems derail his plans.
  • Robin Williams returns to series television in The Crazy Ones (from Twentieth Century Fox Television), a comedy about a larger-than-life advertising genius who works side-by-side with his daughter Sydney (Sarah Michelle Gellar).
  • Suspense drama Hostages (from Jerry Bruckheimer Television in association with Warner Bros. Television) stars Toni Collette as a surgeon who’s thrust into a political conspiracy when her family is taken hostage by rogue FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott).
  • Lost vet Josh Holloway portrays a high-tech intelligence operative enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain in Intelligence (for ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios).
  • Legal drama Reckless (from CBS Television Studios) follows a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a charming Southern attorney, who must hide their mutual attraction when a police sex scandal threatens to tear the city apart.
  • Friends with Better Lives (Twentieth Century Fox Television) is a romantic comedy about six friends at different stages in their lives  married, divorced, newly engaged and single  who secretly question if their pals have it better.


~ The CW Network ~

“We had a terrific season last year, growing our audience on-air, digitally and socially. Now we are building on that success by continuing to add more original programming all year long, and by adding high-concept shows to our schedule that will help us continue our mission of broadening out our 18-to-34-year old audience,” announced Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW, at the network’s Upfront presentation in New York’s City Center. He added that when considering whether a show makes it onto the CW schedule, he runs it through the filter of “Are there 100 episodes here?” Here are the shows that passed the test: 

  • The Originals (from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios), a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, focuses on Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, as he returns the French Quarter of New Orleans, the city his family helped build. 
  • Robbie Amell stars as a young man with abilities he is only beginning to understand that lead him to his first encounter with The Tomorrow People (from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios), a genetically advanced race with the abilities of telekinesis, teleportation and telepathic communication.
  • The sweeping, romantic and racy new historical drama Reign (from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television) stars Adelaide Kane as the young Mary, Queen of Scots.  
  • New drama Star-Crossed (from Ole Productions, Isla de Babel SL and 360 Powwow in association with CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television) centers on Emery and her romance with Roman, an alien.
  • The survival of the human race is entirely in the hands of The 100 (from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios) as they must find a way to transcend their differences, unite and forge a new path on a wildly changed Earth that’s primitive, intense and teeming with the unknown.
  • Reality series Famous in 12 (from Renegade 83 and Harvey Levin Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television and Telepictures) is a social experiment that tracks the lives of one determined family as they move to Los Angeles and seek fame in a 12-week time frame.
  • The CW and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment have announced a multi-year partnership making The CW the exclusive television broadcaster of the two-day, iHeartRadio Music Festival. The CW will also be the exclusive broadcast home of iHeartRadio’s holiday Jingle Ball concert, the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party, and more. The agreement also gives the CW exclusive streaming rights to the television specials on CWTV.com following the broadcasts.The three-year agreement begins with the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party on Monday, July 15 at 8p.


~ Discovery U.S. Hispanic ~

Discovery U.S. Hispanic unveiled its 2013-2014 Upfront slate, yesterday in New York. “Based on our proven success, we are strengthening our programming slate with new series based on our viewers’ well-known passions and preferences, along with returning favorites that support our traditional quality content,” said Ivan Bargueiras, General Manager, Discovery U.S. Hispanic’s networks. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Discovery en Espanol presents a mix of edgy programs from adrenaline stories, like Hombre en la mira (Manhunt), a series that challenges an experienced Special Operations warrior to survive, evade, resist, and escape in a foreign land; to real life dramas like La verdad increible (The Unbelievable Truth), a show that takes viewers across the globe to meet India’s child snake charmers and Britain’s vampire brothers.
  • Un bebe por minuto (One Born Every Minute), from Discovery Familia, takes a look at the drama and emotion of a maternity unit, from the perspective of the parents-to-be and the maternity ward staff.
  • Limpieza obsesiva Limpieza obsesiva (Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners), another entry from Discovery Familia, takes a look at a group of people who wage a constant war on dirt and order.
  • On the beauty front, Discovery Familia presents Coseme, estirame, emparejame! (Stitch me, Lift me, Tuck me), a documentary that exposes life behind the doors of one of the most exclusive cosmetic surgery clinics, Harley Street Skin, revealing the intimate workings of this multi-million dollar business.

