Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 9, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

BrainPop, the producer of animated educational content for grades K-8, launches a new Spanish language site, BrainPop en Espanol this week. This new Spanish-language site uses the BrainPop’s format to present content focused on Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Health and Technology.  Both BrainPop and BrainPop en Espanol are available in the US as well as in South America and Spain.  The company is currently working to create localized BrainPop content around the world.  (http://www.brainpopes.com/)

Sony Pictures Animation’s first CG-animated movie Open Season, will be released simultaneously in Imax 3D and in conventional theatres on September 29, 2006.  Open Season stars the vocal talents of Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher, Debra Messing and Gary Sinise and is directed by Roger Allers, Jill Culton, and Anthony Stacchi.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Buffalo Dreams will make its Canadian TV premiere on Family Channel, Friday, April 14, at 7:30p.  Buffalo Dreams, a Disney Channel original movie, follows the story of the culture clash and compromise between two teen boys, one a rebellious Navajo and the other who has just moved to the area from Chicago.

Cartoon Network will pay tribute to Japan’s Hayao Miyazaki by featuring four of the animation director’s movies on the network’s Saturday night action block, Toonami.  The features will air on consecutive Saturday nights starting March 18 at 7:30p.  First up will be Spirited Away where a girl must fend off a world of spirits, monsters and witches to break the spell that has turned her parents into pigs.  The three other titles are Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Sesame Workshop will release Beginning Together and Make Music Together, DVD titles that are part of its Sesame Beginnings line, on April 4, 2006.  The Sesame Beginnings series is designed to help parents and caregivers encourage their child’s curiosity and learning through daily interactions.  The DVDs feature baby versions of the Sesame Street Muppets.  Additionally, the DVDs come with printed guides that provide additional tips on ways to extend learning after watching the DVDs. Created by Sesame Workshop the DVDs are distributed by Sony Wonder.

Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. and AK Comics, a Middle East-based comic book publisher, have inked a distribution deal that will see the launch of AK Comics’ superhero comic book titles in the US.  The first AK Comics titles will be available at retail from May 2006.

Fox Home Entertainment will release the new Bratz DVD movie Bratz Genie Magic on April 11, 2006.  On the same day the Bratz CD with the same title will be released by Hip-O/UMe.  The album includes five songs featured in the DVD in addition to songs from the Bratz TV series, which airs on 4Kids TV on Fox. All of the songs on Genie Magic were written/produced by Matthew Gerrard, who also wrote the song Start Of Something New from Disney Channel’s movie High School Musical.

Walt Disney Records releases That’s So Raven Too! this week, the second soundtrack inspired by Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven series.  Seven of the 15 songs on the release were co-written by the series star Raven-Symone, and she sings on a number of those including some with co-stars Anneliese van der Pol and with Orlando Brown.  In addition the release features songs from Jesse McCartney and B5 and sister groups Everlife and Aly & AJ.

As part of an effort to grow its domestic theatrical distribution division MGM has entered into an agreement with Palisades Media Group.  Under the deal Palisades will oversee all of MGM’s media buying and planning. 

Western New York Public Broadcasting Association (WNED) and Educate Inc. have entered into an agreement to keep the PBS Kids series Reading Rainbow in production.  Under the deal, Educate Inc. will now serve as a co-producer of new episodes of the series along with WNED, who co-founded the series and is an original series co-producer.  This agreement follows the University of Nebraska Board of Regents sale of the Nebraska ETV Network’s production interest in the series to WNED.  In addition, Educate has also acquired Great Plains National Instructional Library (GPN), a non-profit educators’ source for classroom-use video/interactive media learning packages, from the University.  Educate, Inc. delivers educational services to kids in grades pre-K-12 via its brands including Sylvan Learning Centers, Hooked on Phonics and Catapult Learning.

KOCCA, Korea Culture & Content Agency, has established KOCCA Animation Studio, a full-service, state-of-the-art 2D/3D animation studio designed to directly support ever-growing Korean animation production industry.  A non-profit studio KOCCA will select projects to be produced and marketed there.  Two shows, out of the first 41 applicants, have already been selected and production will begin during the first half of 2006.  Moving forward an additional ten animated projects are expected to be produced with additional funding throughout the year.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Flashlight Readers, Scholastic’s book club for grades 3-8 (www.scholastic.com/flashlight), has launched a virtual extension of Hoot by Carl Hiaasen as its newest book club installment.  On the site readers will find information about the story and author as well as get a first look at a slide show from the movie and participate in Hoot related interactive activities along with exclusive club member content including bulletin boards, flashboards, and excerpts of Hiaasen’s new book Flush.  The author will take part in an online chat on April 18, 1-2p, and again that evening 7-8p.  Building on the theme of Hoot the website also features a letter writing activity that helps kids through the process of writing a letter about an issue of their choice to a politician or company.  Hoot will open wide April 21, 2006.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MGM has named several new members of the senior management team for its Domestic Theatrical Distribution division.  Rick Sands has been appointed COO overseeing the division.  Sands was most recently President/COO, DreamWorks SKG.  Also joining the company is Clark Woods who will serve as President/Domestic Theatrical Distribution, supervising all aspects of theatrical distribution.  Woods is a 25-yr veteran of Paramount Pictures where he led distribution efforts for movies including Titanic, Forest Gump, and Raider’s of the Lost Ark among others.

Keri Putnam has been named President/Production, Miramax Films.  Putnam will oversee the day-to-day development and production of the studio’s annual slate of films and will report to Daniel Battsek, President.  Putnam joins Miramax Films from HBO, where she was EVP/Development and Production HBO Films.

Dargaud Distribution has restructured its sales team and has made several new appointments and promotions.  Leon Perahia has been promoted to President and Véronique Chalandar joins the company as Deputy GM.

  • Chalandar will oversee a team that includes Michele Massonnat, who continues as Director/Sales and Acquisitions, for English speaking countries, Scandinavia, Italy and Australia.
  • Jerome Alby has been named Sales Executive, for Eastern Europe, Mediterranean countries and Middle East.  Previously Alby led development at Citel’s youth DVD division.
  • Also joining the company is Renelde Castille who will be responsible for Sales and Merchandising for Belgium (French and Deutsch speaking), Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

As Educate, Inc. moves into the world of educational broadcast media, as co-producer of Reading Rainbow, the company has appointed Jinny Goldstein as VP/Education and Strategy and Dan Hamby as GM/GPN.  Goldstein will lead Educate Inc.’s partnership with WNED-TV and PBS.  She was previously VP/Education, PBS.  He will work closely with national producers and independent filmmakers to bring their programming to consumers and educators.  Prior to this Hamby severed as VP/Consumer Products, PBS.