~ ESPN ~

ESPN presented its upcoming lineup of series and specials at its Upfront at Best Buy Theater in New York’s Times Square. The lines of buyers and planners waiting to have their pictures taken with the likes of Colin Kaepernick, Mariano Rivera, Victor Cruz, and Landon Donovan snaked around the lobby as soon as the presentation wrapped.

Highlights included the return of the 30 for 30 Film Series that will debut on October 1; a huge new studio, bus and app for SportsCenter; the debut of NFL Insiders-a one-hour weekday series that replaces NFL32, hosted by Suzy Kolber and featuring Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter; the launch of ESPN’s first daily, highlights-driven, soccer studio program in the US (Sundays- Fridays) on Aug. 11; a new daily show ESPNFC that will debut on Aug. 11; as well as a brand new ESPNFC.com and ESPN FC app.

On the sponsorship side, the company also revealed two new ad executions from its first internal Hackathon devoted to Ad Innovation. The initiatives will include GameBreak, a video ad innovation integrated into ESPN’s GameCast and ESPN Alerts, an ad execution that utilizes the 80 million alerts ESPN sends on a monthly basis.

~ ESPN Deportes ~

ESPN Deportes put a major focus on second screen and original programming during its Upfront presentation in New York City.

  • In anticipation of the World Cup, the network will develop a lineup of news and informational programming, as well as original content featuring the most compelling stories behind the world of soccer. They include Destino Brasil, Destino Futbol, Capitales del Futbol and Gringos at the Gate.
  • Dream Job: El Reportero returns for its third installment later this year, as the nationwide casting tour will again give aspiring sportscasters across the nation the opportunity to compete for a chance to serve as a reporter and join the ESPN Deportes staff traveling to Brazil in 2014.
  • ESPN Deportes unveils ESPN Sync, the first Spanish-language web-based app that enhances sports consumption with a unique second-screen experience, accessible across multiple platforms.

~ FOX ~

“We’re making the biggest investment in original programming in our history to ensure that FOX continues to engage viewers and move the culture more than any other entertainment brand,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, yesterday, at the network’s Upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre in New York. While he admitted that last year was not Fox’s best, he trumpeted what he called the “year-round original programming” that will makes up FOX’s primetime slate for the 2013-2014 television season.

  • Jack is back! Kiefer Sutherland returns as Jack Bauer in the compressed, 12-hour event series 24: Live Another Day. The show retains its original real-time format with 12 episodes representing 24 hours and is set to debut in the summer of 2014.
  • Dads (from 20th Century Fox Television and Fuzzy Door Productions) stars Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi as successful gaming entrepreneurs and childhood best friends whose lives get turned upside down when their fathers move in.
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (produced by Universal Television) focuses on a hotshot detective (former SNL’er Andy Samberg), who gets a new Captain (Andre Braugher) with a lot to prove.
  • Enlisted (from 20th Century Fox Television) is an irreverent but heartfelt comedy about three brothers on a small Florida Army base and the group of misfits who surround them.
  • An action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, Almost Human (from Warner Bros. Television, Bad Robot Productions and Bonanza Productions Inc.) focuses on a time when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids.
  • Sleepy Hollow (from 20th Century Fox Television and K/O Paper Products) is modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic, Ichabod Crane.
  • Kids take over the kitchen in Junior MasterChef [wt] (from Shine America and One Potato Two Potato), a culinary competition series for kids between the ages of eight and 13 who love to cook.
  • Gang Related (from 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Entertainment, Chris Morgan Productions and Skeeter Rosenbaum Productions) is a gritty action-drama centered on  Detective Ryan Lopez, a former gang member turned rising star in Los Angeles’ elite Gang Task Force.
  • Rake (Sony Pictures Television, Fedora Entertainment and Essential Media & Entertainment Pty Ltd.) follows the comedic and chaotic life of criminal defense lawyer Keegan Deane.
  • Animated comedy series Murder Police (from 20th Century Fox Television and Bento Box Animation) followsa dedicated, but inept detective and his colleagues in a twisted city precinct.
  • Surviving Jack (from Warner Bros. Television, Doozer) is an ensemble series is about a man becoming a dad, as his son is becoming a man.
  • Us & Them (from Sony Pictures Television and BBC Worldwide Productions) focuses on a pair of young lovers whose path to happily-ever-after is complicated by the screwed-up people closest to them.
  • Wayward Pines (from FX Productions)  is an intense, mind-bending thriller starring Matt Dillon as a Secret Service agent unraveling a mystery in an Idaho town  in which nothing is what it seems. The show is set to premiere in 2014.

~ Mundo Fox ~

“Next broadcast year, MundoFox brings viewers more. We have supercharged the network with an expanded number of original programs that are universally relevant, bring up the Mexican flavor, and put on the network some of the biggest and most beloved talent names,” said Emiliano Saccone, President of MundoFox. The network unveiled its 2013-2014 programming schedule during the Fox Hispanic Media Upfront presentation in Manhattan’s Alice Tully Hall.

  • The anticipated El Capo 3. Filmed on location in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico, Colombia and Europe, El Capo returns with his most ambitious mission yet – to end the worldwide drug empire that he helped create.
  • From the man who created Betty La Fea (Ugly Betty), Fernando Gaitan, comes the remake of the first international hit that put Colombian television on the map: Cafe con Aroma de Mujer.
  • Two programming events produced out of Mexico with Amor con Angel (produced by Sony), a feel-good romantic comedy bringing beloved icon Cantinflas to the small screen, and El Capitan (from FoxTelecolombia), an adventure series that tells the story of Mexican-born Carlos Camacho Espiritu and stars Mexican actor Humberto Zurita.
  • A robust weekend slate with new shows includes FX’s The Bridge with Oscar-nominated actor Demian Bichir; boxing docu-drama The Golden Boys by executive producers Mario Lopez and Oscar de la Hoya; the return of superstar Barbara Mori to television with Luna; and an all original comedy Familia en Venta, with Roselyn Sanchez and Carlos Espejel.
  • In El Factor X, the original Spanish-language version of the worldwide phenomenon The X Factor, U.S. Hispanic viewers will help choose the next young Latino superstar or breakout music group.
  • The network also announced an exclusive agreement with popular Mexican TV personality and host of Minuto Para Ganar, Marco Antonio Regil as MundoFox’s new exclusive screen ambassador.

~ NBC ~

NBC took over the stage at Radio City Music Hall to announce its new lineup of primetime shows for the 2013-14 season, which its execs say will be a winning combination of returning series, new comedies and dramas, and the latest season of The Voice, the top reality program on television. First, Parks & Recreation’s Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson (Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman) assessed last year’s season and offered some terrifying new programming ideas. Here’s a look at what’s actually coming up on NBC.

  • About a Boy (from Universal Television, Working Title Television, True Jack Productions and Tribeca Productions) centers on a man-child whose carefree world is disrupted when a needy single mom and her 11-year-old son move in next door.
  • The Family Guide (from Universal Television and Aggregate Films) focuses on the Fishers, a clan brought closer together by divorce.
  • The Michael J. Fox Show (from Sony Pictures Television and Olive Bridge Entertainment) centers on Mike Henry, a news anchor who decides to return to work, five years after putting his career on hold to spend more time with his family and focus on his battle with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Sean P. Hayes stars as a divorced gay dad who juggles a career, his pushy mom and weekends with his teenage daughter in Sean Saves the World (from Universal Television and Hazy Mills Productions).
  • Undateable (from Warner Bros. Television and Doozer Productions) centers on a confident slacker, who teaches his roommate and romantically challenged friends all about the game of love.
  • The families of a pregnant teenage girl and her boyfriend collide, when they learn they’re expecting and decide to wed on Welcome to the Family (from Sony Pictures Television and FanFare Productions).
  • Believe (from Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions) tells the story of an orphaned girl with special powers and her quest to stay one step ahead of the sinister forces after it.
  • James Spader stars in The Blacklist (from Sony Pictures Television and Davis Entertainment) as a former FBI’s Most Wanted fugitive, who surrenders to help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist.
  • Chicago PD (from Universal Television and Wolf Films) centers on the uniformed cops who patrol the beat and the intelligence unit of District 21 of the Chicago Police Department.
  • Students of Ballard High School, a place that educates the children of Washington, D.C.’s elite, are taken hostage by a vengeful mastermind in Crisis (from 20th Century Fox Television).
  • Crossbones (from Universal Television, Parkes/MacDonald Productions and Georgeville Television) centers on diabolical pirate Blackbeard as he reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors.
  • Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars in Dracula (from Flame Ventures, Sky Living, Playground Entertainment, Universal Television, NBCUniversal International Television Production and Carnival Film & Television), a provocative new drama about one of the world’s most iconic characters.
  • Blair Underwood stars in Ironside (from Universal Television, Davis Entertainment and Yellow Brick Road Productions), a retread of the Raymond Burr series, as a detective refused to be defined by the wheelchair that confines him.
  • The Night Shift (from Sony Pictures Television) focuses on the special breed of men and women who work at San Antonio Memorial into the wee hours of the night.
  • New alternative series include: The Million Second Quiz (from All3 Media America, Studio Lambert and Universal Television), a live competition that spans 12 consecutive days and nights; Food Fighters  (from Universal Television and Electus), an ultimate culinary clash that’s one part cooking competition, one part game show; and American Dream Builders (from Universal Television), which features America’s top designers, builders, architects and landscapers putting their talents to the test on extreme home renovations.

~ NUVOtv ~

NUVOtv held its upfront event at the Edison Ballroom in New York, announcing a lineup that kicks off on July 18. The network’s newly appointed Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lopez took the stage and announced, “Latinos are a force in this country. We have huge economic power and unprecedented political and cultural influence. It’s time for television to reflect who the modern Latino actually is.” Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

  • The Jennifer Lopez Biography Special [wt] (from Nuyorican Productions) offers intimate access into the personal life and career of the inspiring artist.
  • Gotta Dance takes a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of professional back-up dancers on Lopez’s world tour.
  • Rodney’s Joy is a docu-series featuring Grammy award-winning producer, Rodney “Dark Child” Jerkins and his wife Joy Enriquez, a former Mexican American pop star who put her promising career on hold to raise a family.
  • Set in the Latin style mecca of Miami, Oribe showcases the life and times of controversial Cuban-American celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales.
  • Stand Up and Deliver showcases top Latino comics.
  • Mario Lopez: One-on-One is a Hollywood insider interview format show featuring a broad array of influential Latino superstars.

~ TELEMUNDO ~

“We are the Hispanic Hollywood” was the theme of the Telemundo Media Upfront at New York’s Museum of Arts & Design, according to President Emilio Romano, COO Jacqueline Hernandez, and EVP of Ad Sales & Integrated Marketing Mike Rosen. “Our reach is identical to our competitor, Univision, but their ratings are higher,” said Rosen. “So we’re getting advertisers to challenge conventional wisdom,as we transform from a ‘paid’ culture to ‘paid, owned, earned and shared.'” Here’s some of what Telemundo has in store.

New telenovelas

  • Dama y Obrero focuses on the complicated lovers’ triangle of Ignacia, Tomas and Pedro. 
  • La Impostora follows the adventures of Blanca Guerrero, an aspiring actress hired to pose as millionaire investor Victoria San Marino and infiltrate the powerful Altamira family.
  • Reina de Corazones tells the story of a woman who has forgotten the last five years of her life and tries to put the pieces of the puzzle back together.
  • Camelia la Tejana centers on a young, innocent and beautiful woman trying to escape from one of Mexico’s most powerful drug lords, Don Antonio.
  • Santa Diabla [wt] focuses on a dramatic twist of fate that leads Santa Martinez to live the worst of nightmares – the loss of her husband, following an obsessed woman’s terrible plot to destroy him.
  • Two new shows join the daytime lineup. Suelta la Sopa, a daily celebrity-driven gossip series featuring the top stories from the world of entertainment and exclusive scoops scored by teams of paparazzi around the U.S. and Mexico. Entre Grandes Y Chicos is a new game show where adults compete against kids in role-reversal games to see what it’s like from each other’s perspectives.
  • Superstar Showdown [wt], a variety-competition show produced in association with Ryan Seacrest Productions, features well-known music icons facing off in four rounds of music-based games and sing-offs.
  • Original reality series premiering on mun2 include: Viva Los Vargas, which follows the life and journey of world boxing champion Fernando Vargas and his family; Reinas de Reality, which centers on friends and real estate partners Jackie Mateos and Liz Perez; and Horoscopos, which follows sisters Vicky and Marisol Terrazas, the lead singers of leading regional Mexican group Horoscopos de Durango.
  • On the music front, mun2 has renewed Reventon, Tiro Con La Bronca and mun2POP!


~  Turner Broadcasting ~

TNT and TBS unveiled an extensive slate of series being developed with household names such as Steven Spielberg, Steve Carell and Diablo Cody, at its Upfront at the Hammerstein Ballroom. “Our industry has reached a tipping point,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “Today, we’re looking toward the next horizon – becoming a multiscreen video company serving multiple audiences.”

TBS and TNT are streaming on-air content live across multiple platforms 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the networks’ websites and a pair of newly created Watch TNT and Watch TBS apps.

Scripted Series

TNT announced Guilt by Association, based on the debut novel by Marcia Clark, lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial, which centers on gutsy Deputy District Attorney Rachel Knight; Lew Archer (from Warner Horizon Television), from The Closer creator James Duff and Close to Home creator Jim Leonard, follows the sleuth many consider to be “the original P.I.”; and Crushed (from Prospect Park and NBC Universal), a primetime soap focusing on rich lovers Caz and Daphne.

Scripted series development for TBS includes Tribeca [wt] (from Carousel Television), a comedy from Steve and Nancy Carell about Angie Tribeca, a 10-year veteran of LAPD’s elite RHCU (Really Heinous Crimes Unit) and Dad, Stop Embarrassing Me (from Foxx/King Entertainment), inspired by Jamie Foxx’s relationship with his 18-year-old daughter.

Unscripted Series

TNT presented Burn (from Apostle Pictures, Inc. and Callbox),a docudrama told through the eyes of Detroit firefighters; and The Big Deal (from Shine America), a competition series that follows teams of antique and collectible enthusiasts from across the country participating in an epic scavenger hunt for the chance to win thousands in cash.

Unscripted Development at TBS includes Me Time with Diablo Cody (from 51 Minds), tailored around Cody’s unique perspective on all things pop culture. The show reveals a side of Hollywood and celebs that the public very rarely gets to see; and Cheeseheads [wt] (from Good Clean Fun), which explores loud and proud Green Bay Packers fans.

Turner’s Adult Swim announced its 2013-14 programming schedule, a mixed slate of more than 30 new and returning series, pilots and specials. “As Adult Swim continues to grow and be the place for great comedic talent as well as surprising and unexpected content, it is important that we expand its development of original programs so that we can build on its success even more,” said Stuart Snyder, president/coo of Turner’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media Group. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

New animated series include: Rick and Morty, about the adventures shared between a genius grandfather and his less than genius grandson; Mr. Pickles, about the Goodman clan and their deviant border collie; Mike Tyson Mysteries, about Mighty Mike and his talking pigeon sidekick; and King Star King, about a punk rock he-man who falls from the realm of the gods to land as a fry cook in a waffle joint.

New series Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell is a workplace comedy about Gary, an associate demon, who attempts to capture souls on earth to climb the corporate ladder of the underworld.

Premiering in October, Hot Package is a fictional Canadian entertainment news program in the vein of Entertainment Tonight and EXTRA.

Pilots include a mix of live-action and animation, including Hole to Hole, which follows the exploits of sexy billionaire detectives Ashleigh and Amelia Dangerhole in a parody of ’80s detective shows, and Ubermansion, from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and the creators of Robot Chicken, about the mundane humanity of six superheroes all living in the same mansion.

~ UNIVISION ~

Univision Communications Inc. unveiled more than 30 new shows and an emphasis on more targeted, multimedia programming.

  • Four new telenovelas include: La Tempestad (The Storm), about Marina who finds work and love in a small fishing village; Mentir para Vivir (Lie So You Can Live), about Oriana who flees to a Mexican resort hotel and takes on a false identity to protect her daughter; Libre Para Amarte (Free to Love), about Aurora who supports her family by taking over a famous taxi stand in Mexico City; and La Mujer del Vendaval (The Woman from Vendaval) about Marcela who is about to receive a large inheritance on the condition that she marry.
  • Three new comedies include: Durmiendo con mi Jefe (Sleeping with my Boss), a modern Mexican twist on the classic sitcom The Odd Couple; Todo Incluido (All-Inclusive), which  showcases the popular alter egos of comedian Adrian Uribe; and Casate Conmigo (Marry Me) about a woman who flees the altar for the third time.
  • Reality series include: Va Por Ti, which searches for the next music superstar; Mira Quien Baila! 4 (Look Who’s Dancing! 4), the reality dance competition returning for a fourth season; Nuestra Belleza Latina 8 (Our Latin Beauty 8), the reality/drama/talent contest/beauty pageant returning for an eighth season; and Parodiando 3 (Parody 3), a  comedy featuring contestants competing as all-time favorite celebrities.

In a joint venture, Univision News and Participant Media have come together to produce and market a series of ten documentaries drawn from the headlines and produced in both Spanish and English.

Unimas presents eight new drama series, including Metastasis, based on Breaking Bad, which tells the story of a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer; and La Viuda Negra (The Black Widow), based on the true story of Griselda Blanco, “The Cocaine Godmother,” who ruled the Miami drug trade in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Galavision has three new entries: #Hoy Soy Nadie (#Today I’m Nobody), set in the real world and the murky world of cyberspace; Mistico e Inexplicable (Mystical and Unexplainable), a show that explores the paranormal; and Mexico, a series of hour-long documentaries dedicated to the experience of Mexico through its history, culture, sports and people.

Univision Deportes offers an action-packed summer with 90 Dias de Delirio (90 Days of Madness), featuring the most exciting soccer matches and tournaments from around the globe.

~USA~

USA unveiled its development slate for the 2013-2014 season, a mix of dramas and the network’s first-ever original half hour comedies, at its Upfront presentation at Pier 36 in New York. “With Modern Family joining our line-up in the fall, we can leverage television’s most popular comedy to serve as a powerful launch pad for new originals in this genre,” said Chris McCumber, Co-President of USA Network. “Our new series come from some of the best comedic talent in the business, and reflect USA’s style  great characters, strong execution and compelling storytelling,” added Jeff Wachtel, Co-President of USA Network. Here’s a look:

  • Sirens (from Apostle and Fox Television Studios in conjunction with Daybreak Pictures) follows three Chicago EMTs whose sometimes silly, self-righteous personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships. However, they’re uniquely qualified for saving anyone who winds up in their ambulance.
  • Playing House (from Universal Cable Productions and American Work) centers on two best friends, a mom-to-be and a single career woman, who come back together when they need each other most. 
  • The pilot Love Is Dead (from Universal Cable Productions and Gaumont International Television) focuses on a unique company that specializes in breaking-up romantic relationships on behalf of those who are willing to pay to not be around when it happens.
  • Horizon (from Universal Cable Productions) is a period genre drama set at the height of World War II. The pilot will go into production this summer.
  • The Edge (from Universal Cable Productions and Executive Producer John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co.) is a thriller that explores one idealistic man’s journey after he leaves an NGO to join the world’s top venture capital firm.
  • The story of an ER doctor whose life changes after he is involved in a gang shooting is explored in Complications (from Fox TV Studios).
  • After an unconventional act of heroism gives a young FBI agent the opportunity to choose her next assignment, she chooses the bank crimes division in Los Angeles in Bank (from Universal Cable Productions).
  • Blanco County (from Tom Welling Productions and Rob Thomas Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television) follows the story of a worldly pro baseball player who would rather spend his down time traveling the world than return to his small Texas hometown.
  • Don’t Turn Around (from Grady Girl Productions) is a limited series about a young group of staffers who work on an island and get trapped at the end of the season.
  • Hungry (from Universal Cable Productions) takes an inside look at the opening of a New York City hot spot, inspired by restaurateur Joe Bastianich’s life and his New York Times bestseller Restaurant Man. 
  • Legal thriller Shadow Counsel (from Universal Cable Productions) centers on Ethan, a former Army JAG attorney now working as a criminal lawyer in NY who is recruited by the FBI to crack an ongoing investigation.
